I was lucky to get the Acoustic Sounds edition of Oliver Nelson The Blues and the Abstract Truth and it sounds simply breath taking. Great video Micheal!
My 2 cents worth on your new video setup...I prefer the wider focus because I enjoy your curtain and I really prefer the sound of your voice with the clip-on mic. Thank you, Michael for the Oscar Peterson - We Get Requests recommendation. I got the Verve from Amazon and it is AWESOME!
Hi Michael! I’ve been following you for some time now, but I felt I needed to comment on this one. Firstly, the new camera set up is great : focus, image quality, perspective, etc. Secondly, I’m getting these new pressings today, can’t wait to give them à spin. Keep it up!
Thanks for the video. I'm new to your channel and loved your comments about these amazing sounding reissues. I need to get my hands on them because, like you say, when they are gone, they are gone!
Congratulations on the new camera/lens Michael! A few tips: - if you want to record at 60 frames per second (fps) like it seems you did in this video, the shutter speed should be set to 120. To be honest, I think 24 frames per second would give you a better look, more cinematic, less soap opera/modern tech TH-camr, but it's up to you. In case you decide to record at 24 frames per second (fps), the shutter speed should be set to 48 or 50. If you use 30 fps, shutter should be set to 60. This settings would allow a more natural, less "choppy" movement. - regarding the autofocus, maybe go into the settings at make it just focus on the center of frame, instead of a "wide" setting (that's the default on many cameras), that should help you with the focus stability, as least when talking to camera. If you need to ask more technical questions about cameras/lighting, I'd be glad to help! Best wishes from Chile.
@@JamboLinnman agree. Too much focus on soap opera michael. Not that he’s not a handsome gentleman. But record shelves are the most interesting thing to look at here.
I bought the last copy of Nelson’s at my local record shop 2 day’s ago. It will sell out fast they think. I love Nelson’s liner notes. He explains the structure of his compositions very interesting.
I got excited when you said you thought Chet Baker sings was back in stock, I’ve had that ordered from the Blue note store for over a year! When I went to the store and Amazon though it doesn’t look like it’s back yet. Fingers crossed, luckily I’ve got the Craft one to keep me going which sounds incredible.
I've ordered Oliver Nelson the blues and the abstract truth by mistake, and what great mistake that was. One of my favorites. All best thinks happen accidentally.
Dear Michael Thanks for another wonderful review can't wait to get my copies A comment on the equipment I very much prefer the old setup it was perfect There is a very shallow depth of field, the blurred background is very distracting , the same with focus which seems to be changing with every movement I wish you could go back to the old setup or calibrate the new equipment to get the same result , that is both the background and foreground are in focus with fixed focus Thank you
Hey Michael, quite a little debate on the video set-up we got going here eh? Going to side with the folks in the "new gear camp", although, I do think a bit more depth of field would look a little less "trendy". Also, I can hear the lens motor when its autofocusing, maybe best to go back to the lapel mic until you get a less noisy lens. Anyway, thought I'd share my two sense since I am a professional photographer, take it or leave it and as always, thanks for the great content and keep up the great work.
Hi Michael, I watch your channel because of your passion for music and this great hobby of collecting records. I would suggest keeping your original setup, it makes your channel more original and authentic different from the others, less is more. The importance here is the content of the channel keep the focus on that, and you will continue with your success, don't waste your time with camera set up and lights. Just my two cents. Cheers.
Like the greater clarity BUT the lack of depth of field is very distracting, sound is better than previously. Waiting for my copies of Sonny Rollins: On Impulse, Oliver Nelson: The Blues and The Abstract Truth to arrive from the States.
A Simple question for you. What are the wrap around plastic covers you use for your records? I have a lot of the Tone Poet albums and saw that you have manged to wrap yours in some kind of protective cove
I concure with others that i like your background. Perhaps try setting the aperture to a smaller f stop. This will allow us to see the background and should prevent the focus hunting.
First, thank you for the informative video. I also prefer your previous video and audio set-up for the same reasons already mentioned. The changing focus is quite distracting and there also seems to be a low level “creaking” noise during this video. I wonder if it may be either from your chair (love the chair), or possibly from the focus mechanism of the camera. As always, take good care!
haven't heard of the "blues and the abstract truth" I'll have to explore that one. (On Impulse i have.) camera set up was cool - set the aperture to f/2.8 maybe.. just so the background is a little more in focus would be my taste..but it looked cool either way. NOthing you can do about the lens focus motor sound without either a lapel mic or someone to rack the focus for you. (Although, i hear the new mirrorless camera/lens set ups have almost eliminated forcus motor sound...i dont have one, so no way for me to be sure ;) )
The video focus may need a tad more calibration. I don’t mind it, to be honest. I think it adds more “presentation”. Just need to get it just about right. Cheers, Michael!
Michael, I luv when you do these comparisons. I believe I have the 45rpm version of the Oliver Nelson, but now I have to go and check as I have had it for awhile. I just picked up the Sonny Rollins and Oliver Nelson today (I want to do a shoot out with my previoys copy) and I had to wait for a week because of a delay. Michael is right buy now or cry later. These pressing plants are booked up and the Bluenote Classics Lee Morgan Side Winder and Wayne shorter are still not back in stock yet. I have some Classics to still buy and I will do a bulk order, but man they are selling out. Bluenote could say thats it until they catch up. The John Coltrane A Love Supreme on Acoustic Sound Series is still back ordered.
Haha! Karl had to make sure his nest was perfect before lying down! Good boy! Too much focus hunting, too little depth of field, but otherwise a great show today!👍
please record your "fireside chats" on SUPER 8mm film and project them onto a large white bedsheet....unfortunately film has no sound....we will all learn sign language together!
As a new convert to jazz I'm now spending way too much money after watching your vidoes. I'm liking the blurred background effect but you need to sit still!! Great name for a dog by the way, hope it's spelled the correct way (with a C).
I prefer the earlier video configuration. The focus shift as you move back and forth is distracting. You have put time into your interior design and precise organization of records in the background - let us enjoy your achievements and don't blur it out. We all enjoy Karl's guest appearances!
Yeah, sorry I didn’t like the camera upgrade Michael. I like the old style in general where everything was in focus and not a constant hunt to stay in focus by that new lens/camera (and you can actually hear the constant sound of the lens trying to get focused which will get annoying). One of the most important features of your channel was being able to see the records all organized in the background, the impulse, the one steps, uhqr’s, MM’s, etc and that famous colorful curtain. Now we cannot see that :( You don’t need to change that style in my opinion. Even the colors or the lighting makes the records when you show them colorless, too shiny bright, takes time to get in focus,etc.. I’m sure you’ll figure it out, but I’d say, keep it the same as before, it was already perfect as it was. Just my humble opinion. But it is appreciated that you are trying new things to improve the quality of your videos (but I think it was already perfect as it was). Maybe switching it up, going to different areas of your house would be better (since you have a beautiful house) before you used to go outside, you can also shoot next to your audio system, speakers etc, use that area. Drop a needle once in a while, even if it’s for 20 sec, or however you can drop without getting demonetized or copyrighted. Maybe out side in the rooftop with the view of the city would be nice too. Just ideas
Hello Michael, great video!
Thank you for your video and information about the albums.
I really enjoy it. Great stuff
Thank you! Have a wonderful one

