The Runescape "Rich Man Mindset" (OSRS)

  • I use a line with my buddies in my discord “the rich man mindset”, you either have it or you don’t. Whenever someone is using lower tier ammos than they should be using, uncharging their scythe for their gargoyles task, doing an herb run with a 2b+ bank, heading to the GE between raids because they’re out of ppots, and they end up only buying 50, they lack “the rich man mindset”. It doesn’t come from your bank value, but from your state of mind. Guzzling sanfews, gobbling sweets, dumping a hail of dragon darts on your foes, nothing is stopping you from doing this. As a player who worked up to almost an 8b bank from scratch, I’ve made many a dumb mistake with the way I’ve managed my growing bank. Get ready to acquire some knawledge, as we journey to learn what the “rich man mindset” is, what the common pitfalls people fall into are, and how to pull yourself towards a higher bank value.

How are you getting those numbers for sepulchre? Looting the grand coffin under 7mins gets you about 2mil/hr vs all chests from 4 and 5 in 10mins getting you 3mil/hr. That's an opportunity cost of 1 mil isn't it??

dude i havent had a video speak to me like this one. lol im doing exactly what u say, i already have 99 farming and tangleroot and first thing i do when i log on is quick herbrun and birdhouses and buy battlestaffs and after that ive been on a Vorkath grind for a couple weeks now and it never even crossed my mind that the time i spent doing my herbs i could get more money at vorkath and more kills which equals higher pet chance and visage drops... i know ppl will say "well duh" but its just habit, ive been doing the login herbrun for a long time on way to 99 and i guess i never broke the habit and never thought of it as a loss of money.

@@darton_ you would train agility on hallowed sepulchre regardless, so the opportunity cost doesnt factor in the runtime of getting from f1 to grand coffin, but rather the time you spend going out of your way to grapple/build a bridge/ light torches or use a spell to get to an extra coffin. so basicly: looting vs no looting F4+5. and looting is so incredibly good that you should defenetly do it even with the "RMM"

Agree with doing whatever you enjoy, but nothing in this vid is hyper efficient. All it depends on is being able to do mid to late game pvm. The irony is, doing cheap methods takes longer overall so if you're going to burnout- it'll be during these methods.

The efficiency mindset is also what makes a lot of people on this game toxic.
I remember sitting at the GE talking to a friend on discord when a guy came up to me and told me “yo, you should sell ur bandos”. When I asked why, he said “get prims and torso it’s better than dboots and bandos”. I told him thanks but I didn’t care about that and he said “I’m just trying to help you be better at the game instead of looking like an idiot. But I guess nothing can help with that” and he walked away
Efficiency mindsets kill games. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to be efficient, but when it becomes the dominating mindset everyone just gets burnt out and the people who don’t want to be efficient have to deal with toxicity

@@apophis456 the odd thing is it's just a mindset thing, like you're probably going to be having more fun using dragon enchanted bolts at vork instead of trying to penny pinch using adamant bolts. The kills will be faster and you get to see bigger numbers (which really is the definition of fun in this game ngl), but also it's the optimal strat so you get to spend time at the other fun content sooner.

I didn't have to do certain pieces of content because I had other efficient gp/h methods. Why kill wildy bosses? You get ragged and it's worse gp than vorkath. Why kill zulrah? Vorkath is better.
That's why I made an iron. Now I have to explore the entire game to get the items I need instead of following the best gp/h. I need to get a dpick in the wild despite it's 1 hour of vorkath on a main. Now I need to learn zulrah because I need her weapons.

pure moneymaking to me is like one of the most boring things i could do in osrs. i would just burn out if i had to spam vork mindlessly to justify doing faster training methods. the "rich man mindset" often isnt aplicable if you factor in fun into the game
    EDIT:
vorkath is obviously just an example, i have max melee and absolutly hate slayer. so i might as well do hydra or cg. i could also learn to do raids. my clan occasionaly does stuff like corp events.... all of this is basicly just pure moneymaking and im just not interested in it. all i wanna do is max out my account and do collection log content post max and that results in me doing magic longs for fletching atm instead of some sweaty ddarts while doing agility for example because this would be terribly unfun to me.
dont get pinpointed at the exact wording/methods of my comment but rather the concept
to get an idea on how i play my account: i got my achievment diary cape before any 99 i think (maybe str/hp combats) - while i use mostly efficient methods, nobody needs to tell me that this wasnt the proper way to train slayer and i sure as hell did most my skilling in a way that granted me money instead of losing if possible. while im in most highscores my highest non slayer boss is like 150 vork (only because i acually did a task there) or something from combat achievments.
for a very long time my account was poor af (i use gp for all my bonds since day 1) but im still like 2/3 to 1b without a rich mans mindset that does a lot of moneymakers

You can easily fit one in during your lunch or a smoke break at work. That's an extra 1.2M a week (Assuming 5 days a week and only do runs on your break) with more if you can fit more in throughout the day.
I was able to fit like 4-5 runs a day at my last job (During my commute to work and back home. Then unpaid lunch break, and I also got 2 more paid breaks throughout the day). My cash stack just slowly grew up over weeks and weeks.

