As an OCG player, I have some thoughts about this data.
Regarding Tenpai: I think it tends to top a lot due to three main reasons
1) Representation - Tenpai is an extremely popular deck and in most tournaments, it will have top 2 representation. Part of it has to do with price as it's a very inexpensive deck, while decks like Yubel are extremely expensive as a playset of fusions can buy you 6 Tenpai decks alone. The other reason is that it's extremely easy to play, so if you go to locals, most players will own a Tenpai deck. So even if some Tenpai players lose to people who prep, it only takes a couple who have lucky runs where opponents don't see their side or they draw the perfect hand traps to have a high % of tops. My city's last large tournament had only 5% of Tenpai players convert, but it was the most topping deck.
2) Meta - Part of the issue is the most efficient strategy against Snake-Eyes being to hit it with hand traps early, but the other issue is Maxx C. Decks at the moment are largely not very good into Maxx C. Voiceless and Yubel are kinda good into Maxx C, but generally even the top decks are all pretty bad into Maxx C. So the solution is to just play a ton of hand traps and get them to pass back to you if you can't resolve your combo. And since this is a popular strategy then decks like Tenpai that are not weak to most hand traps tend to do better. Also, other one-card starters that are splashable like the Demonsmith stuff also encourage more hand traps.
3) Game 1. It's hard to explain how favored a deck is in 2/3 if it has a really strong game 1. But Tenpai wins a lot of game 1s, and that means even if the post-board matchup is good for you, it's difficult to win both games 2 and 3 because you can't always access your side. This last reason doesn't really explain why results are worse in the TCG though. I truly believe Maxx C is one of the main reasons.
To an extent, I do agree. I personally prep for Tenpai and have a very good winrate vs the deck, but most people in my city don't seem to be siding for it in their lists, and a lot of people complain about Tenpai. It has a very powerful perception in the OCG compared to the TCG. Part of it might be a lack of preparation, but I think the reasons above explain it best.
Regarding the Demonsmith engine:
The current OCG format is my least favorite format since I started playing with POTE. Beatrice absolutely has to be banned in the OCG next banlist. The article talked about some ways Beatrice causes some weird things to happen with the Blue Tears of an Angel card, but the exact non-games it enables aren't fleshed out. Some ways I've been getting FTK'd at my locals is Beatrice sends the Tears card in Snake-Eyes and it banishes to set Harpie's Feather Storm. Then they just use two bodies to make an Ensemblue Robin. Another example is Lab. Lab players playing the Demonsmith package send Transaction Rollback on their turn then send the Mayakashi trap in my draw phase.
I don't actually think it's that necessary to play the way a lot of my friends think because the Demonsmith package is massive (6-7 main, 5-6 extra deck + 2 more bricks, if they side an FTK line going first, and depending on Deck, is weak to certain hand traps like droll and crow), but it is supposed to eat hand traps so the actual starters can resolve, and you have no choice but the hand trap the Demonsmith stuff if you don't want to get FTK'd. This means that the Demonsmith stuff is worse going second because you replace non-engine, but better going first. However, it's so strong going first that it just kinda devolves the game into the coin toss.
Tl;Dr: Yugi business as usual. 😂😂😂
I feel like your thoughts on fiendsmith segment is just the nature of cards like Transaction Rollback and Beatrice. Banning only Beatrice would mean that the advantage gained by sending Rollback and Tears have real value and it would devolve into the "wheel of hits" like with all the Tuners and Halq until Rollback and Tears gets the hammer. Banning Rollback and Tears would balance that but then Beatrice would prolly find another payoff.
Isn't the fiendsmith engine in the way you described it also a counter to Tenpai? If your handtraps don't do much against them anyways, might as well try to ftk them?
@@UncleJrueForTue I haven't really thought too much about it, but I do agree with the general idea since I don't think banning Puppet would be better than just banning Expulsion. Problematic cards like Beatrice imo are just better off banned than banning each individual lock because they can just be replaced. I also think cards like Transaction Rollback are generally good for the game and it's just Beatrice that is a problem. But also since Branded Expulsion still isn't banned, IDK if Beatrice is getting banned in July even though everyone at my locals wants her banned since our locals post INFO has just devolved into FTK simulator.
