  • Designed specifically for active outdoor enthusiasts, the all-new Winnebago® Revel takes a no-nonsense approach to adventure, with straightforward design and function-driven features. Taking full advantage of the proven 4×4 Mercedes-Benz® Sprinter chassis, the Revel’s 3-liter turbo-diesel puts 325 lbs./ft. of torque through an on-demand 4WD system, complete with high/low range and hill descent mode for added off-road capability. Inside, the Revel’s unique features start with a floorplan designed around a 140-cu. ft. gear garage with a power lift bed. A full galley, including a 2.5-cu. ft. compressor refrigerator, makes meal prep a breeze, while the all-in-one wet bath and gear closet boast a cassette-style toilet that eliminates the need for a separate black water holding tank. Add a standard solar power system, diesel-powered heating, a dinette with a pull-up table that converts to additional sleeping space, and many more innovative features and the result is the new Revel: quite simply the most off-road capable RV Winnebago has ever built.

    I'm a professional RV'r, I own and drive a truck. I'm sitting in it right now in a truck stop. ;-)
    The Revel needs a generator. Those batteries are a PIA, and it does not take much to drain them, especially as they age. Running my little 5 cup Black & Decker coffee pot triggers the generator on my truck, or APU. I have a bank of four AGM batteries in my semi, every two years they need to be replaced. $$$$$
    Those batteries in the Revel, boy did they bury them under that coach, does not look like fun to get to unless you have a hoist. And you do need to maintain them, clean the contacts regularly and check for tightness. Trust me, they are not maintenance free.
    One thing that is nice, is the Espar heater, they really generate some heat, and are a very proven product in real world situations. I have one in my truck, they are normally good for 8 to 10 years if you maintain them.
    Then that little fridge... Same one I have, exactly. It will suck the batteries dry in short order, it must have continuous power, as when the coach power drops below 12 volts, it shuts down. Normally within a few hours. Everything spoils rather quickly if left unattended.
    Then we have the Diesel MB motor... Oh don't get me started. Not so much the motor but the emissions. The SCR/DPF system to be exact, along with the sensors associated with the system. VERY expensive to maintain, and INCREDIBLY EXPENSIVE to repair. Sometimes up to $10,000 +. These new diesels are not for the faint of pocketbook.
    It is a cool package, but to many shortcomings for me. I would need to install a generator somewhere.

    Finally, a Revel video where the 4x4 system controls and the
    Sprinter Van is addressed a bit more. In every other video I have watched (4 or
    5) they spend most of the time on the Winnebago part of the van. They never give much insight into the 4x4 system and most of the Sprinter Van controls. I have always wondered if the Sprinter was an all-wheel-drive full time or if it can be shifted on the fly or
    just what and how it worked. Nice Job I have a way better understanding of the
    whole system now.

    I thought the Revel was an excellent campervan until I read the comments, especially those left by Justrucking2 Waterloo and Greg Ward. Now I'd rather be inclined to buy just a Mercedes Sprinter 4x4 van and have it designed and built by seasoned campers like Justrucking2 Waterloo, and no doubt built considerably cheaper! BTW, kudos to Robert Hesinger for his thorough walkthrough!

    As an experienced RVer (with spouse) and an active sports enthusiast, right away I see a lot of usage gaps not addressed, especially for any trip beyond 1 day.
    1. Clothing storage. No dedicated space. Using bottom of garage area for clothing space omits using the garage as a garage. Also lowering bed for use, must ensure full clearance for bed drop... meaning bikes, etc, cannot stand upright (video conveniently shows just 1 bike laying on the floor). Video shows how poor the storage space is in this implementation where even the 30AMP power cable has no home (plus all the other stuff they tossed into the shower for that oh so convenient load/unload space if you want to use just the toilet).
    2. Kitchen storage (pots/pans, dishes, groceries)... 2 cupboards for all... that's not going to fly with the wife.
    3. PITA clip-on window shades... take off, store (somewhere), put on again - every night, or whenever you need to change in/out of sports gear.
    4. Idea of using shower/toilet for storage space... not a lot of things I want to put in with my toilet.
    5. Not 100% sure I heard correctly, but heater runs only on diesel? For extended stays would want to use electric/shore power.
    6. Entertainment system (option) but no real provision for a single TV screen in a usable space (other than above cooktop where removal to use the cooktop would be necessary). Why not a flip-down (or other mount option) above the windshield.
    7. AC above the bed. Ever try sleeping with one of these in use? They are as noisy as a semi-truck. I think swapping the vent fan with the AC location would work better.
    8. More widow venting needed everywhere. Why not do more with the rear windows, sliding door, etc (ie: flip-out, etc)?
    9. "Outside shower" ports are all inside, meaning a door must be left open while using any of the shower ports.
    10. That black water (toilet) cassette thing connected to the grey water as well, or always a separate manual dump? For hookup stays with sewer connection, it should allow for dump through that. Maybe it does but video isn't clear.
    ... and so on...