  • @JamesDoesItAll

something that goes along with this thoughtset is sunken cost vs total cost,
if it will cost you 5gp/xp to do prayer potions but 6 or even 7 gp/xp to do super attack potions (slightly faster xp too) but total cost to buy those ranarr unf pots will take up a good portion of your bank to where the super attack pots are relatively cheap to buy out. Go with the second it gives you wiggle room to do other things if you're burnt out of that skill to go do a money maker or something else, rather having all your money tied up in that unf pots.
I mean i know it's not exactly on the same mindset, but it bothers me when people make the purchase to buy out a buyable to x lvl (or even straight to 99) then sell it back to buy gear.
But overall you're right. if you have the funds, and the means and the capability to make back the gp in the time saved, always go with the faster method.

Your con example is perfect. Mahogany planks get 1m xp/hr. Oak only caps out at like 550k xp/hr. I like to even consider the "physical stress save" as important, as construction is very click intensive and the less time you do that the better for your body.

This is ofcourse unless the content is impossible w/o them, CA speed tasks, but any other grind like pets, opportunity costs even show youre better off using next best alternatives.
The value of money decreases as you buy more upgradess. This is only worth doing if you no longer have any more significant gear upgrades to go for, which really means your money has smaller value. It is only useful for getting even more supplies, that is it.

Some people aren’t able to commit that much time to a video game and/or are not going to grind their efficient boss for hours and hours to make up for the cost. Just my two cents. This mindset makes more sense when applied IRL, not towards a hobby.

Reminder to anyone that hasn't already figured it out, but the message of the video doesn't apply to 95% of players. People who are in this position have the luxury of time that most don't. Why do herb runs when you can grind vorkath for an hour straight? Well, for me (and a majority of others I'd be willing to bet) I have the gear to do vorkath (full bandos dhl faceguard etc etc) but I only have the time to log in for 5-10 min on mobile at work and do an herb run, believe me I tried bossing at work and getting interrupted by a co worker while trying to do corrupted gauntlet is fairly tilting. Sure when I'm home relaxing I could send an hour of vorkath and sometimes I do, but herb runs over an 8 hour work day is much more feasible while still slowly making me money, it ain't much but its honest work.

One thing one also may have to factor in is the human factor.
Sure, vorkath is better than herb runs, without a doubt, and sure, spending twice the amount on construction to get it done twice is fast is time saved. However, not everyone wishes to rush everything, or do the same thing for hours on end instead of doing more varied stuff. In the end, RuneScape is a game with a lot of content. Doing only one or two things limits you and makes you burn out from the game so so much faster. I see it often with friends or clan members ending up doing literally nothing else but cox or tob because of the drops being good, but also then getting bored so much faster cause doing the same 1-3 things can make the game feel like a chore rather than a way of relaxation and fun.
You can play the game for efficiency sure, some like it that way, keeps the brain busy. Some however, prefer saving a few gp to then have an extra prayer pot maybe, or doing something more chill, that is slower to simply disconnect a bit more with the daily life and relax more. I vary in both ways, but prefer relaxing with maybe some non tick efficient iron mining over 3 tick sandstone.
Your video proves some good points though, hell, I even caught myself thinking "oh yeah" a time or two, so definetly a well made video !

When do I stop and just start raids with worse gear? or do I always keep going until you get it before moving onto content. thank you for your time id really appreciate hearing your thoughts

    • @ainmosni22
      @ainmosni22 2 ปีที่แล้ว

"Opportunity cost" is the number of hours spent times some number of quantitative goals achieved you could have expected in that hour by doing something else, but it depends on if these other goals are comparable or a replacement for the goal you are comparing them to.
If getting a lance is something you are 100% going to do, and have set your mind on it, the opportunity cost is zero. You need the lance, RuneScape RNG often works in the long term. Someone might look at the hours spent getting a lance and not consider that when they got lucky on some pet (for example), they've just "saved" themselves over 100 hours of gameplay. Over time, these dry/lucky events WILL average out for the vast majority of players, and with enough time played, the RNG for every player should be about the same, when not looking at individual grinds but taken as a whole. It could take years to see this, however.
Opportunity cost can be hard to grasp, but think about it like this- if you're trying to achieve a goal, and are using the most efficient method that you are able to do (not the most efficient method possible, just the most efficient method given whatever circumstances you are in- such as afking when you're busy irl), then there is NO opportunity cost. There are a million ways to make gp, only one way to get a lance on an iron.
In your case, opportunity cost would only apply if you can achieve the same thing you were hoping to achieve with a dragon Hunter Lance with something else, being either some other item or spending more hours to complete some grind you would use the Lance for with less efficient gear. But this would only take into account the hours expected to get a lance, not the number of hours you've already sunk into it.
Opportunity cost is not a question of bad rng, it's a question of whether or not you're spending your time wisely in a big picture sense.

