Iron Menace Review, Dorney Park New-for-2024 Coaster | Northeast's First B&M Dive Coaster

- Iron Menace is the new-for-2024 roller coaster at Dorney Park. This is a Bolliger & Mabillard (B&M) dive machine, the first ride of its kind in the northeast. This coaster features a beyond vertical plunge at the start and 4 consecutive inversions. And the park gave it a cool backstory to a haunted steel mill.

While this ride is undeniably shaky, and it’s unacceptable that B&M delivered a product of this quality, the ride is really awesome and my favorite dive. Its pacing and forces make up for any shakiness it has. I hate how slow the big dives that I’ve done (Griffon and sheikra) are, so it’s nice that this ride type has a fast paced version. Additionally I don’t think the vests detract from the ride at all, they’re super comfortable and additionally don’t inhibit the airtime for me. All and all, a super solid addition even if B&Ms lack of quality control is quite disheartening.
W review
B&M needs to get their 💩 together with quality control otherwise they're gonna lose a lot of business & money
@@maverickheartlinerollFr, like what happened? They used to be the goats of quality
@thebabbynick1543 idk but it makes me sad and mad, if it keeps up they might even go bankrupt. I think it's Clermont steel fab's fault so either b&m needs to contract someone new or Clermont needs to get their head out of the clouds
@@maverickheartlineroll here’s another thought to kick around, could it maybe be the installation company?
I have been on Iron Menace and I honestly think it’s a great coaster and was a great addition to Dorney Park Dorney Park is my home amusement park so I was really excited when this coaster was announced
I'm glad the theme park got something substantial.
Baron 1898 isn't the only other dive to go right into the drop. Flying Asparas In Western Region is another. It's located in China. Also happens to be the only other one I've ridden.
Thanks, didn't realize that one did it too.
I really wanted to like this roller coaster, but unfortunately it just sorta gave me a headache. I can handle rough rides, like The Boss, but on roller coasters where my legs are free or standing - they have to be really smooth for me to enjoy. Otherwise, it is hard for me to enjoy the forces. I had some enjoyment, but it was short and a lot rougher than I expected. I am happy investment is being put into Dorney Park. the next step for this park is to firmly minimize the trims on Steel Force. Give it the Mamba treatment. Steel Force/Talon/DemonDrop are still the top three rides at this park for me. I really hope B&M can address this current issue with their new installations
I wanted to like it too, but then I saw the layout and realized they totally mailed it in just so they could tout their new claim to fame. It’s a joke of a ride, even by dive coaster standards
Thankfully it didn't give me a headache, but it does rattle.
Babe wake up, Canobie Coaster dropped his Iron Menace Review.
Also smart timing since Great America is making their announcement tomorrow and it’s pointing towards a Dive Coaster.
Enjoy the review! Coincidental when this came out.
Thank you canobie coaster for always giving metric units! You’re the best
No problem!
i really hope b&m starts making their new coasters smoother. they seem to all have rattles
@@rollercoaster_nick3448 10 years ago if you said that people would think your insane
Yeah what in the world has happened to B&M recently? Their rides used to be absolutely synonymous with glassy smoothness, but now every new B&M has a rattle or giant pothole somewhere. It's very strange and discouraging.
@@halo364 ikr they seriously need to work out this roughness problem because i feel like it makes parks more cautious when thinking about buying one of their models. i’ve even heard penguin trek has a rattle
Yeah I think ever since like Orion, so like 2020. After like Yukon Striker, things started to go downhill which sucks because B&M coasters are my favourite type of roller coasters out there. I've seen a POV of Phoenix Rising and that seems to be very smooth, so at least they got that right.
@@TonyKimtheamusementparkfan i’ve actually heard that phoenix rising also unfortunately has a rattle which is definitely sad to hear. i’m sure it’s not bad but it’s still not good for b&m’s standards
I rode this mid July and the first half was buttery smooth but then halfway thru the zero G roll the shake begins and is insanely noticeable. It’s brand new and a B&M, it makes no sense.
