Alex Johnson he was comparing a 27,000 model, not the base. This video is irrelevant to the base as it has different braking, cornering, and acceleration characteristics; as well as different trick suspension, lightweight wheels, and more powerful motor. Let me sell you on a $40,000 BMW 3 series by driving you around in a $65,000 M3... It's illogical at best, and a deceitful practice.
***** how can you possibly expect the 1299 to be any cooler than the 899? All Panigales get hot. All that ass-burning heat is coming from that rear cylinder header, not the actual engine / cooling system so the fan wouldn't really make that much difference anyways (plus, if it's getting that hot - it's overheating). These kinds of bikes aren't designed to be sitting around in traffic on. If you want to keep your ass cool and have something to ride in traffic I'd suggest not riding a supersport/superbike. That said, my 2012 S1000RR (sold) made a great commuter as far as superbikes go (the heated grips alone are pretty awesome). If I had the cash lying around for a third bike right now I'd buy the 2015. The 1299 is probably the worst commuting bike out of all the bikes in its class. Awesome bike - I plan to upgrade my 899 to one next year - but it's shit in traffic - even my 899 is friggin horrible in the city.
***** oh I agree with you and I'm not really taking it to heart / defending Ducati. The bike definitely has its issues - more than just the hot balls situation. They did actually change the heat shield on the header pipe but apparently it's only slightly cooler (aka still gonna roast your ass, lol). I guess for me it's more of something I can live with because I love the rest of the bike so much. I'm no brand loyalist either, I just liked the way the Panigale fit me, rides, looks, etc. I switch brands all the time. But yeah, as someone who lives in the city, I feel your pain having to sit in traffic to get out to the good riding sometimes. I've just learned to time it to go ride before or after rush hour and things are all good - otherwise I just suck it up since the bike is so much fun once I'm past the stoplights :).
***** and you think BMW products don't break down? My old M3's second home was on the back of a tow truck! Also, why would you wait two years for the warranty to expire and the bike to depreciate even more before you swap it for a BMW? Your logic sucks, lol. All these European bikes are expensive to own and maintain. If you're that concerned with reliability I suggest you go buy a Honda.
if commuting and long distance is your thing the fz's are perfect. if you like having the power to beat almost anything on the road and adrenaline in between your legs i suggest an r1. all rider preference
The review was great, in regards to the editing though, the background music was way too loud, had to play back the video a few times to hear things I missed.
great review as always...thanks Steve! really enjoy your no bs assessment on bikes getting straight to the facts...I base my motorcycle purchases on your reviews
I've noticed a lot of people commenting on the R1 as having "not as much mid-range torque as we'd expected". In the review you said "opening the throttle, it doesn't quite unleash overwhelming acceleration"...surely that's a good thing? All reviews I've seen of the Ducati, people say it's too aggressive and not practical for every day road use. It seems the R1 is perfect for that.
+James Murphy True that.. got a kawasaki Z1000 with fuel controller. that bike is just mental at low rpm its so hard to ride around town.. smooth acceleration are way much better for both street and when you're accelerating out of a corner on the track.
these people dont relaize either that Yamahas fuel maps were created for road use in mind exactly as you said. Thats why the R1 is also the most roadable bike in all these comparisons. Best electronics best suspension and best useability. An ecu flash will give you that all power all the time power curve like the euro bikes
If you compare apples amd bananas, they're overpriced. Stock Panigale 1299 vs stock R1 would have been more accurate. The price difference isn't that big. If you compare R1M and 1299S, the price difference ain't that big neither.
They seem overpriced but if you keep it well maintained and cared for the Ducati's really hold their value so well. Provided you don't buy new - always much better to get a beautiful 3-4 year old one which has lost a lot of its original purchase price.
This is a really interesting way to provide a review! Well done! You give an everyman's review here on TH-cam, and link back to your own site for the race oriented review (which any huge fan is going to be eager to check out). I'm a fan! I like this format much more than motorcycle.com's 99% video review with a final verdict of "oh guys, you'll never believe this, for the 1000th time in a row it was so close you have to go to the website to look at the final score cards."