I mostly just afk fish so stopping that to make 250k is bad, considering I have enough money to make 250k on a single flip easily and that is like 1 minute of work, just gotta tele to ge, think about what item, check if the prices are good and go for it, of course it doesn't always work, some days that flip will be 50k profit some weird days like 1mil, but if you choose good items the prices of normally very very stable so even if you dump the stock at a loss you lose at most like 500k, but could probably just hold onto it for a couple days if you have the capital to be back to net zero, but alot of flipping does feel like that time cost.
Every item can easily make money, but which ones are the best? because you can only have 8 offers in.
Even just the method of flip do you buy and sell at the same time? do you buy then sell, do you lowball or go for slightly below market to increase your chances of getting the item, what margins do you want.
Insanely fun, but bit of a headache for a minmaxer, I just stopped checking how much money I am making most of the time, too much numbers to calculate, just need to know am I profiting and roughly how much.

I just do farm, birdhouse runs and thieve master farmers afk. I’m very close to max and don’t have much cash left until I finish off the last 5m of slayer. I did 99 mining and 99 slayer at the same time, which burnt me out but made me really happy that I could accomplish the grind.

It's almost impossible to "pass along" the rich man mindset. I've tried countless times (both in real life and in osrs, it's all the same really) but they always give 50 excuses, one of the most common, recurring ones being "Oh you can do that because you have money already" when it's actually that I have money BECAUSE of my behavior, and all they're seeing is the same behavior I had when poor play out when I have reached wealth. The behavior doesn't change whether I'm poor or flush, the only difference is the magnitude of my spending from and outsider's perspective, but if you measure it relative to the wealth I had at the time, it's all pretty much equal. A funny thing about this is I've been able to pass people who made way more money than me in real life while earning much less, yet managing my wealth so well that I surpass them, and ALL THE WHILE this is happening, they think I'm spending too much money on tools or this or that and they're always saying how broke they are that they can't go out or pay for x or y thing. It baffles me the fact that they can't see that the problem ain't the funds, it's the management, even when they see living breathing examples of a different strategy that they critique playing out well (IE: my too much spending on tools that help me make more money faster and easier, etc). They still keep their poor tactics and wonder how I'm doing better... after having not only heard the detailed explanation from me, but seen it play out and work. They all think they're unlucky and I'm just somehow lucky. Really, the cognitive dissonance and lack of self analysis are baffling to me. I really wonder how it is they see things. There's no convincing them either, you're always wrong even if you're right and you can prove it. They'll have an excuse for it or some sort of exception that makes it not apply to them somehow.

Yeah, but I feel like playing the game based on EVPH (Efficient Vorkath's Per Hour) or some variation is a fast way to burn out. Really, most of the money someone makes will probably be post max when they don't need to dump 500m+ into maxing. At that point, your bank will just naturally grow if you're playing reasonably and not spending money on buyables for post 99 exp. I think this mindset is fine, but not for like, 90% of people. I feel like most would just grow to resent the game. I know I would.

The thing I dislike about this mentality is that is reduces the game down to grinding out the best money making method rather than just enjoying the game as you go. Me doing herb runs after 99 is simply that I have a ton of seeds and don't take long to run

I can understand switching up to better gear to get more kills that part is fine but saying hey don't do herb runs because you make more money at vork is a poor way to look at it I use herb runs as a break from grinding out things like vork I don't do it for profit I keep the herbs

I tryed making a iron man, a pker, and a dfs pure. All of which are collecting dust. The ironman i started playing for 2 or 3 days got so bored of doing weird stupid shit just to get a rune scimitar. And countless clues for staff. I ended up not logging bk into osrs for close to 15 months. For me efficient gp scape is the only way i enjoy my time on osrs. If im not making 5-150m per day on osrs what am i logged in for? I cannot stand skilling. I just avoid it at all costs. There a ton of quests i havent done and my account is near 7 years old. I cant stand doing quests because most of the meaningless itens cost gold and youll never yse them again. Also it takes away from my raiding time. I logg in to do toa and cox. I love the thrill of seeing purple lights. Purple flames. Skilling genuinely makes me logg out. And when it comes to infernal why wouldnt i just buy it while im at work? Seriously lol. Im not going to learn infernal cape boss just for a stupid cape. These guys spend hours in there. No thanks i got coins. Why even be logged in for a single second doing something u dont want to do? Questing? 🤮 Skilling?🤢making mills at toa and cox? 😎🍻😀❤️