It's unfortunate it isn't as smooth as the older dives.
Imagine telling enthusiasts in the early 2000s that now B&M makes the roughest steel coasters and Vekoma makes the smoothest. Idk if anyone could believe it.
B&m making the roughest is really an overstatement, but it's good to use for dramatic effect. Realistically id say gerstlauer makes the roughest steel coasters.
@@nsvstheworld yeah that is true. It’s just shocking to see B&M have such a decline in quality nowadays and are definitely some of the toughest new steel coasters.
@@First-Drop-Studios It is not a decline but the parks being lazy, all B&M's come with a rattle but it is up to the park to deal with it when B&M is on site. Example is Mako, you can kind of see the train shaking a little bit on the first test run but that was not the case when it opened. However I do think this was simply a mistake as this where this happened is where the track was connected from beginning to end.
@@typicaluser4116 well it would just make sense for them to be declining in quality because the past 4 parks that have gotten one all have rattles.
I know, right?
Nothing beats your content. Amazing video as always
Thanks!
Emperor, Iron Menace, now Wrath of Rakshasa… feels like we are in the era of MCBR-less dives and I am here for it!
I'm mixed. The ones with MCBRs have the extra vertical drop, but the pacing isn't as good.
Appreciate the closed captions anytime. 👍
You're welcome
The J😅LT!
I was literally anticipating this review so bad. I needed to know what was up with that jolt.
Enjoy!
Should have been called "JOLT" 😂
That jolt right before the brake run is brutal and uncharacteristic of B&M
Fantastic! Can't wait to get the credit
Have fun!
Definitely a fan over our realistic POVs instead of those mounted ones, but you’re right: a fast paced well needed dive coaster 🥃
I love this ride's pacing.
This ride seems like a bigger version of Baron 1898
I prefer Baron for the theming and smoothness.
Funny seeing that Banshee is your least favorite of the inverts...
I rode Banshee a couple weeks before Iron Menace, and it's my second favorite invert, and I've been on most custom inverts in this country. Menace I found to ride more like Banshee than other B&M rides, and of the dive machines I've been on (the other 3 are standard gauge), it's my favorite by an extremely slim margin.
Griffon is my second favorite, and I like how both experiences are so different from each other. Menace makes sacrifices in stats and build quality to improve pacing, inversion count, and thematic value. If you like Banshee, higher chance you'll enjoy Menace.
I had a lot of fun with Iron Menace. I got 5 rides, and only one I got a headache on one of them, 4 of my rides were on outer seats, and I expected not to like it. However , I was pleasantly surprised by it's tight layout and awesome theme. I have a bigger problem with its ride time than its roughness. #2 at Dorney.
Banshee in 2020 was way worse than Iron Menace. Banshee was good again in 2021 after I filmed that review.
1:09 LMAO that is a hilarious pendulum ride 😂
How so?
Hey there! My biggest dream is to meet a TH-cam coaster enthusiast (like you) so we can discuss our opinions between roller coasters and amusement parks. Unfortunately, the only way I see this happening is if I met you at a park near me. I'm from outside of Rochester, NY so I live 30 minutes from Seabreeze and I live 1 hour from Six Flags Darien Lake. I was just at Dorney this July and I could've had a chance to see you there. There is word that we could be visiting Hershey Park this coming Sunday. If I were to ever meet one like you, we could become coaster friends if we wanted to. Anyways, nice review!
Thanks! I don't schedule meet ups, but if you ever see me at a park, feel free to say hi.
On the day after this video was released, Six Flags Great America announced that they will get a new B&M dive coaster in 2025. Coincidence?
But as for the rumored Gravity Group shuttle coaster, I say they could still build it. The space near Steel Force where Dinosaurs Alive used to sit would work perfectly.
They very well could build a modern wood coaster back there.
Great video, however, you accidentally made a factual mistake. Iron Menace and Baron 1898 are not the only 2 dive coasters to not feature a turn between the end of the lift hill and the first drop. Flying Apsaras in Western Region at Happy Valley Chengdu also fits this distinction.