I almost always give like to your videos, but to claim boldly both R1 and Panigale are the best two, without mentioning Aprilia... Well, sorry, it needed to be in this mix.
Visordown Motorcycle News Yup! Rechecked it my self. Sorry for that. Thank you for your patience with me :) Obviously, non native English speaker here :)
>Auto-blip downshifts didn't convince as they are a "leap of faith" >During deceleration, auto-blip makes the 1299 more stable Jeez, make up your mind already
yah he was a bit all over the place in the review. even as a yamaha owner the auto blip downshift is very useful even in town. BUT the yamaha is no way gets squirrely in decel.
+GettingLowWithLebo says the guy that doesn't even ride...all those bikes are pointlessly fast...even my hypermotard can go from zero to dead in 3 seconds
I don't ride? Not only do I ride daily (Daytona 675) I work in the bike industry which means I get the opportunity to ride many kinds of bikes. What made you say that? All I'm pointing out is that the r1 does not have more power than the bmw which is what he claimed in the video
Firstly, I'm neither American nor a highway racer (here in Australia we have EU spec bikes). Nobody said anything about torque but the BMW actually makes more torque than the r1, although the r1 torque peaks lower in the RPM range which gives it an advantage. I've seen quite a few dyno tests and only one put the panigale ahead of the BMW even in EU spec. The highlight of the new R1 is the chassis/handling and superb electronics. All I originally stated is that the BMW has the most outright power, which is true.
+GettingLowWithLebo I think people don't understand the difference between a dyno test and the claimed numbers.... And the problem is that BMW guaranties you the hp while all the others claim they have measured that in there tests. So most BMW will have way more than claimed and the rest has something lower than claimed.....
Uhhm.. just for clarification, you do NOT hold the throttle on for the downshifts. You shut off the throttle and begin braking while also downshifting, without the clutch, and it AUTO-BLIPS the engine/throttle. This is "clutchless downshifting". You would never hold the throttle on during deceleration.. doesn't even make sense.
Well, no.. But you might downshift w/o clutch to get increased power from a lower gear, needing to accelerate in a hurry. Wish my 2003 Duc 900SS could do that. Mind you it doesn't have any driver aids, no ABS, no TC..
Makes no sense to me. Nearly 2000 miles on my 1299. Down shifter is amazing (don't know how I lived without it) and engine is as smooth as any other bike I've had. Could tour on this bike easy (limited range would be a problem I guess) and it actually looks good.
u misunderstood the quickshifter on downshift. ur supposed to shut the throttle completely before u downshift. on downshift the quickshifter act like an auto-blipper eliminating the need to grab the clutch lever and blip the throttle and minimize the rear wheel wobble, so you can focus on corner entry. it means a lot to average riders on the track and its fun too on the street. it makes u feel like a pro
"It takes much more of a leap of faith to go down without shutting off than going up"? I reckon you might have missed the point of, or don't know how best to use an auto blipper. Quick shifters enables wide open throttle up shifts with no need to clutch or momentarily rolling off the throttle to assist up shifting. Auto blippers enable clutchless down shifting without need for 'rev matching' right hand throttle blips/inputs while also braking. Put simply, brake with your right hand, downshift with your left foot, take the corner. That's it, no need to "shut off" the throttle because you're not on it when you're setting up corner speed and entry. If you can't work it out then you're probably right, it's not for you.

+Ninad Ganore Problem with the blade is that it's outdated, with not a lot of power, and overpriced with no electronics. If it at LEAST came with electronic suspension, steering damper, and traction control I'd say it's a good buy. Still needs more power too... Honda and suzuki are just behind the pack.
+ConTacTzDiddy the new r1 looks unnatural and robotic, and also it doesn't have any characteristics of any previous r1 ,as If yamaha was embarrassed by its predecessors,I loved the near 2004 models. The latest one doesn't look like it has soul.
+Ninad Ganore its called progression. theyve made a road legal gp bike... thats the design. a race ready bike isnt made to be pretty. ride one and youll never say a negative thing again
Never rode a crossplane in my life, honest question, how is in downshift, the same than a normal? Are vibration the same? I always thought about crossplane as a big complication, like a turbilion in a watch and I am in doubt...