Saying that with the saved time you can go do your best money maker doesn't really work for me, my best consistent money is Vork, getting about 3m an hour, but the amount of extra attention I have to put into Vork compared with basically anything else I do means that time spent killing Vork is WAY more work than any skilling I do, so if I can save more than about ~1.5m for every extra hour I'll take that instead since my low effort money makers make about that. This video simply doesnt account for the fact that most peoples best money maker is also one of their highest intensity tasks, which makes a massive difference if you're just wanting to have fun gradually seeing your account improve. I do agree though seeing people with Scythes and Tbows penny pinching is hilarious

He was a rich man but he messed up lots of stuff due greed. Like not calling a handyman for the job. He tried to fix electrical issues himself with help of youtube videos...
Long story short He fixed it temporarily though the method was not safe the building went up in flames at night and he lost his shop.
And 5 others lost their jobs. And the job actually required more than 5 people and we kinda were happy this happened lol.

It's not max gear, but I still do herb runs with a 500M bank (basically bowfa(c)/crystal and fang+bandos) because I'm camping ToA and CG. I might do 2-3 raids per night or 1 hr of CG. If I go dry at least my supplies are covered. I don't do them every hour but when I log off I'll do a run and bring extra seeds for another two runs for when I log back on.

I actually think the complete opposite. I don’t get why people constantly have to metricise everything in how long it would be in Vorkath hours. Skipping fun engaging content (because it’s less profitable then grinding the money meta) to get out of the mid game is mind numbingly boring and will ultimately lead to burnout.
From my experience I tried to find a number of different passive, casual money makers and alternate between them (farming contracts, herb runs, birdhouses, cooking). It was a little bit of an ironman mindset to be honest. On paper it wasn’t at all efficient but small profitable activities over a long period of time massively increased my bank in the mid game. Now I have a big enough bank to do play the game in the most fun way (using dragon darts, blood fury etc with max gear). Doing these semi passive money makers consistently and avoiding burnout is the rich man mentality IMO.

Its weird to me because doing inneficient things or casually (except skilling like mining for example it can go fuck itself) i get more burnt out than doing it efficiently.
I tried farm runs alongside bosses but after two runs I got bored and just farmed the boss instead. In that time of the farm run I could have killed two muspahs for the same gp.

It’s really all about mindset, I’ve been rich and poor, would have about 7b with no staking but I legit just fuck around when I play. I waste money on stupid shit because I can, and I make a lot of gp just shooting shit with friends in voice chat. Really comes with skill and time played. I do all my things as fast as possible cause I’ll make the gp through tob and Nex. It’s never a grind cause it’s passive while I bs with friends.

I feel like going by this mindset in sessions would just scare players away, and make it not as much enjoyable. This is at least from what I'd assume a new player would think. Just play the game how you want to play it, and have fun. If this method is how you have fun, awesome! I just don't believe everyone needs to have a rich man mindset. I play on my level 126 acc, and often get annoyed by how players at my level act at raids, nex, and even just godwars. It's never relaxed, and never just having fun, it's all "why aren't you doing this, that's not perfect" and personally, I get quickly burnt out from the experience. I just want to have fun lol and crave people who can game somewhat high level, and still be laid back.

Rich man mindset would be working for $15 an hour at a normal ass entry job and RWT that for 45m/h.
Level up to an entry level stem position you lookin at minimum $18-25/hr which is 60m-75m/h. Getting into an entry dev position you lookin at $25-40/h which is 75M-105M/h.
Then you get banned for RWT and quit runescape for good. The real RMM.

Embracing this mindset in an opportunity cost where you seek to replace a miserable grind is nice, such as saving time with doors vs tables. But I think that's where it needs to end because extending this mindset encroaches on to a point where doing anything that is less than optimal is bad. For example, lots of people enjoy farm runs regardless of if its optimal gp/hr. There is nothing wrong with doing herb runs at 200m farming xp with a 20b bank. If it's fun to do, they should do it. Doing it doesn't mean you aren't embracing the rich man mindset, it means you're embracing a fun mindset. For example, I'd rather do any # of Cox even if Nex is available because I find Cox infinitely more enjoyable. I don't care if it's not the highest gp/hr and I finished the log, I do it because it's fun, even if it provides marginal progression compared to Nex. There is no greater thief of joy and greater source of burnout than seeking hyper efficiency.

Ironically the opportunity cost of playing thousands of hours of Runescape versus doing something else with our lives... well it's pretty astounding.
For most people who play this much I'd think that what we do on RS is fairly meaningless compared to the hours that could be better spent on health, hygiene, diet, exercise, sleep, career, friends, and family.
I'd definitely consider myself addicted and that I'd be better off playing less. Obsessing over getting the most value out of efficient play would further degrade my mental health.
It's important to keep the bigger picture in mind. RS isn't everything.
