You would think that an arch angel like Gabriel would have more than sufficient power to just have the coffin materialize outside the grave. However, where would the fun be in that? ;) lol!

I am convinced that nobody could've done the role of gabriel in this instance quite like Christopher Walken. I mean you really believe that he is the archangel Gabriel. Phenomenal actor

Because originaly it is Gabriel who tortured Lucifer, in greek mythology Gabriel was the Hermes who tried to force Prometheus (Lucifer) to bow before Zeus... and reveal his secrets to him.

That is interesting. I think Gabriel has the unfortunate honor of being the 3rd most recognizable Archangel after Michael and Lucifer. So if you’re writing a rebellious Archangel that isn’t Lucifer and Michael is going to remain loyal then Gabriel is the easiest choice

I was 16 or 17 when this movie came out and the trailers always freaked me out, man do I regret not seeing it then.

You'd think he'd dig up Chairman Mao or Napoleon, or something if he wanted a great military commander. But I guess that'd make a more complicated story so they made up the Hawthorne character.
He didn't necessarely needed a great military commander, but the most depraved one also. His war was one of the soul, not of strategy. Thus he needed one which was particularly evil.
I believe the body just died so that might be another reason. Soul hasn't been claimed yet.

I mean, technically speaking, I believe most Christians are supposed to believe that the soul remain in the body until judgement day, and then some are saved, others damned.
Hawthornes might not have been a great commander but he was a great cannibal, that was the real prize. He was so abhorrent in his commanding.