@@skuamato7886 The Demonsmith stuff makes going first stronger, so in a way, it probably is. I don't really play Tenpai often, so I'm not 100% sure, but it also just gets stopped by a hand trap. Tenpai will never let the FTK resolve. It's just supposed to eat the hand traps so you can make actual interaction that Tenpai won't have enough hand traps to cover.
Tenpai in master duel will be a nightmare I can already feel it.

Mystic mine moment
@@createrz8433 Ok guys, but with all due respect. How are you not prepared for tenpai at this point. It’s a little ridiculous to not have a well thought out plan when entering a tournament.
I recently found a lab list that had a 15 card lab package with a ton of handtraps, and the entire side was the tenpai package so you could switch between tenpai and lab, its fun to watch the opponents choose first and then activate Sangen Summoning or such
That is what we call OCG deck building: building to not lose...
this was their moment, the only thing they HAD to do was to deck build to not lose to tempai
I also thought OCG players tended to build not to lose until I came to the OCG.
The issue is that OCG has far more casuals than TCG, and this is good in many ways because it means they can print lower rarities and not have stores shut down, but it also means that Konami is afraid of losing their playerbase to one of the many other card games. If they ban Block Dragon, then they are afraid the Adamancipator pet deckers will just quit and play One Piece. That's why they have so many consistency hits and rarely kill decks, but that's also why they left so many ridiculous things legal. So if you don't build in this exact way (Close to 40, Maxx C stops + Many Hand Traps for the FTK decks), then you will just lose many more games.
Assuming 40 cards, a Maxx C being opened by either player or both is ~56% of games. So when you play a match, you will see Maxx C. This is not considering that Maxx C favors the player going first because of deck thining and then potential draws. This means that you might as well play both Crossout and Called By to increase the number of games you can play, especially because there are so many hand traps, and both Crossout and Called By have additional utility by hitting other hand traps. There's just no other way you can build. You're not going to win consistently with more engine - which is tragic because the current way decks are built leads to lower skill expression imo.
@@SunnyYGOSo they're scared that some casuals will leave so they leave degenerate cards legal. Yikes.
They gotta do better
@BlackBeartic229 The whole point of leaving to play One Piece is to escape _from_ degeneracy _to_ slow and interactive games, what are they smoking? Are they stupid?
This is playing to lose. They are ignoring Tenpai when it's been the second most represent deck since it released....
tenpai gets points from people having the entire core in the side deck and switching the whole deck mid round after winning r1 and opponent going first r2 🗿
Hell yeah, that’s rad. Big brain time.
Smokescreen Lab, or Centur-Ion
@@SmashingPapaya i personally prefer centurion, only 15 labrynth cards doesnt feel enough for me, and also his board somethimes could be just two pops and follow up, contrary to centurion that is a turn skip turbo.
Also with centurion and tenpai you have the option to run shifter, and that is an insta win vs most meta decks, voiceless is the only that can somewhat play around it, and kashtira if you count it as a meta deck
That's pretty cool ngl
@@DR-fw9ic It's the other way around.
The idea isn't to have Tenpai siding a deck, but to side Tenpai INTO a deck. Centur-ION obviously is better at that than Lab, but 15 cards is all tenpai needs.
Ocg caught slacking
friendly reminder these are the players that brought Spright Purrely to Worlds and thought they were cooking
Something I've noticed about pure White Woods is it is impossible to end with Fiendess if you can't normal summon Asteria. So it would be nice if they gave it a Trisukta that special summons non-tuner lv.2s instead so if you normal summon Silve and use Risettes' effect you can still end on Fiendess and Woes. They also need at least 1 more 1 card starter. Astoria and Rissette(If they got their own version of Trisukta) would probably be enough if they got a 1 card starter. If they do get a 1 card starter it would be nice if it was a continuous spell or field spell that gave you a extra normal summon. The normal summon would let you normal summon Silve, add Legend, Legend add Asteria, and normal summon Asteria. The obvious benefit of it being a extra normal summon is that its immune to certain effects in the game. In addition to all of this it would be nice if it could be set after sending it to grave like other spell/trap cards in the archetype. What I like about White Woods the most is how surprisingly consistent it is despite not having real 1 card combos. This deck wants Forbidden Droplet and Impermanence being a trap is a huge plus to. It feels like as long as you can end on Fiendess. Woes, and a hand trap or Forbidden Droplet its enough because you can board wipe with Red D. Archfiend. It won't beat a unaffected monster but its good enough to beat everything else. You have to consider that White Woods can make Dweller so those recursion effects won't necessarily work.