Japanese bikes are maintenance free. They run for eternity. Good in gas mileage too. European bikes on contrary demands huge premium to maintain. The engine needs overhaul in less than 3 years. Their fuel efficiency is poor too. Styling is the only advantage for Ducati, otherwise it's the R1 that wins hands down.
did he say the r1 is 14 k and the pani 27 k ? cant be , but what are the prices in england ? in holland the r1 is 20.9 k euro and the pani 1299s is 29,9 k euro . are we paying most again ?
+wasn't me well try buying these bikes in Malaysia. Roughly, Yamaha R1 = RM 120k, Ducati 1299 Panigale = RM 150k. That's equivalent to 25k euro for R1, and 31k euro for 1299s.
+mim sulaiman thats bullshit , why the fook they taxing so much . and the difference isnt the same either , you pay roughly 4 k more for the r1 then there and 'only ' 2 k more for the pani
yeah. its all bullshit. I'll be needing extra years to buy one. A lot of extra years. but for now i own the z800. which cost me RM 50k = 10k euro. Just enough to make me happy. but still, it is frustrating thinking that all of them are overpriced b'cause of taxes. It pisses me off.
God, these HP claims are so ridiculous. They never tell you that number is to the crank. Put these bikes on a good-quality, calibrated dyno and I guarantee they're in the 170's.
Actually they aren't at all ridiculous. Most of us understand when they say a number that it's crank hp and already have a figure in mind for roughly what wheel hp would be. Crank hp is not at all a meaningless number either. I know my CBR is ~180 crank and 155 dyno. So I know this Ducati is going to be in the 170's to 180's if it has 205 crank, which is HUGE, especially for a bike that weighs less than 400 pounds. Basically, most of us know what a certain power level is going to feel like with a given weight of motorcycle and rider, we don't need dyno numbers, they're pointless.
I am a hardcore superbike lover but I've had enough with these bikes. They are fun if you are young and your body can take it but its pointless to put yourself through pain riding a superbike in a city.
Bikes like the R1200 GS are popular for a reason. While I can understand the purpose of these bikes and would love to have them in my garage, they have no real purpose on the public road.
4Kandlez Oh yea, it's fun to use the performance, and then how would you describe that, if not "riding like a hoon"? I've owned bikes like this in the past yet long ago decided they have no real purpose on the road at all. You can sure ride them on the road of course, just as you can use a hammer to open a can of beans.
i own one of these and have riden em both . keep in mind that both are way too fast to use the power 90% of the time , but the pani , although les then before , will give you a smile even comuting with its awesome grunt and instant throttle . and the guy says the head of the pani is more stable , well i drove r1s since forever and now a duc , but this bike has the least stable head of all of them . not bad for amusement , as it makes you feel like your pushing it like gary McCoy but was that the idea ?
It's all personal preference. I wouldn't buy another Yamaha having had a number of bad experiences with their customer services. The Ducati is more special, and I found the r1 to be a very uncomfortable, throttle felt like a light switch and the brakes were very wooden. Buy what you like guys.
UK on the road prices: Panigale 1299 £16,995 Panigale 1299 S £20,795 Panigale R £28,995 R1 £14,999 R1 M £18,499 ducati never been famous for its cheap price but sorry dude, if u car spare 15k for a motorbike u can also spare 18k...
Bought 1199 in 2013 when it was new, had 3 gasket oil leaks before it hit 10,000kms. Panigale looks like sex on wheels compared to r1, but the Yamaha will never cause you grief. You Buy a Ducati with your heart, buy a Yamaha with your head.