Thanks, didn't realize that one had it too.
Imagine installing two large floorless coasters from B&M near Connecticut, both with a zero-G roll. One would have a weak zero-G roll and the other would have a whippy zero-G roll. While both look similar, I think there are differences between the two. What do you think?
Canobie Coaster said: The whippy one pulls you quickly out of your seat. The weak one does not.
If I ask you, do you like both the weak one and the whippy one? What do you think?
What would you say, Canobie Coaster?
A) I like both.
B) The whippy one is slightly better, but both are fun.

Dr Diabolical tends to have a rattle. I rode in the back row edge seat and it gave me a decent headache. And I have a pretty good rough tolerance (I can ride X2 on an outside seat with no problem.) there is a decent jolt on the zero g roll as well. It reminds me of hangtimes corkscrew. So this isn’t the only dive with this problem.
I agree Dr. Diabolical can shake quite a bit in the back edge seats, but I thought Menace's rattle was more consistent and prevalent.
I really like Iron Menace a lot, it’s about on par with the Hydra for me, and I like it over Valravn. Dorney is one of my home parks, and it definitely needs an elite ride that’s good enough to keep me from going to great adventure more often. I hope it’s still possible in the near future despite getting Menace.
It's my 3rd favorite coaster there now.
I love the theming. It's an attractive-looking ride, especially the inclined loop, but Dive Coasters aren't my thing. I'll take a ride on Possssed and Demon Drop over this one any day.
I prefer this to Possessed.
It is really difficult to understand why B&M nowadays produces so many coasters that rattle/shake to a level of discomfort. They still are probably the most costly manufacturer. And that abrupt jolt does really look bad and I would assume this creates maintenance issues for the trains.
It’s not that bad on other rides. This ride was already underwhelming BEFORE the rattle
I am not sure what changed, but I hope it can be corrected.
I appreciate your objective feedback. I'm sure it's appreciated by manufacturers as well
Hopefully their next dive is even better.
You said: Usually I love these zero-G rolls. They're often floaty or whippy. But this one is weak.
The three look similar, but what are the differences between "floaty", "whippy", and "weak"? What do you think?
Floaty is when you hover above your seat. Whippy is when you're quickly pulled through it. Weak is lacking.
Here after Wrath of Rakshasa announcement
Rakshasa looks even better.
Silly question, does the inclined loop feel like you flip upside down? It looks like it is too tilted.
I've ridden Rougarou at Cedar Point which also has an inclined loop, and it didn't feel like an inversion to me
It’s not a real inversion. The park is just desperate to tout it as one and up the “inversion count” to make it seem like it’s more worth riding then it ever was to begin with
Sort of. It has a lot of Gs though.
How would you compare the zero-G roll on Iron Menace to the one on Kraken at SeaWorld Orlando? What do you think?
Kraken's is whippier and has better forces.
im so torn on this ride. on one hand, it is my home park, and I'm happy they got a new ride. on the other hand, every time I ride it, I come off more disappointed. It shouldn't be nearly as rattly as it is for a ride that's only been open for less than 5 months. The retheme to the overall area was much needed, but I still think a modern wooden coaster would've been a much better fit for this park
It is surprising how much it shakes for a new coaster, but I find it tolerable.
Iron Menace is literally three months old and it’s developed a rattle.
oh it hasn’t developed a rattle. its actually gotten BETTER over time. when the ride first opened the rattle was much worse than it is now
It sounds like it started with one.
@@CanobieCoaster iron menace was closed for about 4 days this weekend into this week and it seems smoother now so they might have done something during that time
It's sad that this has so many smoothness issues. I'm pissed bc dorney deserves better.
I'm pinning the blame on Clermont Steel Fabricators in ohio bc penguin trek and phoenix rising have slight vibrations too. So their track quality as a whole has gone to hell
Unrelated, I find it interesting how all 3 of dorney's b&ms feature both a zero g roll that rolls counterclockwise and a corkscrew that rotates clockwise
I'm not sure why this one is so shaky, but I hope it's fixed for future coasters.
