I live in Lisbon and just returned from Miami. I was shocked at the price of groceries in the USA. By the way Lidl is more expensive than local grocery stores Pingo Doce or Continente. We also have fabulous fresh food markets in several areas of the city. Of course you have not factored in the difference in salaries as others have pointed out
7:28 Ariel is a British brand, not American. What you are calling of "Portuguese brand" are in fact self brand and/or white-label (no brand/label, produced for the distribution shop by a third party). As those are products without marketing costs, they have lower prices.
@@andrewcairns7502 thank you, sir. My videos are meant to familiarize people with Lisbon society and topography before they come so they know what to expect.
- Lidl ( as Aldi and Norma) are german discounters. - If you have good eyes: It is EU regulation, that each item has to be declared with the price per liter, kilogram or serving. The last one is especially interresting if you need ever washing powder...
Cheap for Americans and Northern Europeans. Not for local people who struggle to put food on the table and find a place to live . Real estate is way way WAY overpriced .
Lido is great in Vienna, too. And the price is the price is the price. You don't have to buy 3 to a fair price. Don't need an app! Shopping is a pleasure.
Saying that Lisbon is inexpensive is almost offensive at this point. Always Americans.. when Portuguese people are suffering so much with the high cost of living
You compared very different products, so this is a bit all over the place. The scented "pearls" you pointed out are notoriously expensive, even the European brands, which exist, btw. It's not because it's an American brand, it's because it's _a_ brand. It's not even detergent, it's just perfume. What you showed next to those pearls was liquid detergent for delicate textiles (silks and wool, for example), and it was the off-brand - as were many of the other products you showed which were much cheaper. Those are all very different things. Friskies, for example, belongs to Nestlé, which isn't an American company. Brand products are expensive, but large supermarket chains such as Continente, Auchan and Pingo Doce all have their own brand, and those products are always much cheaper. Btw, you won't find any Lidl close to Rato (where you were in the video). You'll need to get to Saldanha or S. Sebastião for the closest Lidl. But that advice on shoes is spot on.
@@Palmieres Thank you for the clarifications, but don’t look too deep into it. Americans know the cost of everyday products. I was showing what was on the shelves and the prices. It’s a direct price comparison, regardless of brand. For the thousands of Americans who are looking at Portugal as a possible place to retire, these simple price comparisons help them do the math. You’ll notice I do this in all of my videos. I didn’t go to Lisbon as a tourist. I went as a researcher and student. I did everything in Lisbon that I do in Tampa, because I wanted to see the difference in “cost of living.” I went to the dentist, I got my hair cut, I went grocery shopping, I spoke with a real estate agent, I asked about utility cost (and surprised it’s included in most rents!) I went to a farmers market, I went clothes and shoe shopping, and I have a relocation agency that is helping me put together everything I need for my D7. I know this is more information than you wanted, but it may help you to understand why I shot the videos the way I did. Thank you for watching! 😎
Batatas fritas is French Fries. We don´t give them a different name whether it is regular potato or sweet potato, besides mentioning that the are made with "batata doce", sweet potatos
I was in Lisbon in 2016 on a business trip. I loved it, I’m hoping to go back one day ! The food, wine, architecture…the people were friendly too.

Excellent video thank you. Prices are cheap in Lisbon. I live in the UK and our prices are similar at the discount grocery chains.

Cheap for an American perhaps. The average wage in the Lisbon-Region is 1.054 € (2019). The Prime-Minister of Portugal gets 5.436,62 € a month.

Vegetables and fruits in Mediterranean countries are cheap and per kilos not like USA. I live in USA. It is horrible prices are skyrocketing!
Just wait until trump throws all the fruit and veg pickers out the country.... THEN you'll see skyrocketing.

Yea but how much is the minimum wage in Usa? In Portugal is 820 euros, one of the lowest in europe
