When I saw the name, Bouvetøya, which I recognized as Bouvet Island, I had to watch your video. Bouvet has been a fascination to me since I first heard of it in an adventure novel called "The Disappearing Island," also known as "A Grue of Ice." I happened on this book in the late 1960s when I was a late teenager. The description of the island didn't actually reflect the reality of the island, other than the extreme cold, at least based on what little I've been able to find to read about it. As I remember, the big attraction of the Island, in the story, seems to have been cesium (or caesium, as it's spelled in the book), though I've never seen anything else mentioning this element being there. It was also the first place I ever heard of El Niño.
I see your channel is relatively new and you don’t have a lot of subscriptions or views yet. That said, your content and quality is better than many “larger” channels. Upshot - Keep it going, you have the qualities to be a much larger channel.
@@BGTuyau that’s a really good point. The best you could hope for would be to survive an ocean sinking in a lifeboat from a large cruise liner. With a bit of luck, the lifeboat could return to the ship to bring supplies which would enable you to last a long time. Or else maybe survive a plane crash (along with someone who had the stomach to remove the non survivors to a burial at sea), meaning that the plane could be used as a refuge and sleeping quarters. If you could grab anything brightly coloured to form the word “HELP” in large letters on the island and the world knew about the disaster and were actively searching, you’d stand a fair chance of being rescued (assuming you were not too badly injured in the first place). If you could use a lifeboat, you might, with a good skill at navigating, reach the South Sandwich Islands which are far closer than South Africa and have some form of habitation, at least in the summer. There’s also likely to be a radio to try and use to get help. If you knew where the Antarctic bases were situated Antarctica might not be a bad idea in the summer. If you’d got there from a shipping disaster and the ship sank very slowly, you could pick up flares which might help and some combustible material plus a box of matches. At least this would mean you could cook that seal you’d managed to catch if provisions had run out (though modern lifeboats carry all this stuff anyway). On second thoughts you’d better keep a few of the dead to eat if food ran out completely!
simple, just follow my 4 step plan: 1. eat birds for food 2. ??? 3. develop fins and blubber on your body to swim fast and keep warm 4. swim to cape town in only 2 hours
You might not have a choice about leaving. This island provided the backdrop for "Aliens vs. Predators" and if they show up you're doomed. On a lighter note, the amateur radio world is hoping that the operation planned for the island takes place in a few weeks.
Unless there is coal on the island, peat or driftwood on the beaches, I'd say it would be impossible to survive there without taking fuel to the island.
Great video! I'm a NZer and I too have been interested in Bouvet Island for ages. NZ has a number of sub-antarctic islands, all of which are now deserted ( Campbell Island used to have a few weather scientists but the met station there is now automated. )
Oh yeah New Zealand has loads of interesting ones. Originally this video was going to be about several islands with Antipodes being one of them, but I ended up just focusing on Bouvet. There's some other islands like Pitcairn and San Simón that I'd like to cover too at some point but I might have to add Campbell Island to that list ;)
@@goblinio - I'll check some of those out Thanks! Talking of the South Seas, Captain Bligh's sail to safety after the mutiny was a story in itself too.

I have been monitoring Ventusky and on February 21, 2024, at 10 PM, i observed a series of significant wave events ending in Lagos on February 28 at 4 AM. These huge waves consistently originate from this particular island. The latest event was recorded on May 27, 2024, between 10 AM and 4 PM. In total, I have identified seven similar events, which have all led me to pinpoint this specific island.
Aye! Ye be an excellent researcher and content creator. I've been watching a lot of nautical content lately, like maritime disasters and secrets of the seas, things like that and I think that's why I got recommended your video!
I remember reading about Bouvet Island when I was a kid. I remember myself imagining that I would escape there in case of nuclear war 😆 I was like this is the most remote island on the world, so it has to be the safest one ! Plus it is close to South Africa so it has to be a paradise on Earth ... hot climate and full of palm trees 😆 After many years I remembered about Bouvet, so I quickly googled it ... that was the first time I´ve ever seen it and when I saw that it is just a piece of ice I realized that I´d rather stay in my house and die by a nuclear blast 🤣 EDIT: Btw, I am shocked how small your channel is. I couldn´t believe my eyes when I saw you have just little over 500 subs. This is a great professional content, I hope you´ll get viral soon 🙂
Great vlog! A whole lot of nothing is around that island. I think there are remains of a Norwegian whale station on South Georgia called Grytviken. With imported reindeer from Norway.
a friend gave me Islands by roger lovegrove so i used google earth to look at some in the south pacific.i was really surprised to see how many tiny dots are filled with people. things that are just coral lagoons have landing strips and a village.
Caught my attention. Bouvet is always of interest to some amateur radio operators for contacts for the DX Century Club. Bouvet is near impossible to get unless an expedition has amateur radio capabilities.
In a frozen island you have pure water to drink from the ice. In a hot paradise island, you dont (maybe coconuts, but it is scarce). As plus, you have seals and pinguins, much meat. In hot island, just fish n maybe crabs. Icy islands are good shelter in case of world nuclear meltdown, if you can find or dig a cave. Because there are no trees to shelters, as in hot islands.
Here is yet another one who has always been intrigued by this place, and other remote locations as well. What I find particularly fascinating is whether any permanent human habitation could potentially be sustained in such a harsh place. What are the bare basics necessary for human survival? Fresh water, food, and shelter. On Bouvet, fresh water is obviously abundant from the glaciers, and some sort of shelter that would withstand the harsh whether conditions could certainly be constructed. I am not talking about a self-sufficient settlement here, so building structures could be imported. To my knowledge, there is actually a meteorological station on the island today. As for food, it's hard to say what the local economy would be based on. Hunting birds, perhaps? It's safe to assume that in order for residents to maintain a balanced diet, foodstuffs would have to be imported. The bottom line is that while humans can survive under the most extreme conditions, Bouvet may actually be taking it a tad too far. Thanks for an intriguing video!
There are no trees present, that would mean that having a supply line to the outside world would be required to get fuel to stay dry and warm and cook your food etc
One of most isolated islands on earth . Nearest place is Tristan de cunha, which itself is most isloated islands ! Really surprises how does it feel on such isolated places on earth !
I don't discount humans surviving as Shackleton and his men survived Elephant Island to South Georgia admittedly they were in a boat but it was pretty exposed to the conditions .
lol They really should have nabbed something with a more agreeable climate. I mean, if you're already in Norway you don't want to go looking for somewhere even colder and more miserable!
