When some people say that “yuri is basically the opposite gender version of yaoi”, strawberry panic is the show that they’re talking about. Obviously this doesn’t represent the whole genre but the amount of times this show made me facepalm, groan and roll my eyes is unreal
3:00 That chalkboard is for the class's messages, as most schools in japan makes their teacher changes classroom instead of students; they used it for keeping track of school's events, whose in charge of clean duty, homework sheet time to handover etc. Is just really a public services chalckboard for students. Thanks for you review and reactions! Is so rare nowdays to find some doing it for an old anime. And yes! Strawberry Panic was a Hit or Miss even back in the 2000's and a show that tried to bring fans of "Mariasama wo miteru" on (another anime with all girls catholic school setting but without the AS attemptes on it). Also, you can put that count over the screen for each time it happens so we can follow along and expect the next one XD. #Justiceforhikari
Ohhh!!! Thanks for the insight on the chalkboard that makes a lot of sense! No problem, and I’m glad you enjoyed them, I’ve been meaning to get to this one for a while (I think it’s been on my watchlist for a few years at least) And that’s a great idea for having the counter on screen I really should have lol, thanks for the feedback :)
I kept seeing random out of context clips from this anime and got curious so I watched it. This was so addicting but also infuriating because of certain characters. I’m sure you know who they are. Ending was so-so for me.
If this vid gets 20 likes I'll post all my attempts to make that dance in the middle. I had too much fun with it and ended up doing 4 dance numbers, so may as well not just throw the content away lol
OMG thank you so much for covering this!! you unlocked a deep buried memory. i remember watching this wow what a fever dream. This show def leaves you with this weird nostalgic sexual ominous tension lmfao. well done video you are hilarious
Here's my review. I guess I'd be in the target audience because I'm a queer woman, and I'm around the same age range as the oldest characters. First of all, it's not believable in the slightest that literally every single girl in this Catholic school is queer. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I wish there were at least some straight characters. Like there’s no way in hell there are just this many queer girls in one school, let alone a religious one. Next, from a romance aspect, this show is very bad. Not in the sense that it’s unrealistic, but in the sense that it’s just sickening. Every romantic relationship in the show, aside from Amane and Hikari’s, is extremely toxic, in the sense that they’re all very reminiscent to grooming or extremely abusive. If anyone thinks that the romance in this show is wholesome or satisfactory, then that is a huge red flag, and honestly, stay away from them. Not to mention how the countless instances of s*xual assault and the 2 occasions of attempted r**e on Hikari are seemingly used for fanservice. Disgusting... However, as I got further along in the show, I was very invested because from a psychological aspect, it’s very intriguing. Being a survivor of grooming, s*xual assault, and attempted r**e myself, it was a reassurance to know I wasn’t alone in these traumatic experiences and the aftereffects that they had on me. The way that Nagisa was just completely unable to recognize the several red flags that Shizuma had because she was so incredibly enamored by her is very relatable to me. Nearly every time she spent time with Shizuma, she left the encounter feeling depressed. When Shizuma s*xually assaulted her and pinned her down on the bed, she was terrified, close to being in tears, and was just unable to process what happened afterwards. Yet despite these horrible feelings Nagisa harbored, she still constantly went running back to Shizuma anyways. It's this vicious cycle of being made to feel inferior and worthless by your groomer, but they say repeatedly how much they love you, so you become dependent on them and very easy to manipulate. This is exactly what happened to me when I was younger. I was being used as the object of a sick man's pleasures but I couldn't see it because I was so desperate for his validation. It wasn't until I learned to love myself that I was able to get away with him, because self-love made me realize that his behaviors were not loving at all. I also like Yaya. What she did in episode 13 was disturbing, so I'm not here to justify her behavior. To see your best friend nearly get r**ed and then to s*xually assault her on the same day is just... Sickening. However, the reason I still like Yaya (as a character, not as a person), is because I've been in her shoes. When you're so desperate to be loved, you completely lose yourself, and do things to people you regret. Yaya clearly shows remorse for what she did, immediately after, upon seeing Hikari's fear, and still shows remorse later on in the series. She knows what she did was wrong, which I appreciate. It doesn't make it any better, but her living in constant regret shows that she won't do such a thing ever again. I also appreciate how later on it's shown that Hikari is still afraid of Yaya. When Yaya got close to her to show her a lyric in their choir book, Hikari backed away and tensed up in fear, which is an extremely real trauma response that I've experienced myself. Unlike a lot of anime where s*xual assault and r**e is just seemingly forgotten about instantly by the victims, in this show I appreciate that it shows the detrimental effects it really has on a person... Because it's scarring for life. I also like how Yaya didn’t fight Hikari towards the end of the show for having feelings for Amane, which goes to show she really does care about her happiness. I think Yaya had good character growth. I also find Shizuma's behavior particularly interesting, as we find out why she acts the way she does. Again, in no way am I trying to justify her actions. I really hate the relationship between her and Nagisa because I feel like she groomed Nagisa, and that's made clear right from the beginning, with her countless nonconsensual physical advances onto her. However, we find out later on that she wasn't always like this, and the reason she started acting this way was because of the loss of her first love, Kaori. So the reason Shizuma is a hoe is because she's so desperately trying to find a replacement for Kaori because Kaori was her other half and now she just feels completely empty without her. Shizuma is so desperate to find another Kaori that she just doesn't care how many people she has to exploit in order to do so. Also, I can't express my disdain for those two monsters in the St. Spica student council enough. If they died I would celebrate. Anyways, I guess I like shows with morally gray characters because they're more human than most fictional characters that are either a black and white of good or evil. These characters are all very real. People are evil, and the kinds of things that happen in this show are unfortunately very real scenarios. That being said, overall, I didn't enjoy watching this series. I enjoyed the trail of deep thinking it took me on. I mean, it was very captivating, because of how much I can relate to the trauma that each character has, but seriously, it's such a dark and heavy show and brought back a lot of memories for me that I've tried so hard to forget over the years.
