Weird Video, but lots of videos were like this. This is at the beginning of the MTV Age, or as I call the 3rd British Invasion. When MTV first started off, the station brought in tons of British music via video. England at the time was the only major game in town producing music videos. Eventually, American bands began making music videos beyond live concert clips, but making videos were expensive and MTV hasn't proven themselves as a reliable moneymaker, especially when record sales were down. So, record companies produced CHEAP and experimental videos to get on the MTV market. What you are witnessing is the American counter-attack to the deluge of Britsh music. From 1980 - 1983 MTV would show some of the weirdest, cheapest music videos ever. Yea,that was the basic concept for the entire "Speaking In Tongues" album. They illustrated this on the tour by having screens set up behind the band during "Making Flippy Floppy" and having 3 words appear on 3 different screens. Some kinda matched up,others not as much. Very few bands pushed as hard to recreate themselves from record to record and always strive for something totally original as much as Talking Heads did. One of my absolute favorite bands ever.
As many here have suggested, their concert movie "Stop Making Sense" is a must watch, with the volume way up. The free version on TH-cam is about 4 min 9 sec short of the full runtime of 1:28:06, even tho' it says "Full Concert." Which means it's been sped up a little bit, which would seem to be the case from the sound of David Byrnes voice in the opening. Tina Weymouth on bass is simply superb. There is no doubt you would love the entire concert. Their performances of every song in that movie are definitely the best they have.

This is one of the first videos i can remember from being a kid. I can remember coming home from 1st grade in 83 and my grandma going youll never guess what we got. She sat me in front of the tv and turned on MTV! This is one of the ones I remember fondly from that time, one of my favorites.
I forgot this song, then one night I was watching the last episode of Preacher showing him disappearing down the road, then the road to nowhere came on, it was a classic finish with that song.
"Slippery People" is my favorite track by the Talking Heads. The live version is so much fun and worth watching. The Staple Singers do a good cover of it as well.
Speaking in Tongues in my opinion is the pinnacle of the Heads. Moon Rocks is an excellent tune you are 100% correct and an absolute under played jewel on this album. Kudos for showing it some love.

Their live concert “Stop Making Sense” is one of the all-time greatest concerts ever recorded. It’s even directed by academy award winning director Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs). The live version of the songs (to me) are preferred to the original recordings, especially since they are mastered.
Need to check out "Stay Up Late" the production part in the end is really cool. I am a retired stage-hand, so I find it impressive and very cool that they included it as part of the video.

What Jamel is saying is that he recognizes the song because he heard it in an episode of "The Walking Dead." Like, at the end of Season One (Episode 6) the show concludes with Bob Dylan's masterpiece, "Tomorrow is a Long Time," and many people became familiar with that song because of "The Walking Dead."

So glad this band made it past the big record company hurdle back in the day. Music that's not so much timeless, but time defying. Doesn't fit into a genre or era - always unique.
Remember record stores? I used to work in one. Byrne pulls up on a bike one day, parks it. He walks in the store, and I'm by myself. He asks me "where's the wax?" I said "it's over there, it's over there. My building has every convenience." He smiled at me and nothing more was said. He bought Krautrock.

All their tracks are amazing, and they all sound and look better in the live “Stop Making Sense” version. There’s so much more energy and more band members to add layers and funk. Please check it out. You will love it.

Life During Wartime is the logical progression, but, if you want to see a lighter side, try And She Was
I'd argue that Life During Wartime is a much lighter song than And She Was, but both are great.

This Must Be the Place aka The Naive Melody is my all-time favorite song. I have listened to it for at least 2 decades at least once a week and have never grown tired of it.

There is a concert movie from talking heads called “stop making sense” greatest music movie ever and worth a look at how their concerts work. They build the set as they go from song to song!
This is one of the first videos i can remember from being a kid. I can remember coming home from 1st grade in 83 and my grandma going youll never guess what we got. She sat me in front of the tv and turned on MTV! This is one of the ones I remember fondly from that time, one of my favorites.

I forgot this song, then one night I was watching the last episode of Preacher showing him disappearing down the road, then the road to nowhere came on, it was a classic finish with that song.

These guys ( and gal ) made it hip to be a geek. And they made some excellent, iconic music. It's hard not to love these guys (and gal ).
Try "Girlfriend Is Better," "Crosseyed and Painless," "Life During Wartime," and, a personal favorite, the underrated "Moon Rocks."
Speaking in Tongues in my opinion is the pinnacle of the Heads. Moon Rocks is an excellent tune you are 100% correct and an absolute under played jewel on this album. Kudos for showing it some love.

Their live concert “Stop Making Sense” is one of the all-time greatest concerts ever recorded. It’s even directed by academy award winning director Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs). The live version of the songs (to me) are preferred to the original recordings, especially since they are mastered.

They wrote this song after going to a Parliament Funkadelic concert and it shows. Tina Weymouth's Bass work is EPIC!
Need to check out "Stay Up Late" the production part in the end is really cool. I am a retired stage-hand, so I find it impressive and very cool that they included it as part of the video.

dude this is more than 30 years pre-Walking Dead.
What Jamel is saying is that he recognizes the song because he heard it in an episode of "The Walking Dead." Like, at the end of Season One (Episode 6) the show concludes with Bob Dylan's masterpiece, "Tomorrow is a Long Time," and many people became familiar with that song because of "The Walking Dead."
It was just in the season finale last week.

In 1983 my friends wanted to take me sailing for my 21st birthday but I said no because I had tickets to see The Talking Heads, which I had seen twice before but each time was a different experience. They are phenomenal!

Frantz and Weymouth recalled where the titular phrase came from, as well as its influence on the music. “The music’s inspiration began when Tina and I went to Madison Square Garden in February 1979 to see Parliament, Funkadelic, Bootsy Collins and the Brides of Funkenstein,” Frantz told the Journal. “As the Talking Heads’ bassist and drummer, Tina and I were responsible for the band’s groove. We loved all kinds of music, especially funk. Before Parliament came on that night, the audience chanted things like, ‘Goddamn, get off your ass and jam’ and ‘Burn down the house! Burn down the house!’ That last one stuck with me.”

Oh ya, Jamel, I absolutely knew “Burning Down The House” was before “The Roof Us On Fire”. I was in my mid teens when they both hit the airwaves & Mtv. Watching the live shows back then, you absolutely noticed the funk influence on Talking Heads. As soon as the music vid started, and in spite of my headache, I started moving in my chair. 😎

So glad this band made it past the big record company hurdle back in the day. Music that's not so much timeless, but time defying. Doesn't fit into a genre or era - always unique.
Remember record stores? I used to work in one. Byrne pulls up on a bike one day, parks it. He walks in the store, and I'm by myself. He asks me "where's the wax?" I said "it's over there, it's over there. My building has every convenience." He smiled at me and nothing more was said. He bought Krautrock.
You should check out some live performances of the Talking Heads. They have a live movie Stop Making Sense. But there are lots of great performances out there.
