- When you get a new horse you there's a few things you need to do on the ground before you get on to make sure you horse is safe. Today we are going to show you through all the ground work we do to prepare our horses for riding!
Mowgley has already put on a lot of muscle from the walker, being hand walked with controlled walking exercises and a few lunges in between.
Lunging is important also for our thoroughbred Mowgley to understand how the bit works, the bridle works AND how the connection from the back to the front works. We do all before we get on him, so it's safer for the rider and a happier experience for our horse!

Thank you so much for promoting helmets during groundwork! An 11 year old girl at my barn recently had to have her ear reattached due to being kicked in the head while lunging. And my worst ever fall happened while walking to our arena (very scared of snakes!), reared, flipped and pinned me. Thank god I had a helmet on because it got cracked in half. The worst injuries happen when we least expect them!
So sorry to hear about your injury and the girl at your barn but good reminder from you about safety!
Oh my goodness.... what a bizarre circumstance. I'm so sorry that happened to you but very glad you're OK. Also so glad you had your helmet on. 👍 That is a really scary story & a good lesson for everyone reading this. I don't blame horses for their primal fear of snakes, I don't care for them either.
Omg i really can’t say enough times how much these videos are helpful. Well said Alexandra! Alicia is very thoughtful as to her horses' needs & their comfort. The wheels are very slowly starting to turn towards a more horse centric training/ feeding approach!!!

This is a super head exploding video for me. I tried, many years ago, to teach my green but older Quarter horse to lunge but I had little idea about how to do it, or what the goal was, or even why lunging was useful. We never figured it out. I wish I had had these videos then, my really good horse could have been great! I am definitely saving this video so I can find it later. Thanks for your hard work and breaking everything down so well so I understand.

👏👏 for lunging with a helmet on! I was looking at an OTTB this past weekend loose in the roundpen and she kicked me in the thighs. First time being kicked in 15+ years of being with horses. So grateful it was there and not elsewhere. Never gonna do that again without a helmet.

I just wanted to come back to this once again and say thank you. I have a Standardbred. The “poor mans” horse here in New Zealand. He’s raced for 5 years as a pacer in both NZ and Aus. Luckily for me he worked as a galloping pacemaker after he came back to NZ so also knows how to canter and gallop. But I had real trouble getting it out of him.
Following the strategies you spoke about in this video, in our first session he made a really noticeable change towards his canter strike offs. At one point he even appeared to look at his inside hind and stamp it down as if to tell himself “like THIS”. And every session thereafter he’s put in a really obvious effort to getting his strike offs on the correct lead and not fumbling or bouncing his legs. He can’t maintain it for more than a few strides yet, but that’s ok. It’s all progress.

We are getting two (gentled) mustangs that I'm going to start doing dressage with. I don't expect them to be as green as Mowgli, but this series is soo helpful with how to start them in dressage. I don't expect to show them, but just to get them to use their bodies correctly and be balanced to have a "career" being pleasure riding horses. Thank you so much!

Video had some gems of advice. Agree that you should really wear gloves when lungeing.
A tip for viewers out there. If your off the track racehorse is a Standardbred, lots of them are terrified of whips and have to be shown that whips can be used for signalling and isn't just there for hitting them. So you would need to do that before trying lungeing.

Fantastic and what a fun horse. I always used to use the lunge line like you have it, I found it kept the horse better under control and always with a inside bend and later on when I rode them they understood bending. Also helps the rider when starting big gangly horses. I am long past my riding years, but you are making me want to ride again!

I tried this with my OTTB here in AuS, and Honestly it just all made sense. Alicia was so positive and reassured me it was okay that he picked up the wrong lead and his stiff side was okay when he stopped and turned. This is brilliant stuff and hearing it with an aussie accent and knowing how things work over here 😀

his baseline movement is quite good! It is exciting to see---because imagine how much it will improve once he has built up fitness/balance/topline! OTTBs have SUCH good work ethic and learn SO fast, though their process is usually not linear those moments are impressive to witness.

I'd love to see a world where nobody used bits anymore. Seeing so many people succeeding with bitless bridles and actually reporting that their horse is just as responsive and more relaxed makes it a no brainer for me.

I’m loving all the videos. You are packing in so much information into them. I’ve only ever attempted to lunge my boy twice and discovered he doesn’t understand it and just wanted to be beside me as he was confused and takes comfort from being near. (Also I don’t really know what I’m doing) seeing you do the transitions and having structure to your session (as supposed to just walking, trotting, cantering circles - which is all I’ve ever seen anyone do before) makes me feel I want to get a coach out to teach both me and Pedro to lunge as I think it would be really useful, especially over winter when lack of light and low temps make me less enthusiastic about riding! 🤣

I'm going to start using my girth from now on, great tips on keeping safe too Mine is very reactive to my lunge whip as in scared so I use my dressage whip instead. I'm going try the clipping to the lunge roller from now on too. Loving this series We all appreciate your time you put in to help all of us with our TB and maybe one of us takes one of ours to the Olympics that you helped training and get amongst the Warmbloods.

I love this video so much. I wish though Alicia would promote the horse having to face the rider to send them out rather than her backing up. I wish the horse did more foot work at the beginning then Alicia. Still an amazing video and I wish I had this 5 years ago.

Walking on the lunge before you send them out trotting will help train them to relax and walk at the end too. :) Same concept. Walk, halt, walk, halt. Change direction often. Thoroughbreds love to just move their feet so it would be too simple to just let them trot straight away. I like to walk for a few minutes before moving up the gaits - just as I do when I'm on them. Repetition helps.
Thanks Amy, Mowgley goes on the walker and also walks at start and end, especially at the end where Alicia points out that he needs to walk until he is not breathing so hard.