    My favorite adventurous cousin who's always doing the most, purchased this rig and we all think it's versatility is amazing. He uses this as his daily driver to work. He said he hardly puts any fuel in it. It doesn't look like an RV. It looks like a Overland recreation vehicle. It's pretty stealthy.

    you do a great job on these videos. I have several friends who have traveled across country just to buy from you after hearing about the professional attitudes at Colonial, ( it makes a huge difference!) and they cannot say enough positive things about their experience. You are one of two dealers I am considering when I make my final purchase decision probably in about 6 months or so. My local dealer who has a lot of class B's...well....lets just say I left due to their attitude. They did not take me to be a serious buyer, and at the time was considering a unit they had marked down, and cash to buy. I must say, glad I did not buy once I learned a bit more about what to look for that fits my planned lifestyle with a class B, but I went in there with plans to buy if the unit was in good condition, so their loss.

    Great video, a lot of good info. Two questions: 1. What is the actual ground clearance of the Revel? I have read that the 4x4 has "extra inches of ground clearance", but haven't seen an actual number. 2. Is it possible to add another window in the bed area on the passenger side? Probably the less window area, the warmer the van stays, but light is important to me. Thx for your answers.

    I certainly appreciate that $134K (or more like $156K for one with all the options) is a crap-ton of money, but I can't say that I'm surprised about the price. In the US, the only other 4WD class B (excluding custom conversions) that I'm aware of is the ERA, and it's just as expensive as the Revel! They'll sell every single one they make, and probably without having to discount them off MSRP (like is the case with every other class B on the market). I'm stuck...I need a class B that can tow a motorcycle trailer, I want one on the short chassis, and I'd love 4WD. Although both the Transit and Promaster have hitches, they can't pull much because the GCVWR (gross combined vehicle weight rating) is only a tiny bit higher than the GVWR! That leaves me with MB-Sprinter RVs, and older class B models built on Ford/Chevy/Dodge van chassis as my only options. I think Winnebago was smart to build this RV. If I was retired, and able to use it for more than a month of every year, I'd suck it up and buy one. As it is though, I can't justify spending $150K on this (or any) new class B.

      best buy a Ford E350 and get a 4v4 kit installed on it. cause until American companies start making aftermarket lift kits for them this is what you get, not much. EU 4x4 is just that 4 tires turning, its not about ground clearance to them.

    • @toptobottom247
      @toptobottom247 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I checked into this. You could increase the rim side or go a little wider which would raise the rig a little but fuel would suffer and this rig is not designed for Jeep style rock crawling.

    • @Gantzz321

      Anti Petrolhead that is why I am going to with a F350 or Ram 3500, diesel, removed bed, and a slide on homemade Composite Camper. I really want to go where 4x4's can only go and live there for periods of time. They are Campers give way more room than a van and the truck gives me the ground clearance to go places this thing cannot.
      This truck is exactly what I am looking to build myself. With a couple of minor changes.

    Very good job on the video. I am loving the Revel and what it can do and am waiting for one to show up in SoCal. That said, I am also wondering how big a market there will be for a $135,000, solar only, cassette toilet/wetbath rig? I have solar to maintain my batteries in my Arctic Fox truck camper, but a propane generator is my primary charging method. Without propane, how cold does the Revel fridge stay? Warm beer is an extreme violation on my trips.

      Hello Woody,Thank you for watching the Revel video and as for the market...there are certainly a lot of RVers buying them since the entire country is sold out for months. I like the fact that there is no TV, the shower space is functional, and getting rid of the black tank is a step in the right direction. I applaud getting rid of propane and going with all eclectic however I think there is some concern about battery capacity and being able to create enough energy from solar when you are off grid. Would love to hear from some owners about how well this is working out.

    Can you delete the diesel heater and that side fiberglass popout because their the first thing to get ripped off the vehicle that and the awning .And can you get the 16 in tires for better rim protection? Always better to have bigger tires smaller rims for 4x4's less tire and rim damage when you air down the tires.

