  • Here we have a Facebook Marketplace purchase. It is an Atlas N scale EMD GP40-2 in CSX colors. I picked this unit up from a seller who wasn't very knowledgeable about model railroading and had inherited it from his grandfather. As such I had to go by what was in the pictures.
In this video we'll go over some steps to troubleshoot and repair if you get a used DCC locomotive and it doesn't work when it arrives.

I have a few of the same vintage Atlas GP40-2's and even though the boxes say they have Digitrax decoders, they are actually Lenz LEO63XF decoders (part number 447299). That's what I have it set to in JMRI and I'm able to program it no problem. Your board look identical to mine, so I'm confused, lol. Perhaps my decoders got swapped out at some point.

Could be. I'll have to see if there are any identifying markings on the decoder. I know at one point Atlas has used Lenz, Digitrax, and NCE decoders for their non-sound units. So could be anything, lol. Could look up the decoder manufacturer ID (that the power cab said) and find out.
Edit: I looked on the NMRA website and 129 does indeed belong to Digitrax

I have a similar problem, but with an older Kato N scale SD40 with a decoder, and since it's some kind of aftermarket decoder with a rats nest of wires running off of it, I want to switch it back to DC. (I don't do DCC, so I don't have a way to program it for DC use, so I would like to go back to original DC.
What would you suggest? I can't find the original light board to fit it, not even through Kato.

Without looking at it it’s hard to tell. If it has a decoder that is wired in that means that the motor was probably electrically isolated to accommodate that. It might be able to run without a light board but it depends 100% on The install and how old that particular unit is. Do you have the original box? What is the model number if you do.

@@Trains-With-Shane it's one of the older 90s Kato SD40. One of the blue box 176 prefix. The chassis looks a little different than the ones normally used on those.

@@michaelmorgan7893if the suffix is 3 digit as well like 176-209 or 176-20e then it's indeed very old. That mechanism would have to be electrically isolated in order to get a DCC setup to work. So could potentially be a pain in the butt to convert back. That is assuming that the modifications are actually reversable without extra parts. If it's the kind im thinking about then the light board or boards plural, aren't required for the locomotive to work on DC in the original configuration.

@@Trains-With-Shane I figured it might be. So once I get power back on to my workshop, I may have to desolder those five or six wires and mini resistors and try to hard wire it back to DC, or purchase another motor for it that still has the little wiper tabs.

@@michaelmorgan7893probably, yes. Hopefully the contacts on the motor weren't cut rather just soldered to and taped off appropriately.