Danke Michael für deine hohe Qualität in Bild und Ton sowie deine exzellenten Beschreibungen, besser geht nicht 🥇
LOVE the NEW camera!!!!!!! Schön gemacht!
Get my Oliver Nelson today. Wow, what a great sounding Record. Danke für die Inspiration, Michael.

That Oliver Nelson pressing is beautiful. Great series.
This footage has a sonic flair vibe. Thanks for doing a shootout!!!! #VCdogs
Good morning!☀️ I Always enjoy your videos!
Image better, audio I like the old format better. But always the reviews and information, priceless!
Always A Good Watch
Love the difference in video quality!!
I love Sonny Rollins on Impulse! I want to get the Oliver Nelson album, too.

hey cool intersting tips. i did ist on 50 Frames. i have 100 questions … so nice That you have me this Tutorial thx so much Felipe
@@Michael45RPM I'd be glad to help, either here, discord, email, zoom, etc.
I also prefer a deeper depth of field (smaller aperture, higher f-stop) as I like your background!

The image quality is a big step forward. Wow 🤩. But yes the focus requires a little calibration
Like the new camera system. You are more in focus and the album are better presented
I need some "sonny rollins" in my life! I agree about the 45s!
Blues and the Abstract Truth? I used the opening track of that LP as my theme when I began my jazz radio show eack week.

Looks good
Oh and BTW Acoustic Sounds has a 10% off sale this weekend which brings the price of these albums down to $31.50.
Great video quality, but would be great with a smaller apature so we get a litte more depth of field.
Dear Michael
Thanks for another wonderful review can't wait to get my copies
A comment on the equipment
I very much prefer the old setup it was perfect

Hi Michael, I studied photography so I like bokeh but not on video. On video I like everything in focus. But it looks quality.

Thanks Michael..agree with comments the auto focus is also very noisy and off-putting. Great video though and I've ordered both as a result..thank you

looks really nice. can you share which camera & lens you are using ?
Hi Michael. Great video as always. Not sure about the new camera though. The blurry background is distracting. Sorry, but just thought I should say.

Maybe better to invest in audio recording equipments so at least we get some idea of what the records sound like.

Imho The new equipment is not helping to improve the quality of your videos and is more of a distraction.
Best of luck!
Never mind all that wanky “bokeh” at f/2.0….. how about an in focus tour of your record shelves? Just asking! 😀