    • @ColonialRV
      @ColonialRV  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Jimbotheassclown,Thank you for taking time to watch the Revel video. To answer your question about the heater Winnebago does not offer an alternative to the diesel heater. The Fiberglass popout is standard and can not be changed as well. Also, the tires and 17" Rims are an option and if you didn't want them you can get the standard 16" and Continental tires. If you have any further questions please kindly let us know.Thank youBobby

    Nice job. You mentioned that additional solar panels could be added to the roof, however there doesn’t appear to be space. How would you do this? Do they have larger panels available? 150’s perhaps? Remove the AC and add another? Just wondering how much can go on the roof and how it would fit. Lastly will the batteries charge when you are driving the vehicle? What about at idle? Thanks.

    • @ColonialRV
      @ColonialRV  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello Ben,Thank you for watching. To answer your questions about the solar, if you wanted to add more panels you can either add a portable on the ground level( Camping side). If you wanted to add more to the roof it would take some planning & adjustments since there is not much room left. As for the batteries they do charge when your engine is running through the alternator at Idle. When you are actually driving the faster you drive the more your Chassis battery will charge. If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to give us a call here at Colonial RV.Thank youEnjoy your dayBobby

      Colonial RV can you get a battery isolator option?

    • @4wdhome106
      @4wdhome106 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Colonial RV The faster you drive you’ll still have the engine running in about the same speed, only in another gear. Since the charging is done in the engine, not on the wheels, the engine speed determines the level of charging. However, it’s not very unlikely that there is an upper limit (depending on the technical design), so for example any engine speed above 6000 rpm gives the same charging as 6000 rpm. There could also be a lower limit, where the charging volt gets close to or below the battery volt. This would however be a bit disappointing. I don’t know much about “life under the hood”, but I would recommend just driving normal and letting the charging do it’s job.
      My first claim lead to getting the best charge by drive as many minutes/hours as possible, in any speed.

    Nice rig! A few things to consider however. A 16-18 ft off-road Toyhauler trailer (about $13,000 new), offers the same amenities/utility, and allows you the use of your 4X4 tow vehicle for running around. Not sure I want so much $$$ tied-up in a single vehicle.

    How much does the fully loaded van in the video cost? I like the paint/interior, A/C, wheels, sound system upgrade etc... That is the one I’m looking for. Is it very easy to modify? Like adding stuff sacks or little shelves to the walls and cabinetry for extra storage?

      $168,440.00 (Canadian) which seems pretty steep considering an optioned out 4x4 cargo van its based on is $100,000.00 less. I love functionality and looks of this van but I don't see a hundred thousand dollars worth of upgrades.

    Kind of not feeling the oversell here. Winnebago used to be a more affordable option. This is to drive for a ski weekend; the storage-shower I’m betting is a fail. But I like the idea of diesel interior heater; wish it was described. Also, class?-not clear.

      1 BIGGUN yes, but not absurdly overpriced. An empty shell, white Sprinter 4x4 costs just about 48-50% of that. Winnebago builds quality stuff, and nifty stuff that you don’t even know how much you want until you use it. I would make a very educated guess that you would spend $110-115,000 for the van and all the extra fixtures and materials. I think it’s well worth $20,000 to let the experts do it and have a warranty on it where you know it’s perfect and if not they will correct it.

    Nice job. Coouple of questions. How do you access the 3 bateries below if you have to replace them? Do you have to jack the vehicle up for acces? I want to mount my bicycle in the storage using Thule mounting hardware. I need to know where robust mounting points on the floor is? is that even possible since the floor is covered? Thank you.

    • @ColonialRV
      @ColonialRV  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Robin,Sorry we didn't show the batteries which are located under the vehicle. While it would help to have a lift to replace batteries a tech can use the crawler to get under and replace if needed. As for the storage area in the rear (under the bed) there are mounting positions on the side. Thank you

      Kevin Krooss - Well, most RV’s have restrooms. The platform does have some respectable off-road features for getting off the beaten path. And after making my comment I started wondering if that was a portable commode. If so, it could be slid out or even placed outside for use. But I can’t help but think of kids... "I gotta pee." Hang on, let me unload the closet. Daddy! Just a minute, only one more shelf. DADDY I GOTTA PEE! Wait... O.K. done. "Too late, sorry daddy." LOL!
      EDIT - No, not moveable. That thing is mounted. It is not portable.
