  • Guess what this video is about? Yes, the Hahnemuhle 100% cotton watercolor book. I didn't think you would have guessed it from the title but you are one slick mamma-jamma, that's the technical term in case you were wondering. I will throw a lot at this book, let's see if it holds up.

    You are such a kind person! I love what you said about not telling people they lost weight. Very sensitive. Love this paper experiment.

      Makes you feel judged, doesn't it? People don't mind being rude. Next time tell them, "yeah but I can lose it, I don't think you can change that face though". Laugh and walk away.

      That's a great idea. It's so much easier to learn on good paper. I had to learn that the hard way. You really did them a huge favor. 👍🏻

    Where do you live? I’m in central Florida and my allergies are over the moon! A couple weeks ago, we actually had globs of yellow pollen plopping down on the hoods of our cars. As far as your opinion on mentioning weight loss… I couldn’t agree more. As a recent cancer survivor, the last thing I wanted to hear about was my weight loss as I was going through chemo! Another great video, Pete. I may try this book. I tried the Etcher cold press book and absolutely hated it, to the point, I cut out about 7 pics that turned out decent and pitched the book. Happy Monday!

      I'm in North Carolina. I have a black car and a white car. Both turn yellow this time of year. I do enjoy the book but it was only the first time I used it. Next I'm going to see how it handles masking fluid. Everyone tells me I'm being ridiculous for my point of view about telling people how they look. I'm sorry you had to go through that.

    In kinda the same vein as not judging people's looks; I get the same thing about not having kids. I'm 35 and people like to let me know I'm running out of time. Ouch. My tubes are tied and I did that on purpose but they dont know that so I always say, in a super sad voice "oh, I can't have kids" and then I enjoy their backpedelling. What if I didn't choose this and wanted kids but couldn't? People are so thoughtless. I appreciate your stance on just not pointing it out. 🙏🏽

    • @IllustrationsByPete
      @IllustrationsByPete  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Becky. You never know what people are going through. It's best to listen to people and react to their circumstances rather than to assume and make them feel worse. Even if you're right it makes them feel like you are judging them just for mentioning it.

      @@IllustrationsByPete Indeed! Interestingly, some plants make sense, geometrically/numerically but then there are some which don't. Have you ever observed the inside of a dragon fruit? The seeds within it seem to be so random whereas you have probably seen how an apple's seeds are encased within a star pattern when you cut them crosswise. Even an orange's segments have a pattern! :D lol Just saying!

    You've stumbled into a garbage vortex! This strange, haunted planet :) They really do seem to be a thing. I walk dogs in lots of neighborhoods and I always find one.. Sometimes it's a yard and I will invariably,evewntually walk by someone cussing as they gather items from the swirling maelstrom of Twinkies wrappers.
    I've been thinking about buying this sketchbook, but your info about the cover made me pause. I think I'bm going to stick with Baohong for now. I'm still exploring lots of different papers, and my favorite so far is the Baohong hot press. I mostly use a lot of cellulose because I'm still learning. I save 100% cotton for special occasion. I also mostly use blocks. I even glue up my pads from Walmart. But I'd like a nice book full of paper I really love. Dream Doodles With Pam has inspired me to stop being so precious with the sketchbooks. I wan a really nice one to abuse.

    • @IllustrationsByPete
      @IllustrationsByPete  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation. I know it's more expensive but the watercolor acts so differently on cotton than it does on cellulose that the only way to learn a lot of techniques is by using and wasting cotton paper. As a matter of fact different cotton papers even act so differently that even if you learn to use one very well, another one may not work at all for your technique. I'm going to do a video explaining all this soon.

