    Watching it on my MacBook Pro 16 inch and yeah, the 4K from the FX3 is clearly better/sharper/clearer than the 1080p from the A7IV. Doesn’t mean that the 1080p is useless. If I didn’t know I was watching two different picture qualities, not sure I would have thought about it...

    Recently came back from holiday where I did a lot of filming with my A7IV. Yeah, it always breaks my heart when I shoot 120fps in 1080p . The image just looks soft and pixilated even though the colours look good. Mind you, there are some ways to finesse the footage to bring it up a bit. But do I regret this purchase? Absolutely NOT! This has been my most desired camera for a long time! It ticks most of my boxes for what I want from a camera and I love the footage I get from it. Perhaps I might get a Topaz Labs license to do something about that 1080p slo-mo.

    I have the a7sIII and the a7IV. The IV's 24/30p is nicely detailed, but the rolling shutter is still really bad. My biggest negative with the IV is the slow readout speed - which means lots of RS and poorer FPS compared to the 4+ year old a7III. I mostly use it as a crop camera for video, and in aps-c mode its brilliant. Its also my photo workhorse. But I still wish it was faster.

    Yes, the difference is really noticeable. I wanted to take a7c3, but I didn't have enough money. I took a74. As an alternative solution, I shoot 4K 60fps and slow it down with a "Twixtor" or "SpeedX" two times. Or I shoot in full hd 120fps, and with the help of a video enhancer I convert to 4K. I'll wait until the a7S IV comes out, then I'll upgrade :))

    • @JasonMorrisphotocinema

      Unfortunately clear image zoom doesn’t work in 100fps. Already too much processing for it’s power

    • @gadgetphilosophy8290
      @gadgetphilosophy8290 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting. Firstly I said and crop mode/apsc mode. Not clear image zoom. Secondly I tried it on the 8 bit slow mo and it gave me great results. If anything there should be less processing as it’s using less sensor than full frame. As I said based on your previous video it should be a much cleaner image. Not 10 bit but cleaner less mushy. Love your work man. Lovely family.

    I have the A7 IV too and love it. As for the 100/120fps footage it's unfortunately really soft. I have made quite a few tests myself, comparing 120, 60 and 24 fps HD footage. The 60 and 24 fps footage is one of the sharpest HD footage I have seen but the 120 fps footage is really blurry in comparison. I'm sure in 120 fps mode it's not oversampling anymore, probably some pixel binning or line skipping and filtering. It's still very usable though so I'm not complaining too much :) For me it's one of the best hybrid cameras.

    Happy to report that Topaz Labs actually did the trick! The upscaling from this program turned out fantastic! The slo-mo is still there, and the video looks perfectly crisp. For $200, it may very well be a solution for A7IV users who want that 4K 120fps without paying the A7SIII/FX3 price tag.

    Hey Jason, I posed a question about a week ago on one of your earlier videos asking if I should get the A7IV or FX3. You told me I should go with the FX3 because it is more future proof.
    I have actually changed my mind and am now deciding between the A7SIII and the A7IV. I really wanted to have a viewfinder with my camera. My budget is $3900.
    Would you propose that I buy the A7SIII or the A7IV? I don't want any limitations to video, especially because I want to do client work and I'm afraid the 4k60 crop and the overheating might work against me sometimes. However, I do shoot photos for social media sometimes and I would like a camera that can take good photography for social media and self portrait photography(I shoot many photos of myself to post on social media).
    I still have to buy a lens and lighting. I would buy a cheap prime if I bought the A7SIII and would have to save up for a better lens and lighting(shouldn't take long). With the A7IV, I would be able to get a lens and lighting because of how much cheaper the A7IV. However, I don't want to compromise on body quality and I want the one that is going to be most futureproof and the best camera for someone who does a lot of video and likes to take photos, but isn't mainly a photo shooter.
    Which should I get? Thanks.

