Castleton Floods: The Aftermath of Storm Babet

  • This is a return visit to the sites of the flood to see what damage had been caused and the impact of the flash flooding after storm Babet hit the high peak in Castleton at the weekend, causing Peakshole water to burst its banks and flood the area. It was the highest water level seen in 40 years. It became a raging torrent flooding the village in several areas including Mill Bridge, Spital Bridge and the main road near the visitor centre.
    Locals had to sandbag their properties and use pumps to try and get rid of the water.
    A lot of the Peak District was, and still is, affected by this extreme rainfall.
    Thoughts are with those affected and I hope they haven't suffered too much.

    Castleton is my favourite place , I used to walk round at least once a week with my kids, winter and summer ,I don’t think I ever saw it flooded like that in forty years. I live in Cornwall now but Derbyshire will always be my spiritual home. So pleased it wasn’t any worse and thank you so much for reminding me of the beauty of that lovely village.

    Heartbreaking Stu. I'm glad it was over relatively quickly, but those affected will need drying out before they can return to normality. Whilst I'd love to see Kinder Downfall in full flood, I'm giving it a week or so as I don't want to be up to my ears in bog. Thanks for sharing, and I'm glad you were spared.

    My small town in Cheshire has the fast River Dane that flows into the River Weaver,when in flood ,it backs up in the towns bull ring damaging shops pubs etc..our biggest flood in 1946 was terrible..my old Aunt said they had fish in the bath in the house from the River rise !..it does so much damage,nature can be a beast unleashed😢

    Good to see the floods have now gone. It's just the mess it leaves afterwards. Also scary to see the height the river water had got to in order to flood and how fast it was still flowing.

      Yeah it was something else. People have rallied round helping each other which is good to see. We're due more rain today and tomorrow but not in a short space of time so should be OK

    It looks like there could be a higher, stronger flood defence wall put in to help, also given Castleton's location, that some arabale land could be used for an overspill? But guessing that would cost many millions so given the community size it wouldn't get the money? Cheaper and at v little cost to the gov and council atm, given the clean up mostly falls to each home owner or business.

      You're exactly right, they won't make any investment. They struggle to invest at all in infrastructure in this country

    At least your area is high enough in elevation that the water was able to run off somewhere , limiting the soak in damage

    • @thepeakdistrictviking
      @thepeakdistrictviking  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Very true, the waters receded very quickly overnight

    • @thepeakdistrictviking
      @thepeakdistrictviking  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No we are up in the hills, but it does seem to be a more frequent occurence these days, i think its a combination of change in weather and poor investment in infrastructure, although in this case I think its just the amount of rain in a short period
