    My suggestion list for running on Synology NAS (they’re all dockers & open source/ free):
    1. ArchiveBox: kind of a self hosted wayback machine. Lets you locally archive a webpage.
    2. Linkding: lightweight bookmark manager with multiple community extensions.
    3. Paperless-ngx: really good document management.
    4. Audiobookshelf: best audiobook/ podcast manager.
    5. Kavita: for reading manga or comics.
    6. Pi-hole: Adblock for your network, if you don’t have any other device to run it on.
    7. Zero tier: for connecting remotely to any docker securely.

    Ok so here we go :) My docker stacks.
    NAS:
    - Sonarr
    - Radarr
    - Jackett
    - Plex
    - Qbittorrent
    - Sabnzbd
    - Bazarr
    - Pihole
    - Linkding
    - Unifi controller
    - Gluetun (to tunnel certain containers through a VPN)
    NUC:
    - SWAG (reverse proxy & certificates)
    - HomeAssistant
    - Influxdb
    - Phoscon (Zigbee network management)
    - Wireguard VPN
    - MQTT broker

    • @peebola
      @peebola 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks, I'd never heard of gluetun, now got it running so certain containers are behind a VPN.
      My most used containers
      Portainer
      Vaultwarden
      Unifi controller
      Openspeedtest
      Rustdesk
      media containers (sonarr, radarr etc) all behind gluetun
      Watchtower (to autoupdate my containers)

    • @Grolnn
      @Grolnn 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@peebola Glad I could help :) I personally dislike Watchtower or any sort of auto updates of docker containers. If there are breaking changes, I'd like to know in advance.

      @@SpaceRexWill Thanks for the honest reply. I have use cases for VMs running on my PCs. Unless I can easily spin up a Docker container running Windows 10 with an app on Synology, probably not going to have a use case for this.

      You and I are in the same camp. The docker images too often tend to be, for lack of a better term, NAS "infrastructure" apps. The problem for most of us is that we don't have the technical skills to turn our favourite apps into docker images. I found that virtual machines are far more useful although not an exact substitute for containers. I do like to watch Will do these videos though because I always learn something even if it confirms that something won't work for me. And his videos are generally so well done. Thanks Will.

      @DavidM2002 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't used either but I did read a blog post from a guy quite recently who had switched from Nextcloud to Syncthing ( I use Syncthing ). His biggest gripe with Nextcloud was the unnecessary complexity and syncing not working for no apparent reason. And then there were the crashes. He seemed to quite like Syncthing after getting it up and running. I looked quite seriously at Synology Drive before installing Syncthing. With Synology Drive, I didn't want to have to reconfigure my NAS to suit that one feature. Syncthing will take a while to sort out but so far, I'm happy with it. It's free and has a great user community.

      Nice! I have not used AdGuard before. Is it just like pihole?

    • @PeterHonig.
      @PeterHonig. ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SpaceRexWill I never used pihol, so I don't know. What it does do is act as a go-between for any DNS queries. In your router, you point to your NAS as your primary DNS server (plus another server as a backup). DHCP then automatically sets this for all hosts on your network transparently.

    • @mindenesvegyes8512
      @mindenesvegyes8512 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SpaceRexWill One of the best feature is DoH (DNS over HTTPS) by design. Really easy to setup, the gui is much more better than pihole and less resource hungry. If you want to make a video about adguard home +1 like guaranteed ;) Thank you for your awesome work.

    Hi Will,
    like always a really nice, good and high quality education video. I really like it ;)
    Questions: Which do you use actual? Like which Synology you are currently running?
    Which Version? Which Cpu ? How much RAM? Which Setting do I need to run Docker Containers or complete Vms on a Synology Drive because i want to buy me a Nas but at the Moment I am not sure what hardware ich need.
    And at least is Qnap until today insecure in opening to the internet because you mentioned it in your video qnap vs. Synology (9 months ago.)
    I would really appreciate if you could help me with a few of my questions ,) Thanks a lot.
    I wish you a nice weekend
    Greetings

    I love the idea of having a UniFi Controller on a NAS. I wouldn't recommend buying a NAS just for that purpose, but for clients who already have a NAS or are buying one anyway, and who also have or are buying UniFi network components, I think it's a better solution than a UniFi Cloud Key Gen2 Plus. The Cloud Key Gen2 Plus contains a hard drive that's supposed to enable it to act as the NVR in an all-UniFi setup that includes surveillance, but the Cloud Key Gen2 Plus's single hard drive strikes me as being inadequate for all but maybe the smallest of systems. A Synology NAS, on the other hand, can be an excellent place to store surveillance camera recordings, and it will work with many more surveillance systems than just UniFi.

    • @SpaceRexWill

      Completely agree, its not a reason to go out and buy one, but its really nice being able to spin one up in like two seconds!

    • @fretbuzzly
      @fretbuzzly ปีที่แล้ว

      Only caveat is that you can only run the Network application and not Protect, Access, Identity, etc. If you don't need those, then it works fine, but if you do then you'll need Ubiquiti hardware unfortunately.