Modern Ducati's aren't as bad as the claims say. I have one and it surprised me how cheap it was to own. It was between this bike and a 929 fire blade and I ended up with the Ducati. For some reason it's cheaper to insure, and the parts are cheaper for the Ducati (at least in my area) The brand new ones you don't even need to take in for your first maintenance check until 18,000 miles. Pretty awesome. Ducati gets a bad reputation.
xjinit Right now I'm at 15,000 ish miles. I know someone with a Monster with over 130,000 miles (from 1997 I think) if you take care of them they last. Especially the oil cooled 2 valve ones from early to mid 2000's with dry clutches. They're just easy to work on and pretty reliable as long as you change oil and belts at the recommended time (oil at 3,000 for me, belts at 2 years)
first off the bmw put more power down then the r1, the r1 is a great but lacks on power to the ducati ....(and i know this cause i own all three..r1m ,s1000r ,1199s abs ,rsv4-rf the real champ)
its like mazda vs ferrari but if i have choicei buy r1 its much better handle and cheap chaging oil plugs etc and could cell easy...ducati s made for rich highclass people who does not ride bike everyday for work...now i had suzuki gsxr and prefered for my opinion
Mark H It will make no difference, fast is dangerous and faster still is about the level of risk! Always buy the fastest and biggest version of what you like!
R1m is nothing in comparision to R1 you moron R1m has 200bhp & r1 has 197 bhp only 3 bhp more than R1 & also R1m top speed is slightly less than R1..better be R1 is best bikes of yamaha still R1->samratbiketech.com/sport-bikes/yamaha/yamaha-yzf-r1/ R1m->samratbiketech.com/sport-bikes/yamaha/yamaha-yzf-r1m/
Vtwins cant make the rpms the inline's can ( well half as many power strokes per given amount of time) also there is less space for more valve area than an inline. Horsepower is a function of rpm and torque. So since the v twin is limited on rpm Its needs to make more torque instead hence bigger engine. It not as efficient as an inline HP wise but makes gobs more torque
of course the Pani "S'' is much more expensive than the base R1... stop complaining about the price difference and compare the base R1 with the base model Pani.
Panigale is drop dead gorgeous...
Yamaha R1 cost £15,000 Ducati cost 27,000. The difference is £12,000 not £5000.
I know LOL I was thinking what? Trying to do the maths.
+Todd Splod So the problem is he doesn't know how to say numbers.
The base model 1299 is 20k...
Alex Johnson he was comparing a 27,000 model, not the base. This video is irrelevant to the base as it has different braking, cornering, and acceleration characteristics; as well as different trick suspension, lightweight wheels, and more powerful motor.

When we are too excited about something, our math skills often drop to a surprising level...😅😅😅
This video was so good…I took notice of Visordown for the first time. Steve just killed it !!!
This is still by far the best one till date.
Update: Ducati has confirmed the fan had failed on the bike we tested, so the 1299 Panigale S wouldn't usually get as hot as ours did.
I love the Panigale. But the fact that a 1000CC bike is even being put up against a 1299CC bike speaks volumes for the R1.
But don't forget, you're comparing a twin to an inline four.

Great honest review.

why test the S version vs the "normal" r1?
"It takes much more of a leap of faith to go down without shutting off than going up"?
I reckon you might have missed the point of, or don't know how best to use an auto blipper.
Quick shifters enables wide open throttle up shifts with no need to clutch or momentarily rolling off the throttle to assist up shifting.
Auto blippers enable clutchless down shifting without need for 'rev matching' right hand throttle blips/inputs while also braking.

Do we have any feedback of the Down Shift on track please ? Is it good ?

+ConTacTzDiddy the new r1 looks unnatural and robotic, and also it doesn't have any characteristics of any previous r1 ,as If yamaha was embarrassed by its predecessors,I loved the near 2004 models. The latest one doesn't look like it has soul.
+Ninad Ganore its called progression. theyve made a road legal gp bike... thats the design. a race ready bike isnt made to be pretty. ride one and youll never say a negative thing again
I'm trying to trade mine in against a HP4, but I can't part with it! Something keeps stopping me!!!
Looks fast: Ducati
Fast: R1
Do dong Yeah....only 146 in the 1/4 mile. Its a mutt. LoL
i love the ducati 1299 panigale s
So one costs double what the other one costs and the more expensive one was the best. Thanks Visordown!
Excellent report. Thanks.