I have a horse that rushes in on the lunge and I just try to gather up the lunge line as she does it and stop her from running me over. She has little to no ‘respect‘ of the whip and will just run run into it. I’ve been taping her on the shoulder as she starts to turn, which sometimes works if I get it at the right time, but then she speeds up and goes A LOT faster. Would love some tips, I’m really enjoying your OTT series and can’t wait for more 😁😁

I am no where's near a professional, I've only trained one horse and he was a weanling and I learned how to train him from TH-cam videos, but to give him a good clear 'walk' cue I had to start off by hunching my shoulders slightly and bending at the waist just a tiny bit to bring my energy down while saying 'walk' long and drawn out. It was a good visual cue for him and eventually I didn't have to bend at the waist anymore and then eventually all I had to do was lower my chin to my chest slightly. Now I only have to say 'walk' and he walks fine but he is a Quarter Horse and not super energetic like a thoroughbred. I did find the visual cue helped him calm and slow down almost immediately so I wonder if this guy would pick it up as easily? 🤔 love these videos and I really wish I had these when I was trying to train my guy 7 years ago!
The horses do pick up on rider body language for sure, Alicia does not highlight it in this video but she does use her body language to help the horse understand what is expected like a shorter sharper noise to go faster and a longer stead noise to bring him back and the direction her body is facing 🦄
This is very different from the ‘natural horsemanship’ method of ‘round yard’ work & from their ‘ground work’ on a long line.
BTW at 16:50 when Mo puts his nose right to the ground, that is him asking to finish & come into you & that you’re his alpha ….

Hi Alicia, from NSW, AUS. I have not long found your videos and just want say thank you for doing them! they are soo helpful and I have learnt soooo much!! and yes mind blowing!! I've just bought a 4 yr old OTT, I'm just getting back into riding. I am going to follow your way of training and see how he goes! Looking forward to hopefully a transformation too haha
When he lunges he goes around for a bit, then swings his hind quarters out and stops, sometimes I can get him to go forward again other times he'll back up and I have to lead him forward. he seems to do it in the same spot and there is not fence close to him on that side, not sure why he does that...maybe he doesn't like the whip...
He also flicks his head up and down and around as if to say something is not right or he doesn't want to do it...I'm only lunging him in the sheep yards as I don't have a round yard, so its an odd shaped yard. the ground is not super hard but it's not soft. can that affect them?

Hi Rebecca! The problem you are having is that he is not going forward into the reins and he doesnt want to stay upright and pushing forward. Really important that you keep him forward infront of the whip so that he doesn't have a chance to stop and that when he starts to drift you catch him and correct before he stops. I would also check to rule out any discomfort or pain x

He seems like a great horse. I've enjoyed all the videos so far and I doubted writing this, but I feel like there are several tips and techniques used in this video that are very counterintuitive to what you are trying to achieve. You seem like a great and knowledgeable rider though. Granted, there are 100 ways and methods to train horses on the ground, many of which I've come across and combined while backing and training young horses, but this just wasn't it. (for example, just to name one: 20 minutes from coming into the pen to it being done of trotting and cantering around on the same side, that's how you keep the horse's attitude of getting on the lunge line and "GO, GO, GO" and them bucking around. Yes I've worked with crazy and young horses, but I have never lunged a horse and not have them walk in the beginning or throughout and relax in between to get the right mindset)
She's trying to teach connection that's why she kept changing paces, the transitions get him to use his back to get him to round down and help him develop them for when she gets on his back. Which is part of why he's going and bucking as he's not sure what to do with that feeling yet. At least that is how I understand what she is doing. Watch his head during the session. I feel she is working on a different thing while lunging than maybe you do when lunging and she works on the walking at the end As you said different people have different methods though and this has only been a week.
I always start training horses to WALK in a controlled way on a circle without turning in. IF they turn in you have lost control and obedience. Ask them to go over by showing them to move away from you. Never allow them to turn in when you go down a gear to walk from the trot. Basics first then canter. I also train the lateral work sooner rather than later. Use the word OVER regularly even in the stable and guide their body using your hand behind the girf or on the top of their bottom.
@@wwaxwork Yea, this is really for horses of the track, I suspect. He's prob been worked in trot and canter far more than walk. This is only the 1st week.

Mowgley is 4 years old which is older than the average age of 3 that you would start with ridden work 💕
This is a good lunge lesson. What is your aim of when he responds appropriately, whether trot or canter - to cut him off so quickly & change the gait? As a horse, I might think "OK, she said trot. Got it." But instead of letting him do a full circle or two to understand the 'trot or 'canter' ask/command - you seem to immediately switch him off of what you just asked him to do? I'm not seeing the positive enforcement of what you asked him to do? Personally, I believe horses can learn the words trot & canter just well as the bird call sound & the word hup. But that's just my own take & personal experience. He's doing so well for only 1 week with you. I think it's because of all the free time you spent with you & the pets & chit chatting with him. It helps to settle OTTBs.
Thank you for your feedback 🤩 As outlined in the video, the purpose of changing between the trot and canter is to use the canter to help Mowgley seek the contact and then drop back to trot and that he keeps taking the contact. This is to help him understand seeking the contact before riding. As you can see Mowgley picks this system up well and responds positively.
@@YourRidingSuccess - thank you so much for that explanation! I did hear you say that in the video, but it didn't 100% resonate because of the almost immediate gait changes. I understand your intention now even though it does seem very abrupt to me... & I suspect to beautiful Mowgley as well, as evidence by his frustration bucks. With all that said, I ♥️ that you put pads underneath his lunging girth for his comfort. Thoroughbreds have such high, narrow withers ( not designed for bareback, even at a walk 😉 ) Such wonderful progress & bonding in such a short time. He's a sweetie, glad he's in your care. Is he a retrain & sell horse or do you plan to have him as a forever horse?