    😂 I never woulda pegged you for being 'that guy' that mows the lawn on the last day of winter!!! The guy across the street from me mows his lawn well into November when the grass has actually for real gone into hibernation. I really get a kick outta him during Summer because he mows EVERY SINGLE WEEK and he has a vast array of gardening gadgets which when implemented give him an air of some sorta science-fiction character kinda like the spacesuits in ALIEN... Sometimes, I get the urge to secretly film him and add sci-fi music over the video but I don't 'cause I'd probably get caught somehow and arrested... I don't need to go back in the pokey again! Oh, and as to the paper that you're reviewing today I also enjoy the sublime quality that you've encountered using it thus far... It is "MAD DOPE YO!!!" and I wish you a happy season to you and yours - ED 🕺

    • @IllustrationsByPete
      @IllustrationsByPete  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lol. No, I mow the lawn when my shoe gets caught as I walk across it. More like every 2-3 weeks depending on how much it rains. I would love to see pictures of those gadgets. I don't have many myself but I've seen some crazy stuff out there. I hate yardwork. I think because I had to do it so much as a kid, not just for my house. I used to do work at my house, both grandparents yards, an uncle's yard, and a friends yard on occasion. I would rather do anything else, except indoor painting. That is worse. So painting is both my favorite and most hated thing to do depending on context. Had fun with this book though. Very "dope".

    I also use this book and I really enjoy it. 👍 interesting painting/drawing/art piece that you created. It's relaxing looking at you how you built up layers and texture 🫠 that insider thing I didn't get it, what should I comment when I noticed that you've repeated something? I mean you said many times before in other videos, that you might repeat yourself 🤪 kind regards.

    • @IllustrationsByPete
      @IllustrationsByPete  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lol. It would be the exact or nearly the exact same paragraph explaining that I will do this in the future, and you would post "and on 2" if you thought it was the second time you've heard it. Like repeating yourself "on and on and on". I have to go back and see how many times I've actually done it. I lost track myself. I used to do that in the first year I was making videos but I haven't done it in at least a year. After everyone guesses, or if anyone guesses, I will pose a result at the end of the week. I always end up repeating myself but that is unintentional. 😂

    🤣😆😂I have the same pet peeve about reviews. 😊😁The stupidest review 😏was on a block of Baohong watercolor paper actually. Two different people gave a 1 star review because😳 "there was glue all over the edges of the paper, 🙄or There is glue all over this, On all the sides of the paper!" 🤔😯 I couldn't believe they were so foolish as to buy a BLOCK of paper and complain that it was properly glued! 🥺😳
    🤠 I bought it and it is great paper & yes, it is PROPERLY glued on all sides.🤓

    On Amazon ratings, I hate it when someone gives a book 1 star because they hated the cover or the book was too heavy. That’s not what you need to read, you need to know if it gives you the info you were looking for or if the story was exciting or eye-opening or something! If I needed something heavy for a doorstop, I could use my Shorter OED… well no, I have better uses for that. But I wouldn’t need to know a book was too heavy! **sheesh* On the fun side, I just got a Hahnemühle 100% cotton sketchbook on a giveaway, sponsor of Danny Gregory’s Draw With Me classes (they give something away every week if you write in and show your week’s “art”. Mine was pretty sketchy, but it’s fun to do and I am learning a little about fast sketching and filling in later! The paper is lovely, as you said, and versatile, too!

    Thanks for reminding me of this book. I had one still in the wrapper, forgot about it. I've been comparing different sketchbooks to take with me while on vacation. After trying it I'd say there is nothing wrong with it, but it may be my least favorite from what I've tried so far. I think I'd like to see it with more texture. Have you used Khadi yet? They aren't constructed well, but the paper is unique and the colors look more vibrant than some other books. Surprisingly, I liked how the paint reacted best on the Strathmore art journal, 400 series. Still undecided, guess I'll just grab one on my way out the door. LOL

    • @IllustrationsByPete
      @IllustrationsByPete  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have not tried Khadi yet but the look of their sketchbooks is really cool. I love how they leave the deckled edges. I would grab the book you were most familiar with so you can get a predictable result and not get frustrated while you are trying to relax on vacation. I hope you have fun!