Decks with an "Ignorance" mechanic are always terrifying. That's usually a sign they're meant to OTK or wipe a board and potentially end a game hyper fast no matter what the opponent's on.
I don't think people are "ignorant" on how it works, but the ways they're trying to beat it are too inconsistent at the moment, and they're too scared of rewiring their game plan(aside from some lazy side deck options that don't do enough to other decks) to handle their Battle Phase specific shenanigans since commiting too far into that is going to get you clobbered by more "conventional" summon spam tactics like what Snake-Eye utilizes. If the hand traps are the problem, deal with THOSE. If you have a Extra Deck as flexible as Snake-Eye you have no excuse to be losing to this stuff.
Most people have an extra deck option available to them that can either negate/prevent attacks or cut off battle damage. Rank 1s and 4s are the most obvious examples, though some high investment Synchros can also do this(as well as things like Golden Swordsoul that can be activated from hand to do this while still having utility in other areas). Those options won't make the deck EASY to beat, but at least can give you a fighting chance without having to always rely on bricky side deck cards that can just get thwarted before they do anything and that rarely prevent offramps or deal with the hand traps that leave your board vulnerable to their shenaingans.
Tenpai giving me ocg tear flashbacks
I have been a memento fan for a while and let me tell you Sir, it is super fun. Just a heads up most of the destruction is NON targeting which makes the deck A LOT better then people think when they first interact with the deck. It has A handtrap dodge built into the engine and can win without the extra deck as well. Its a super cool deck. Enjoy
If you look at the side decks of the older list you can see they were more prepped for tempai than in the newer one

Beatrice should have been banned years ago but here we are
Because using it twice is funny.
8:51 You can draw and use it off Maxx "C", cannot do that with Threatening Roar.
With all due respect, how are they not prepared for this yet
Because it's a neat 15 card core that can just be side deck in and out.
That's it.
You prepare for this, you lose to something else.
Your flipping a coin.
Tbf their YCS’s are one round tournaments, we consistently side deck tremendously better than the OCG does.
OCG side things in small increments. We are still scared of snake eyes because last banlist did absolutely nothing to that deck except kicking the diabellestar engine, guess what? FK swoops in to carry snake eyes.
And OCG rarely if ever put out a banlist to kill a deck immediately, the sting of MR4 is still felt since then. When MR4 pops out it killed a lot of decks immediately that a massive chunk of OCG players quit IMMEDIATELY. This is why they do things in small increments unlike the recent TCG banlist where it was a slaughter
What's crazy is how some TCG players do not believe this at all and say that MR4 decimating the OCG playerbase is a myth "because nobody else talks about it" or "other card games had profit drops during 2017, this is nothing special", or the usual "YCS attendances are hitting record numbers in 2017, Yugioh wasn't dying in MR4!"
@@ryuuohdeltaplus7936 japanese players are not starved for choice for TCG (the genre, not banlist) and the price for cards are not that expensive (cue the cheap-ass price for pot of prosperity as an example) so if they quit YGO they can switch almost immediately with little money investment, this is why CG that are considered a flop in the west is still thriving in JP
I remember there was an argument about maxx c using this MR4 as debacle saying "if they survive MR4 surely they can survive a maxx c ban
@@hoshi314 While OCG players are split in 3 camps regarding Maxx C (like it, hate it, indifferent to it), an opinion I see among JP players is that banning Maxx C would result in a repeat of the MR4 disaster. It's silly how TCG players cling to the "OCG players hate Maxx C too!", but completely ignoring that 2/3 of the OCG playerbase are amicable towards it.
@@ryuuohdeltaplus7936 exactly, sweeping changes brings sweeping consequences. While i disagree with how the OCG handles incremental hits (remember how long it takes for tear to die off?) i at least know there was a precedent behind it so it's not that huge of a fuss for me
@@hoshi314 While OCG banlist's incremental hits makes the meta rather long-lasting, and "stale", the benefit is that players can enjoy playing the top decks for a long period of time. They know that the meta will eventually shift and the meta deck of today will eventually be hit enough times that it won't be top anymore, but it builds confidence towards the card game better than the TCG way of every banlist being a chopping block to whatever the current meta deck is.