    • @dinbali
      @dinbali 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      If I may add my comment to this...Might be able help make a decision.
      I was also deciding between a7IV and a7SIII, and I got the the a7IV. The FX3 is the exact same camera as the a7SIII, and unless you need the few extras it has, which are all on the outside (except the brighter red frame on the fx3 indicating recording?) then I wouldn't get the FX3.
      The 4K 120fps on the a7SIII is something I'm missing on the a7IV, but thats the only thing. The crop in 4k 60 doesn't matter as its oversampled 7k so I don't see any noticeable bad resolution from the crop, and I bought the Sony E 16mm f 2.8, goes for under a 100 bucks used, just to use for crop mode in 4k 60, so I get a 24mm equivalent in 4K 60 when it's cropped. Kind of a workaround. And now theres even that new 11mm APS-C lens from sony.
      The a7IV has focus breathing compensation, the a7SIII doesn't and likely won't get it in that upcoming ''big firmware update'' where it likely will get the animal eye autofocus and that colored focus checking stuff, which the a7SIII currently doesn't have.
      Also the newer body of the a7IV with the ability to switch between photo and video mode, and you can customize both modes, so you don't need to change settings all the time when switching. The a7SIII body feels just a bit more better built, the a7IV feels like a bit hollow, kind of, but just a bit, it doesn't feel bad or anything. Also the a7IV is better in lowlight, if in low ISO. At 12800 the a7SIII gets so clean again, and the a7IV cant keep up anymore. The a7IV is sharper though cause of the higher megapixel censor.
      I will sell my a7IV when the a7SIV comes out. There was a 5 year gap between the a7SII and the a7SIII if I'm not wrong, so I guess the a7SIV will come in like 2-3 years? The a7IV will at that point sell better, with less loss than the a7SIII because the a7SIII will be the older camera, plus everyone will want the newer model, while the a7IV will still be the newest of the hybrids.
      If you are worried about photos on social media, the a7SIII is good enough with 12mp, unless you wanna crop in a lot or make big prints you won't notice.
      Hopefully this could help you in some way

    • @JonasBecker
      @JonasBecker 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Professional A7iv Videographer /Photographer here. If you don't need the 4k120 and I'm taking needing, not wanting the A7IV wins every time.
      - cheaper (more money for lenses, light, etc)
      - better photos (more MP)
      - better 4k24 and 4k30 as it's 7k oversampling
      - better lowlight up to 12.800, after that the FX3/a7siii wins
      - 1.5 crop Mode for when you need it
      - overheating can be prevented by flipping out the screen and opening the battery door, or you just go my route and use a VMount battery with a dummy battery. No overheating at all (just recorded a 4k24 interview for 2.5 hours yesterday in a room with around 27°c)
      - 4k60 with the crop isn't a dealbreaker if you think about the lens choice
      I bought the A7IV with the 24 1.4 GM and 85 Sigma DG DN 1.4 and it's a killer comb. still got my Tamron 17-28 and 28-75 for when I need the versatility.
      and if you actually need the 4k120 from time to time, just rent the FX3 (in Germany around 60€ per day) as you already own some awesome glass for it

    • @itsallgone5077
      @itsallgone5077 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JonasBecker Thanks for the reply! I do worry about the overheating as it seems to be very inconsistent. Some people have no problems and others have problems even when changing the settings, opening the screen and battery compartment, and using a dummy battery. Maybe you can ease some of my following concerns.
      • I do a lot of handheld and the rolling shutter makes me feel a little off put.
      • I do worry about having to work around the crop
      •The EVF is better on the A7SIII
      •The A7SIII can shoot raw video
      Overall, it seems the A7SIII was made for professional work and the A7IV was made for more hobbyist work(that's atleast what everyone who has done a review on this platform about the two has said). I want a camera that is going to hold up in the professional field and I worry that the A7IV will only be able to do that on the photography side of things and not the video as much despite its great video capabilities.
      Many have said that the A7III was much better of a balance than the A7IV which seems to be slightly more oriented to photo. This is my entire thought process. I can get the more expensive, workhorse camera now and then save for lighting and better lenses which won't cost as much as the A7SIII. I can even start saving for lights, lenses and a B cam after that big purchase.
      At the end of the day, it's all the same amount of money, but it sounds better to say "after spending $3900, I only have to save up another $2500-$3000 to get a B cam and lights," instead of saying "after spending $3900, I have to save another $3500 in order to get an A cam."
      It seems to me that if you were to take a professional photographer and a professional videographer and give both of them the A7IV to shoot with for one day, the professional photographer would have a much better, fulfilled experience with the camera than the videographer would. The opposite would probably be true with the A7SIII. As someone who does video about 80-90% of the time, this worries me. I could be wrong, though. If I am, please feel free to correct me.
      Maybe I am overthinking it. Do you understand what I am saying? Any advice you can give me or flaws that you can point out in my thought process? I appreciate it.

    Seriously, what was the point of comparing 4k vs HD?

      A lot of people still use 1080p. A lot of my corporate work deliverables is 1080p. Most clients don’t want 4K. It’s still not needed

    Really? People still shoot in HD? I had no idea! I’m being sarcastic of course. I haven’t shot regular HD in… God knows when. I shoot everything in 4K.. sometimes even 6K.. Comparing those two cameras like you did… Is kind of silly. It’s kind of like comparing a Tesla to a Ford focus. And the winner is…

      Definitely not a silly comparison because they are for two different budgets that ultimately could me making content for the same market