Great review- music was distracting made it hard to hear
Never rode a crossplane in my life, honest question, how is in downshift, the same than a normal? Are vibration the same? I always thought about crossplane as a big complication, like a turbilion in a watch and I am in doubt...
Great video. How do you know so much about both bike's? Do you own both?? Lucky man. lol
should've compared Pani S with R1M
Very informative vid. Thumbs up
Japanese bikes are maintenance free. They run for eternity. Good in gas mileage too. European bikes on contrary demands huge premium to maintain. The engine needs overhaul in less than 3 years. Their fuel efficiency is poor too. Styling is the only advantage for Ducati, otherwise it's the R1 that wins hands down.
not only did you tested a 100 vs a 1299 but you didnt use the R1 m , how is that fair ?
Nice review on the 2nd and 3rd best sports bike RSV4 RF 😎♋️
no one seems to mention that the Ducati needs 300 more CCs to complete the same task. I get that it has 2 cylinders, but 1000cc is 1000cc.
ducati hates that you brought that to peoples attention
did he say the r1 is 14 k and the pani 27 k ? cant be , but what are the prices in england ? in holland the r1 is 20.9 k euro and the pani 1299s is 29,9 k euro . are we paying most again ?
+wasn't me No he said the Pani was £20,795 - he was just sloppy in his language and said Twenty Seven Nine Five, so it sounded like it was 27k
mobit76 owh, is it? well, they're still overpriced in Malaysia. Lol.
Basically, most of us know what a certain power level is going to feel like with a given weight of motorcycle and rider, we don't need dyno numbers, they're pointless.
you are comparing a ducati to a yamaha.... let that sink in... thats like comparing honda to porsche...
+goh kai yeow which is which?
+ShinN EiJiN try putting respectively and you will get the answer ;)
Yammie forever
The S1000RR is astonishing .. like a well dressed UFC fighter.
You've worked out the price difference of these two incorrectly
BIG TIME haha. 12000$ difference
So what would say would be a good bike for every day street riders. Because I'm stuck on what to get between these two
see above
I am a hardcore superbike lover but I've had enough with these bikes. They are fun if you are young and your body can take it but its pointless to put yourself through pain riding a superbike in a city.
go check out a z900
Bikes like the R1200 GS are popular for a reason. While I can understand the purpose of these bikes and would love to have them in my garage, they have no real purpose on the public road.
Sure they do, it's called fun, and I don't mean riding like a hoon.
I like sport bikes on public roads not for excessive speed but corners are really fun, and you can do those without breaking the law.
@@WZW1982 i prefer not breaking bones
i own one of these and have riden em both . keep in mind that both are way too fast to use the power 90% of the time , but the pani , although les then before , will give you a smile even comuting with its awesome grunt and instant throttle . and the guy says the head of the pani is more stable , well i drove r1s since forever and now a duc , but this bike has the least stable head of all of them . not bad for amusement , as it makes you feel like your pushing it like gary McCoy but was that the idea ?
Can't hear the commentary, need to mix the music quieter
St the end of the day r1 one is a good bike but I would pick the penigale any day
It's all personal preference. I wouldn't buy another Yamaha having had a number of bad experiences with their customer services. The Ducati is more special, and I found the r1 to be a very uncomfortable, throttle felt like a light switch and the brakes were very wooden.
Buy what you like guys.
guess we're no longer talking about the old kings. Busa, ZX14
So, 27,000 - 15,000 = 5,000?
Interesting.
Justin R. The r1 is 19.000€
I Love 1299S😃👍
UK on the road prices:
Panigale 1299 £16,995
Panigale 1299 S £20,795
Panigale R £28,995
R1 £14,999
R1 M £18,499
ducati never been famous for its cheap price but sorry dude, if u car spare 15k for a motorbike u can also spare 18k...
uhh link to full review is broken or incomplete
a very updated zx10r is being revealed next month, I think it will kill all as it is sbk based and Kawasaki is currently murdering in sbk.
The r1 got 2hp more than bmw s1000rr my ass . Did you see a dyno result of them both?
That Duke is fucking beautiful
Bought 1199 in 2013 when it was new, had 3 gasket oil leaks before it hit 10,000kms.