I love this ride but I cannot ride it in the back because it’s so rough to the point where it’s uncomfortable 😊
Ouch! I found it tolerable thankfully. But it is the roughest dive.
SWSD is my home park and when Iron Menace was announced I thought it looked like Emperor, just drawn out instead of compressed - similar height, speed, and track length - and was kind of disappointed on behalf of Dorney for getting such a short ride time on their first coaster in so long. What do you think of the duration on these mini-dives?
I prefer Emperor for the smoothness and inversions. I think the length is fine.
I just hate that B&M decided to put vest restraints on their newer dive coasters. I just recently rode Valravn and Yukon Striker and there's barely any airtime on the drops when compared to Griffon and SheiKra. Also, I noticed they don't tilt you as far on the drops as Griffon and SheiKra. Is that true?
I'm not sure on the tilt, but I don't mind the vests since they have flex to them.
@@CanobieCoaster So, you just hold on to the vest the whole time?
Will the vest restraint get tighter like on x flight or do they have give?
X flight has locking vest that get tighter as the ride goes on
These have give. Only the old vests locked.
I thought it was a good ride. My key takeaways were that it was TTD short. It was fun, nothing special but man if it had an extended layout it wouldve been expentionally better.. I noticed the rattle but it honestly didnt bother me. Its not banshee bad..
It has enough elements for a dive for me.
I've been to dorney 12 times this summer( its my home park ) ive only rode Iron mence 5 times. For some reason I just don't like this coaster. its a little rough. but it just doesn't excite me as much as I had hoped. I prefer Talon and Hydra and Steele force.Iron menace ive only riden because a friend that that hast rode it but is kinda afraid of roller coasters wants some one to ride with them. My husband don't like it at all
It's my 3rd favorite coaster there.
this is actually my favorite dive tbh. yukon and valravn disappointed me. griffon and sheikra are good, emperor is good. but this kinda blew me away
I prefer the ones you named. I'm a sucker for the big drops.
Where does this rank in terms of coasters at Dorney park?
3rd for me.
Hmm, why do you think B&M's latest roller coasters are not as smooth as the older B&Ms?
I do not know what the cause is, but I hope they can fix it.
@@CanobieCoaster, likewise.
Between the vests and the rattle this ride is definitely my least favorite dive coaster, however it's nice to fill out an underrated top 5 at dorney!
It's a good ride even if it can't beat other dives.
I gray'd out on the 'side loop' and the rattle was insane. Restraints suck. No redeeming qualities. Never riding again.
I don't mind the restraints. Wish it didn't rattle as much though.
I’m so thankful that you weren’t stupid enough to give this coaster a good rating, like some of the others. Even without a rattle, this coaster is very underwhelming. I have a hard time believing it’s over 2000 feet long given the layout itself. And this is the new signature ride for the park? Says a lot about how lackluster Dorney Park is as a whole
I keep my reviews honest, praising things that are good and pointing out when things need to be improved. This is still a good addition for the park since they hadn't gotten a new coaster in a decade plus.
Its a mid ride. Upgrading the controls on steel force to be like mamba would make it elite
I'd love if Steel Force ran like Mamba.
@@CanobieCoaster steel mamba
Everyone is blaming b&m but I think whoever actually put it together at the park should be blamed. I think there's a reason it took them so long to get a new ride lol
I'm not sure who is at fault (designer, manufacturer, assembler), but that moment is so uncharacteristic at the end.
B&M has gotten especially lazy with their recent layouts and construction process. I miss when they used to take risks with their hypers and inverts to produce rides with out of the box airtime and strong positive Gs.
The roughness of Iron Menace should be a wake up call for them. And it’s likely a result of shoddy construction and numerous design flaws.
I am fine with the layout, but I wish the forces and smoothness were better.
Unfortunate that Dorney Park finally gets an expensive coaster and it turns out to be mediocre.
It's solid for me and guests seem to like it.
