Thanks so much for posting this. In my youth I absolutely worshipped "The Fugitive" and David Janssen. I had no idea he had hosted HP, whose surprisingly small (1500 seats) building, across Vine Street from Capitol Records, I saw several times when I lived in L.A..

The Tim Conway routine that starts at 13:00 is one of the funniest thing I've ever seen. Seeing Janssen trying to keep a straight face is 4-star entertainment. Conway toying with Janssen is comedy gold.

Wonderful, rated-G variety entertainment... And to think that this was from a time when we had 3 major networks & just a few local channels, TV was free because the sponsors & ads paid for it. Now we pay ridiculous amounts for cable or dish, get hundreds of channels, & most of what's on is garbage!

This is a summer repeat, as the "two weeks from tonight" show was a repeat of the February 20, 1965 telecast featuring Bette Davis (and Bert Lahr).

Back in the '50s and '60s, with only 3 TV networks, new TV series always got at least 13 weeks to find its audience. Since Tim Conway co-starred on so many failed series, he joked "President Johnson should send me to Vietnam. The war will be over in 13 weeks."

Ernie Kovacks thought that the income tax system was unfair. He refused to pay taxes. At his death, his widow Edie Adams was left with the hefty bill. She paid the bills by doing cigar commercials -among other things.

The major "other things" were singing on tv variety shows and clubs, and she repackaged Kovacs' material and kept his work in front of the public. She was highly respected

One could tell that David Janssen was nervous hosting "The Hollywood Palace". As he remarked during his opening monolog he neither sang or danced, so he just introduced the acts that appeared on the show that evening. As for his own show, "The Fugitive" it was, at least in my opinion, one of the best dramatic series ever aired on television. Unfortunately for Janssen the success of "The Fugitive" limited his motion picture career to secondary roles, so he spent the rest of his life acting on movies made for television, and of course three seasons as "Harry O". Janssen died way too young [at age 48]; a death brought on by his heavy drinking, smoking and [alleged] drug habits.

This is a summer 1965 repeat, as Schlitz is promoting "Real Gusto Days" (which they did during the summer) at 12:36....and Salem began their "Turn to Salem for a taste that's Springtime Fresh" campaign that very summer.

Connie Hawkins as a GLOBETROTTER, wow!
He played for them while he was suspended= supposedly from ever playing pro ball, due to a point shaving scandal when he was at the U of IOWA.
He basically knew about the shaving, and did not report it even as it was never strongly proven that he participated in it, which considering it took place while he was a freshman and frosh did not play varsity then, it would have been impossible for him being involved in any varsity point shaving. He played in the Old ABL, its successor the ABA where he was MVP, and then once his suspension was lifted when his lawsuit forced the NBA to admit it could not win the suit because it had no proof of him gambling or shaving, THE HAWK finally got into the big league, where once in the NBA..he became a Hall of Famer..

Funny seeing Schlitz beer as a sponsor. They were for many years #2 only to Budweiser, so Schlitz hired away from Anheuser-Busch their brewmaster, Frank Sellinger, and put him in charge. He completely changed Schlitz's recipe to taste like Budweiser. They bought an entire Super Bowl halftime to stage the preposterous "Bud-Schlitz Taste Challenge" moderated by former NFL ref Tommy Bell. Here's the problem: People who love Budweiser's taste stuck with Bud rather than buying Schlitz's Fake Bud. Those who loved the original Schlitz for its taste did NOT like Bud, and abandoned Schlitz. Today the Schlitz brand is a faint echo.

David Janssen looks great; he was at the zenith of his success with The Fugitive- he looks happy and well rested. As his career progressed, he became dissipated looking, probably attributable to excessive drinking and smoking. By the time that he died at 49, he appeared to be ten years older. Vic Damone, one of his guests, is still one of the best popular singers alive, even in his mid 80s.
