    film cameras do have flash sync speeds, but the RB and RZ and sone other medium format cameras are an exception, because they use a leaf shutter in the lens. that's why you dont have to worry about them. usually the flash sync speed will be indicated with a red number, or an x next to the shutter speed

    Great video. I have an Hasselblad 500C/M but pretty much all of what you've said are useful with every leaf shutter camera. I originally wanted to use the exact same adapter you used with my old cheap yongnuo flash+triggers. But since my yongnuo flash it broke, I just bough few days ago a Godox TT600 with his own flash trigger. So I found out that some triggers have directly a jack for the PC sync cable. And in this case I do not need anymore an adapter. So it depends on what trigger you use 🙂

      Very true. Thanks for the watch. I too picked up the Hasselblad recently. Same technique.

    When you are out in the field shooting and need on-camera flash here is a new product you might like to try or review (I'm not a salesman). The Godox Lux junior (less than $100) is a small flash that can be attached to any digital or film camera (it has a central single hot shoe port so it will probably work on most digital camera, it did on my 5D M4). It also comes with a sync PC cord so you can plug this into your 35 mm camera (it is very small, light weight), or any film camera that has a hot shoe or cold shoe with a PC port. I used this with my Minolta SRT 101 and RB 67 and other medium format camera and worked a treat. It plugs straight into the Pro SD cold shoe and the sync cord into the PC slot. The only problem is reach as this is a small flash, but it has a manual adjustment wheel to dial in 100% down to 1/64 power. I used an old flash unit with my SRT 101 years ago and this is about equal to the flash output from that unit (back in the 70s). The only problem is it takes some time to re-charge (a few seconds) after high powered flashes. Great for fill-in flash or when you need extra light.

    I found your video very useful and you are correct there not many youtube videos on this subject. I would like to add a few comments for your viewers. I have a Godox trigger XPro (C); the C is for use with canon digital cameras. The X Pro is very versitile and can be programmed for many channels and groups of lights. The neat thing it also has a built in sync cable so you don't have to use the Kaiser cold/hot shoe. When I first tried the strobe lighting I used my 180mm lens. I would fire but had a 2 sec delay. This drove me crazy. I tried another lens (the 127 mm) and it worked perfectly, as it did with my other Sekor lenses. The 180 mm works perfectly without flash but this was not listed when bought the lens (the PC fitting was broken). So if you buy a used lens you should try it with flash to make sure it works for studio work. I also have an RB pro body without the cold shoe. I was able to buy a Manfrotto screw-in grip that fits on the top of my 055 tripod that I attached a cold shoe to hold the Xpro and this worked fine (albeit) the RB Pro had to be on a tripod which is common in the studio.

    Awesome video, thank you! I think a lot of novice film photographers are curious about how you set the correct exposure for the shot because most folks are used to chimping until they figure it out on digital . Maybe a follow up video touching on how to use a digital camera along side the film camera to dial in the right flash or strobe power etc. cheers!

    Thanks for these tips, especilly the ones to avoid misfires. Another aspect, not specific to the RB67, is the correct measurement of light, in particular outdoor when having to mix ambient and flash light... That's more critical with a film camera, no way to check the results during the shoot...

    Thanks for that great video. I have bought the adapter and it works fine. A question : what happens if we shoot on M position ? I have a 180mm stuck on M, so for now I only use lights and no strobes with it.

    • @KevinDeal
      @KevinDeal  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't think shooting in the M position will hurt anything but it may not trigger correctly. Modern triggers are meant to trigger in the X mode. M mode is for those old large bulbs you used to see the press use back in the 1930's, 40's etc.

    Thanks for sharing useful info. But...I do not see a place where and how could I fix hot shoe adapter on my camera...I've got RB67. Have you just screwed your adapter onto the body directly ? Also, I'm thinking about using my Godox trigger, is there any risk of damage ? I mean voltage. Well, I know RB67 doesn't need any batteries, but does it mean it's compatible with any modern flash ?

    • @KevinDeal
      @KevinDeal  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It sounds like you're missing the shoe. My RB67 had it built onto the camera. Maybe yours broke off or the version of your camera doesn't have one? You'll need some way to mount both the adapter and trigger to your camera. That's the first step. Once you do that, your Godox trigger will be fine, and you have nothing to worry about.

      I use the Flashpoint AD600BM. It’s all you need. Since I recommend stopping down to f8 or f11 so you don’t get ambient light from your house lights I always recommend getting something a bit more powerful. It’s good to have the extra power and not need it than the other way around. It’s usually $550 but it’s on sale for $399 right now. I’ve seen it for as low as $350 on Black Friday but we will see with all the inflation over the last year. $399 may be the cap now.

      Godox and Flashpoint have updated the menu layout a few times, so it's not a guarantee it will be exactly like in the video. What you are looking for in your respective model is "Power Saving Mode". I believe you just hit the Menu button and scroll down to Power Saving Mode. When you select it, there should be a time you can select for power saving to kick in.

      Something that I've noticed since I put this video out last year on my end is that over time, my triggers and the adapter kind of don't 100% align up with each other. Like the metal is slightly bending over time. And as a result, I have to gently push the trigger when I shoot in order for it to make contact and fire. Which sucks.
      And of course, I do have to ask if the switch on your lenses is set to X or M? It should be X.
