    Forgot to mention, by far the best video I have seen on TH-cam for Synology DSM V7.0 for Zigbee integration for VMM and Docker. Now if only we could find a solid solutions that actually stays connected. Grrrr

      What stick is that - usually Zigbee sticks don't have problem? Did you maybe try and install drivers for DSM 7? www.jadahl.com/ Not sure if that would help since VMM should use passthrough, but you never know...

    Thank you very much! I'm runing HA as an VMM OVA Image inside a DS718+ (DSM 7) and the Conbee 2 works after I reselect the USB Stick in the VMM configuration.

    For anyone having unreliable Zigbee devices after migrating to Synology: don't plug in the Zigbee stick directly to your NAS, use a USB-A extension cable! This will reduce interference and greatly improve Zigbee reliability.

    • @BeardedTinker
      @BeardedTinker  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great recommendation.
      That's applicable to any Zigbee (or similar) stick on any device - never plug directly, but use extension cable! One of the reasons SkyConnect comes with extension cord.

    Thanks for making the video.
    I have HA and Deconz for my Conbee II stick, running in docker on my DS216+II. I saw some other video people mentioning before upgrading lets check if you have any USB devices in your NAS.
    Saw some people had problems with Conbee II, but already saw some workaround/fixes for the problems (as you mention in your video aswell). It wasn't clear to me, but your video helped me a lot and convinced me to upgrade to DSM 7.

    • @BeardedTinker
      @BeardedTinker  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment! The biggest problem with all this is that there is no way to make roll-back. If it would be possible, it would also be much easier for everyone to test if it's working or not, and if needed roll-back to DSM 6.2

    • @renot67

      I have the same issue. I follow the video (and many others) everything looks great, Synology (DS`1019+) connects the device, then for no reason it drops the USB from within HA. You need to go back into VMM, unmount the stick, then remount the stick before it (sometimes) can be picked up in HA. Many people seem to be having this same issue. I cant determine if the issue resides within VMM (running 2 cores, 4GB RA and 32GB VHD) or HA or its the stick that is causing the issue. Everything is running the latest versions of the software, everything is OK for a period of time and there is no specific trigger that caused the stick to be dropped from HA. Anyone got any ideas?

    • @BeardedTinker
      @BeardedTinker  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is Synology related issue. Unfortunately as far as I know there is still no permanent fix. Some day that it imporved when they connected mains powered USB hub between NAS and stick. I did t see any improvement with only device I have issues with - Google Coral.
      Sonoff 3.0 ZigBee stick, cc2531 and cc2652rb work for me without this issue

  • @GrzegS-nz5mi

    Great video! One question though: does your Zigbee stick work after you restart your Synology without physically plugging it off and in? You mentioned that after typing these commands you had to plug it off and plug it in again and it works only then. What about restart?

    • @BeardedTinker
      @BeardedTinker  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In DSM 7? TBH, I haven't restarted non of my Synology devices for a long long time. If you did insert sh script in control panel scripts, it should run every boot and make device available.
      And you shouldn't need to unplug, but this sometimes help.

    Hello Mr. Tinker, thank you so much for your informative content. Do you know if I can set a static IP of my choice in the VMM, Home Assistant package install? Do it other way around - in VM in HA set static address. It should be easier to set it that way.

      Check this repository for drivers for your type of the machine: github.com/robertklep/dsm7-usb-serial-drivers
      But this also depends if you are suing VMM or Docker. For VMM you shouldn't need those drivers as there is USB pass through.

      First one is using WD RED and second one Toshiba N300 ones. Only louder sound I hear is when there are disk checks going on - and that's every 2 weeks during the night. Besides that, not that much - they are about 6-7m from me right now.

      Definitely makes a huge difference having more ram - disk utilisation having 4gb total and 2gb allocated to VM was sitting at 90-100%, now with 8gb total and 4gb allocated it's at 5% and heaps quieter!

    • @BeardedTinker
      @BeardedTinker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@michaelbreitkreutz6257 yes, RAM makes a big difference overall, but it's very important for VM. Apps on Synology share RAM, while VM has to have dedicated RAM.

    Are you able to advise on using an Aeotec SmartThings hub with HAOS running on a Synology VM? I had assumed by plugging it into the USB on the front (usb3) I'd be able to communicate directly with it but it just keeps showing 'unmounted' in the VMM package (other usb devices such as my Samsung T7 show up without issue) . You could still use USB port in Synology, unless it actually died. But problem is jadahl.com - site with drivers has been down last few months. And those drivers are needed for 6.2 and 7.0 to get stick working. Unless if you use Virtual Machine. Than, you should be able to get it running even without drivers on Synology.

      If you are using 2 USB sticks, problem can be restart of Synology (or any other Linux machine). It are using ttyUSB and not serial name, this is randomised at startup. That's why it's important to use serial name.
      Second problem is USB support on DSM 7. You will probably need to install drivers - try these if they match your hardware www.jadahl.com/
      Overall you are better of using VM as it can access USB sticks directly and it's easier to assigne them to specific app.

      If you can just confirm that you see device ttyACM0 when you ls ttyA* in /dev folder?
      If you do, then you should have no issue of adding it to Docker container with command --device=/dev/ttyACM0
      Other option is to map it:

    @forkless 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm using a CC2531 within the VMM, but I will hold off on upgrading for another half year AT THE VERY LEAST. Synology' trustworthiness took quite a hit this year when they started pulling working BTRFS on unsupported machines as well. USB is still formally unsupported and who knows what they will do. As things are right now everything is working just fine within my VMM and docker containers so I will go with the old "Don't fix it if it ain't broke" adage.

    • @BeardedTinker
