Learn to play G Major, D Major and A major Scales from the Open Strings. In this tutorial, Catherine shows you how you can easily learn all 3 of these One Octave Scales as well as their matching Arpeggios. This clear and simple tutorial is perfect for beginner violin students. This is also great for violin teachers seeking new and interesting ways to teach scales on the violin. In this video, you will learn how to play the G, D and A major scales from the open strings using the M hand shape or finger pattern, where the middle 2 fingers - the second and third fingers - are together. Using this hand pattern makes it very easy to transpose your scales from one string to the next!

Violin Vitamins thank you! 🥰🥰
Thank you so much! I'm teaching myself to play the fiddle. At 63 it's a bit more challenging. I've seen several things about the hand positions but it just never sunk in. I was watching your video and it all became clear. Now I understand what the big deal is, and now that I understand it, it is a big deal.
I looked at your list of videos and will be watching them all. This is silly but if I don't say something it's going to bother me. There are only 9 videos. When I see something like that this, an obviously talented teacher and musician but there's an abrupt stop, I wonder why. I hope it's because there was some tremendous opportunity that came up and you just don't have time to make videos. Whatever the reason please know that you have given this old lady a gift.
Hello Amy! So wonderful to hear you are learning and finding my videos are helpful! I think you may have watched a playlist with just 9 videos - here is the link to my channel home page - I currently have 152 videos on my channel and I upload every Friday! 😃 I hope you find some more that help you on your journey, and be sure to let me know if there is any topic you would like a video on! Have a great day, Catherine 🎻😊🎶 youtube.com/@violinwithcatherine8950

@@violinwithcatherine I have been studying violin for 3 months and I would like to strengthen myself with violin and you really helped me Thank you very much, God willing, I will continue to follow
I really Sorry if I bothered you with this question but😊 could you tell me what are the stages to start with ?
😬😬😊
Hi sometimes when i play the scales my fingers tend to move into positions which are slightly higher or lower than the required position . i dont realise this and i practice it in that way thereby repeating the incorrect position over time . how do i correct this . i prefer not to use any finger note stickers .
Hi! That’s a great question! This IS one of the big challenges of violin - playing IN TUNE. That’s great you’re not using stickers, because that tends to focus on LOOKING for the correct position, when the only real way of knowing if the fingers are in the correct place is by LISTENING. I suggest developing your Aural skills concurrently with your playing skills. Practice singing the notes. Really LISTEN to the pitch when you play. It takes time also to develop the aural skills required for violin playing 👂🏼🎶🎻

I have one doubt in D major scale--
We could have also played A as open but you played A on D.
Is there any specific rule to it in higher grades? Or its always a choice.
Pls explain
It's a choice. I always teach students to use 4th in scales because it is an opportunity to train the 4th finger. In pieces, we will do which one suits better (yes, sometimes 4th is better than the open string) :D
@@violinwithcatherine thank you ma’am for your support ♥️
@@_ig7_ you’re welcome!
It could have been easy to follow if it would have been played the violin with bow. This request is on behalf of the beginners. Otherwise the details explained is very clear and understandable.
Is it possible to add 7th interval in the arpegios?
Sure! That would make a 7th chord!
😍😍😍😍😲😲😲😲😻😻
