      its really amazing, cant believe I havent heard it till now, it has that same bittersweet quality of worship music that feels unbearably sorrowful and heavy yet manages to be hopeful and uplifting.

    My mother was born in Uijeongbu. I was born in Seoul; naturalized as a U.S. citizen because it was within the U.S. Embassy. My father was stationed there by the U.S. Army.
    She sang Arirang to me as a child, I learned to sing it and perform at a Korean Presbyterian Church. Which although at the time was terrifying, I look back and cherish those memories.
    My mother made me garden and cook with her, which I hated as a child. I wanted to play outside. I can cook Korean food because of those experiences.
    Today, I am a Traditional Chinese and Korean Medicine Practitioner and it is because of my mother's strong influence pertaining to herbs and food that inspired me to serve in this path.
    My last conversation with her I expressed wanting to become a Doctor of which she greatly encouraged me to fulfill. I became a Doctor of Eastern Medicine and not Western. I hope she's ok with that.
    She and my father were both robbed and murdered in bed at home in 1998. I'm grateful that I picked myself up and kept moving forward. I miss them everyday and their spirits motivate me to do good and to be great in this world.

    I hear this song and have an idea of the land and people of Korea, but as a foreigner not really understanding, of course. But it also makes me hungry because the name of my favorite restaurant, in Lexington Kentucky, is "Arirang Garden". The best Korean food I've eaten.

    Man...I am not a Korean but an Asian just like the Korean. When I hear and tried miserably in singing it in Hangul... it made me cry.. Hell yeah! haha.. I can feel the air of patriotism, the hardship and a longing to be reunited with loved ones & to be oneself again. I would like to see a united Korea one day and it will be a day of joy for the koreans. Let there be a reconciliation between the two divided Korea. I hope that the US and China give back the koreans their freedom of buliding their once proud nation as one and let them choose what kind of government they want to use to run their united country. Hopefully one day, Korea as 1 nation. Arirang. Love that old song. Please forgive me if I said wrongfully here for I am just an outsider. Thank you.

    Thank you very much, when all the people of a Country have the same dificulties, for keep going in it, they choose a way to express it and doing it together, is more confortable, you can hold the weight on everyone and not on one alone. No matter where you are, you can still share this feeling. I love this song always tear me up and I loved the rock version too.

      Korea has been a country with many wounds since a long time ago
      the plight of one's ancestors
      the separation of the family from the war
      from a divided country to the present
      Parents, grandfather, grandmother, pain and sorrow of all ancestors
      This is what we say "han."
      "Han" is in Arirang

    Korean arirang song and Tamil arariro are exactly same. I wonder, how can it possible ? Tamil Nadu (India) women's work in farms so hard so that they carry their baby behind their shoulders if that baby cries they sang this ariraro song.
    Everything children in our state knows this song only by their mother they didn't learn this in school or institution.

    Muito bonito. Só faltou uma tradução da letra... mas, creio que podemos entender os sentimentos dos coreanos. Verdade é que a última vez que o Brasil foi invadido foi em 1865 quando o Exército de Lopez invadiu a Argentina, Mato Grosso e chegou ao Rio Grande do Sul.

    What does 'Han' mean?

    • @theenvironmentalist2535
      @theenvironmentalist2535 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      its like the word for 'korean spirit'

    • @sunghachoi-lee2931
      @sunghachoi-lee2931 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      it's like the feeling of when you are oppressed and the anger/sorrow builds up inside of you.
      people use the word e.g. your family has to be separated forever, apartheid, your child being kidnapped and was found killed etc
      it's a very powerful emotion, you won't use it in daily terms
      some people have "han" in their heart and never forget it their whole lives.
      they also use it before they die as well... "my Han was that I never .... "

    Hey~NO it's not from our poverty in modern years. It's from our very very old ancestors.
    Arirang is not supposed to mean that .,Arirang is Sanskrit .Ari means lover or king , rang means splitting up so I think this song is about our king and people not just about lover song. And I think that's the reason our Korean people has sung this for so many years.
    I estimate origin years about 10000 years ago cuz It would be the time we used Sanskrit.
    아리랑은 한의 노래도 아니고 우리 민족정서가 한이라고 하는 것은 그저 일제 식민 민족말살정책일뿐입니다. 아리랑은 만년도 더된 우리 선조가 우리지도자를 칭송하는 노래입니다.
    가난한 현실의 한을 노래한게 아리랑이라는 병신같은 말은 그저 일제민족말살 매트릭스에 놀아나는 불쌍한 노인들의 착각입니다. 우리 민족정서가 한이라고 하는 것같이 병신같은 일은 없습니다. 일제가 너네는 나라잃은 슬픔에 한탄이나하라고 세뇌한 것입니다. 우리 민족처럼 위대하고 광활하며 진취적인 민족도 찾기 힘듦니다. 최근 일본새끼들의 식민사관을 모두 깨부수는 역사가 밝혀지고있습니다. 우리민족의 정서가 한이라고 생각하는 당신은 병신입니다.. 일제가 심어놓은것을 그냥 믿는 병신입니다. 한이라는 감정은 누구나 가질수 있는것이지만 그딴게 우리민족의 유일한 정서로 생각한다는게 말이나 됩니까 당신이 일본새끼들을 생각해보고 스스로 생각해보십시오 우리민족정서가 한인지. 심지어 교고서에서 그렇다고 아직도 세뇌하고 있으니 이 얼마나 참담한 교육현실입니까?

    I am even more convinced that 'Arirang" is "hareram"....an exclamation or a way of calling out to God ..or Buddha ...in times of distress ...away to appeal to the higher powers...Am I right????...someone help me out here...

      pretty Leanne: Arirang is a song that is about the motherland Korea, it is almost S. Korea's national anthem. I have seen Arirang performed on ARIRANG TV many times with english subtitles and I have never seen it to be about a kidnapped girl. There are lots of videos of Arirang on you tube with english translations.
