Glad I am one of the 27,135 viewers. Probably one of the only 33.33% that payed attention from start to finish.Glad to be one of the minority, very informative and helpful..Thank you!!
You touched upon key-notes that are extremely relevant in the Now Age. From "Live Experience" and "Connecting with your audience" to "Staying hungry and Foolish. Thank you Gerd for your Superb Analysis of where Music is going! TC
Gerd Leonhard wanted to download the book while listening. But did you know that the link does´t open in a new window? quite irritating... Anyways Thank you!
"The only things that matter are the cloud and the crowd," "Attention is the new currency," and "people pay for experiences." These are my 3 favorite takeaways from this vid. #GaryReidMusic
The answer today is even more valid than 5 yrs ago when this was made. The more platforms that you are on with mobile apps, the more ad revenue that you generate. To monetize is to advertise. This while collating user data and directing your fan or client base to exclusive live content or merch. 1000 true fans or followers can feed your family!
there's nothing that can replace Vinyl, bringing a book somewhere to read without a device attached to you, or wall writings. There is no replacement for a hand-written letter or a live performance with instruments & life is great once you let the cell phone go. :)
So true. We have to work together to go anywhere. Just think. If ten of us each having 1000 customers got together to cross promote, collaborate and network. All ten of us Would get approximately 10,000 customers.
Hi Gerd, I am a big fan of your work and ideas, and started following your twitter and TH-cam. Thanks for sharing this astounding and thought provoking presentation. Very inspiring and I think you are on the cutting edge of the future! Cheers, Geoff Peters, Vancouver Canada.
Im.going read the book like king for insigth on indie artist adapting to these plarforms. Love ypur work #gerd im a indie music artist and video producer fron central america honduras in the caribeans.
This is exactly the same as software standardization in the software and telecom industries 20-25 years ago. Stakeholders have conflicting agendas in emerging markets where process is not defined. Often they have an incentive NOT to standardize because they are making money out of the chaos. I still think that one strong stakeholder needs to take a strong leadership role to bring others together drive standardization. This was Microsoft with Windows, Apple more recently with iTunes.
This ties directly into some the internet initiatives that have been considered over the last few years by the FCC. The service providers are attempting to create subscription structured offerings to content, placing themselves between the user and web content. They want the to be the gate keeper, not only with regard to access but with regard to access to specific content. Who knows how this will play out? Music distribution is especially complicated because the entire industry to this point was already based on very complicated relationships between artists (content) and listeners (users). From the artists perspective there still no solid web based delivery system that incorporates all of the critical operatives of the old system or provide the level of reward (money) or the marketing and distribution services that the labels provide/d. I'm sure there are circumstantial exceptions, but generally speaking this holds true. On the flip side, the record labels have killed creativity. They are convinced that it is in their best interests to invest resources exclusively into lowest common denominator (radio circulation), thereby creating walls to artist access via that old established channel. For its part radio followed the lead of the labels and has become a dumping ground of average... which takes its instructions from a database. Nobody I know if happy with radio,. the record labels, the music industry at large or the music that it produces. So, the change will come soon but the parameters of that change are still being established.
First than all thanks Gerd for your quick respond. And Gerd I also support the the content have to be spread, but what I mean is that your conference at the MIDEM couldn't be copied, not this video itself. And continuing with the words of Kevin Kelly "when copies are free we need to sell something that can't be copy"and the conference are part of that "something" no? Of course the networking of MIDEM it's something you can't copy. Cheers!
Basically the large internet and network companies are the new middle-men. They however are not willing to talk to independents. It is still a win win for them and a flat out screwing of the original content creators.
Gerd thanks for sharing this with us, very value information. I really support a lot of your ideas, but in this sense I ask my self, why MIDEN a very expensive conference, gives away so precious content that like in this case can't be copy. (Lucky us) Best regards! Ángel @AngelNavas85
Hmmm.... I have mixed feelings on the video. I was very concerned when you missed the point that I believe the guy was making which was... How do you talk to facebook when facebook only talks to other larger companies and does not talk to us indie artists? So much of this video seemed to be about how we as content creators must give our work away for free and be willing to collaborate with the telecommunications companies, but not much was about how to get the telecommunication companies to talk to us beyond them saying...Hey! Content creator! We want your content for free so we can get paid, but if you want to push your own content, you have to be a paid advertiser. In that scenario, it is a win-win for the telecom companies. I went ahead and watched the whole video, but for the most part, I am ticked off at me as this is time that I can't get back... In either case, it is what it is... If you read my post, then you can save yourself some time and not watch the video as there is no value add in this particular video.
+mnash3 A very astute observation which goes beyond music and applies to all content and the Internet in general. Telecom companies, streaming services and social media platforms all get paid (and big) either way. It's the new 'middle man'.
It seems to me like Spotify could have the potential to really take the artist's needs into account (as well as the consumers). Lets say if Spotify had an optional (and possibly even expensive) mastering service or partnership with mastering studios, would that help it further in becoming a primary platform for artists/publishers to approach (above the likes of Google Play)?
Hey everyone, the best info that i've ever had was with the Fergs Treatment Crusher (just google it) - I found it the most useful idea that I've tried.
Why do you want people's face permanently stuck to a screen ? Physical copies are better because if you break it , you have to buy another ? The internet is chewing up humanity .

Are spotify making their own content yet like netflix has done?
not yet but seems like a possible path:::
cool. I need money to master my songs. patreon.com looks like a good option too.