Kuriphoton protects you from gimmick ftk since their field blocks most things
I love the dynamics this represents because if people start main decking the r1 xyz and go to it when opp gives you first, you can start playing a mind game where you intentionally do that so your opp makes a suboptimal board and win pushing through that
Angel of Blue Tears might be a spicy tech in Josh's paleo deck! All it needs are some enablers to reliably trigger effect damage for the search.
I'm thinking of Vaalmonica since the negligible self-ping literally procs your engine. 😂
Destruction of destiny :D
Yubel only sees so much play because Tenpai is seeing so much play
Tenpai is seeing so much play because it outs the Snake-Eyes board by consistently FTKing them
its busted with fiendsmith
I don't understand how there isn't at least droplets floating around. In TCG forbidden droplets and book of eclipse in the main deck is becoming more and more popular to block tenpai in the bp. In the side Daruma cannon/d barrier is also seeing more play.
True, that is the whole point of the video, though historically speaking OCG really does not like to make huge jumps in the side deck. They tend to run cards against like all the meta decks and not laser focuson the best deck.
Beatrice definitely cant exist in a fiend smith legal format
It's interesting how cards like Tenpai and Mistic mine have predator/prey qualities to them. They almost measure the health of a format and keep other strategies in check.
Seems like OCG is going through what I call the "Hearthstone effect" where players refuse to adapt to the meta because they think their deck will drop win rate. Or they tech one card like the Xyz monsters named here and think that's all they need because it worked in locals.
God, I dislike playing against Tenpai so much. It is truly the king of all helmet decks.

u have to side for it and even then if u dont draw your out to tenpai u can only pray they brick
the reliable way was to use fiendsmith engine summon out Beatrice, dump Rise To Full Height against tenpai, u dont even need LL as SE, against others, well just dump blue tear combo and set whatever trap u liked
that is why many are main decking droll,1-2, some at 3 against fiendsmith even tenpai
yubel or SE is the best contender at using fiendsmith engine, the downside is extra deck space, as u could only pick either accesscode or zealantis for game, so your game plan mostly are play out all your cards and win on turn 1, both can summon out a huge resource of body for link climb, 2 link4 monster is easy if u used fiendsmith engine, multiple line to play under nib or disrespect nib and go for the biggest board possible
because of that fabled lurrie is super expensive and it only reprint in ranking tournament pack, yubel's phantom being expensive makes the deck with fiendsmith the most expensive in this meta, therefore its rare to see yubel fiendsmith in local
The deck is more affordable and it’s new.
Kuriphoton is searchable by Photon Lord, a decent rank 8 that u can slot in to pure SE. Can side 1 photon lord 1 kuriphoton (or main if u rly need to)

Waboku is slightly worse because they can still attack, which means they can still summon more cards so they can set up spheres and stuff. But yeah generally either one being set up means the tenpai player loses.
The moment when you're scared of a one of (reboot) and decide to play kuriphoton instead XD
Isn't d barrier even better cause it also helps shut out other matchups?
@@bl00by_ kuriphoton has a lot more uses than just tenpai, it's also good vs yubel and gimmick puppet FTK
Tenpai is actually a good cohesive strategy. Not hard to understand. Also representation plays a huge role. If half the room is tenpai then it will have good results by default.
Great now that josh saw kuriphoton people will be playing my tech now
So basically: literally a skill issue
Can people stop talking about simul archfiends??
Tenpai is siding Kuriphoton because it is a handtrap that you could topdeck with Maxx C
Its searchable via fiendsmith tractus
I hate tenpai dragons, pure going second decks are so annoying…
Putting in too much tech to play against tenpai can ruin the deck when you're not playing against tenpai,so people might not consider to fully commit for them yet
Washua is just mad he is wrong again
Faux intellectual 😂
Maybe just maybe your assessment of the deck is wrong?
Why are you screaming? You got a mic 😅
Once again you were same guy that got clap on stream using snake eyes lost to tenpai
When 6 head duelist loses to konamis front office. Why respect is hard to get when you act like you really understand this game 😂
Gee......maybe if we had some floodgates to encourage these tenpai players to play spell/trap removal....oh wait......yall whined and cried too much about the floodgates and got 95% of them banned or limited
Bro you play Runick. You have no right to speak.