Panigale looks like sex on wheels compared to r1, but the Yamaha will never cause you grief.
You Buy a Ducati with your heart, buy a Yamaha with your head.
R1-£14999
Duc 1299 S-£21000 ( Not 27k as he said)
I know what I'm buying!
buy a Yamaha if you want to ride your motorcycle more than 3 times without needing repair.
Modern Ducati's aren't as bad as the claims say. I have one and it surprised me how cheap it was to own. It was between this bike and a 929 fire blade and I ended up with the Ducati. For some reason it's cheaper to insure, and the parts are cheaper for the Ducati (at least in my area)
The brand new ones you don't even need to take in for your first maintenance check until 18,000 miles. Pretty awesome. Ducati gets a bad reputation.
Savage Salvage how many miles are on your Ducati?
Newer Ducati's are a pretty reliable compared to the older one. They're trying to change their rep
xjinit Right now I'm at 15,000 ish miles. I know someone with a Monster with over 130,000 miles (from 1997 I think) if you take care of them they last. Especially the oil cooled 2 valve ones from early to mid 2000's with dry clutches. They're just easy to work on and pretty reliable as long as you change oil and belts at the recommended time (oil at 3,000 for me, belts at 2 years)
Caleb Whitted this "newer Ducati" has a cooling fan failure. Not sure what trying means.
4k 4th gear and expect a lot power maybe 5th at 20
? common don't pull a uber
It worth it to buy it Ducati 1299 more then another motorcycle the look fast and off Corse is made in Italy where the best staff in world is made
like what stuff
£14999 for the R1 and £21950 for the Panigale, i make at almost a £7k difference!
Background noise too loud, can’t hear the guy most of the time
who win ?
Yamaha r1 standard can go 300 km but panigale can't
At the end of the day... my choice would still be the R1..
first off the bmw put more power down then the r1, the r1 is a great but lacks on power to the ducati ....(and i know this cause i own all three..r1m ,s1000r ,1199s abs ,rsv4-rf the real champ)
nice apples to oranges comparison! >:|
its like mazda vs ferrari but if i have choicei buy r1 its much better handle and cheap chaging oil plugs etc and could cell easy...ducati s made for rich highclass people who does not ride bike everyday for work...now i had suzuki gsxr and prefered for my opinion
lol R1 got less power than the S1000rr, they did a official dyno test where the R1 got 192 hp on the rear tyre and the BMW 199 hp, not at the clutch.
Shit test! Should have used the R1m !!!
Mark H
Then borrow one!
Mark H
It will make no difference, fast is dangerous and faster still is about the level of risk! Always buy the fastest and biggest version of what you like!
Mark H
Then I suggest you look at the MT10!
only bimmers can have m badges!!!
R1m is nothing in comparision to R1 you moron R1m has 200bhp & r1 has 197 bhp only 3 bhp more than R1 & also R1m top speed is slightly less than R1..better be R1 is best bikes of yamaha still
R1->samratbiketech.com/sport-bikes/yamaha/yamaha-yzf-r1/
R1m->samratbiketech.com/sport-bikes/yamaha/yamaha-yzf-r1m/
I thought this was a 1000cc class the Ducati is 1300 for fuck sake
+Jason Davies right there with you.. but Ducati has to do anything to beat YAMAHA.. They did beat Yamaha in how much it cost to own one..lol
Anything between 999cc and 1999cc is in the 1000cc category ( sarcasm) 😂😂😂
Vtwins cant make the rpms the inline's can ( well half as many power strokes per given amount of time) also there is less space for more valve area than an inline. Horsepower is a function of rpm and torque. So since the v twin is limited on rpm Its needs to make more torque instead hence bigger engine. It not as efficient as an inline HP wise but makes gobs more torque
which is a good city bike?
None
+Kenneth john motard bro
Kawasaki h2 :)
unicycle
Drive modes do nothing but create more jerkiness
If R1 costs same like Ducati definitely it would be far better than Ducati
of course the Pani "S'' is much more expensive than the base R1... stop complaining about the price difference and compare the base R1 with the base model Pani.
