I was so happy to meet you ! And for the S9, as a Lumix user, coming from travel and who likes everyday family portrait, I just love this tiny caméra !
I'll be a Sony shooter for a long time to come, but I love what Panasonic and Lumix are doing in the last couple years. The improvement in their AF is huge. Their colors and log profile were always great, then they added anamorphic and LUTs in camera with open gate, and now the AF is usable for professional event coverage. Love the competition!
@@Pablomache I don't mean the S9 for events. You'd be insane to try and use something with record limits for event coverage. I was talking more generally about Lumix. Their full size mirrorless cameras meant for video use are awesome options for event coverage with the newest version of AF.

Great review! You focused in on a lot of great points. I can’t help though disagree a little with the lens - the fact there’s a physically small option like this is super great. With focus peaking on, the fact it’s f8 will mean it’s SO fast to get photos on the street. You’re basically just zone focusing with it
This camera has way better IBIS, shutter angle, frame markers, waveform, and the new LUT and hybrid Zoom. The A7C ii is awesome, but that doesn’t make the S9 trash… specially for the price, it’s $700 dollars cheaper, that is 32% different in cost, very significant
@@atsmusic_de The Sony A7C II is 514g including battery and memory card ,or 429g without. The Lumix S9 is 486g including battery and memory card, or 403g without. The difference is only +28g, which is worth it for an EVF and weather sealing. The almost essential SmallRig L-Shape Handle, which I believe is an official S9 accessory, adds 50g but is still less ergonomic than the A7C II, but overall heavier.
I do love the video. One of the better day 1 reviews I've watched. I appreciate the time involved here, lots of great info! But one request I have is to do a realistic autofocus test. I have no idea where the "walk forward and backwards" tests came from, or why everyone thinks that's sufficient to demonstrate autofocus, but it's useless. I'm not worried about how it handles when there's one human in a clean environment. Obviously it'll be fine. I want to see how it reacts when there's multiple humans, or backs of heads, also in frame. I want to see how it handles when you're moving the camera too. I want to see what happens when you do a dolly movement with something in the foreground. I want to see how it handles when you pan left to right, and your subject comes into frame halfway through. Real tests, with different settings. Show me how it works in the real world. Wouldn't be saying this if it wasn't obvious you care about making helpful informative videos. Thanks!
Thank you! To answer why we do the AF tests the way we do. Our method is able to show both how fast AF can acquire and reacquire AF and whether it can continuously keep AF accurate. We show a small section but we do this for much longer. The AF tests are also able to confirm or deny our opinion of the AF system pre doing the tests. Everyone uses cameras differently so it’s not possible to explore every scenario in 1 review video, that’s why we continue using every camera post review and upload more videos, especially at portrait photoshoots where critical focus is so important. We’ll have plenty more videos showing more AF performance in the future.
I gotta say, I see this as a full frame option for the Ricoh GR line that you can change lenses with and actually does video and has a flip out screen. Ricoh is small, fixed screen, terrible video and only slightly smaller with terrible battery life. SO I am almost certain that there will be a huge audience for this camera considering the legions of GR fans out there with similar camera limitations that still love that system.
This camera is definitely not for you when you are complaining about the missing grip. This camera is for me, who loves soapbox design, just like Leica does for decades.
I like how they try to make the camera body as small as it can be.. even taking away viewfinder and grip etc.. Maybe to some people its a no.. but I think it's ok. Not every camera need to look or be the same. Buy what you want. Ignore what you dont want.
I agree with this! They have other cameras in their lineup with a viewfinder and grip. The S5II is a great camera to travel with for example if you want those things imo
Such a fantastic camera. Banding in any darker scenerio because of the missing shutter and so useful without an EVF when you're out in bright sunlight. Thats really the best camera I could think of for travel. 🙃
Well ive used my s5 and now s5iix extensively outdoors, mostly using the screen rather than evf, and u could always use a sunhood for the screen momentarily if needed.
Looks cool nice specs,too.. not wearing a strap while shooting makes me very nervous! I dropped my Mirrorless cam 2 years ago..wore a Sling ever since! 😁😅
Great review Julia! It was also great chatting with you briefly in Osaka (I was the tall guy with no voice 🙃). Hope to see you again at a future event!
Not sure why they can't include a mechanical shutter. I could see so many brandings .__. ( Even my old G7X III has a mechanical shutter along with electronic shutter )
To answer your question, there is a big difference in size + design between full frame mechanical shutters in interchangeable lens cameras and leaf shutters within the lens element of fixed lens camera series like RX100, x100 and g7x etc.
Panasonic does not appear to have a full range of lenses specially F1.4 or F1.2 primes I think this is where Sigma will complement the Panasonic cameras. Sigma has an extensive range of DG DN primes/zooms and also compact DG contemporary lenses F2 lenses. the S9 is a nice camera but missing the viewfinder can be a problem because I often find myself using the viewfinder under bright sun when it is almost impossible to shoot using the LCD.
Did Panasonic mention anything about developing/offering an electronic EVF in the future? (in the mould of what Canon did for the EOS M6 way way back...)
@@juliatrotti Would have been surprised if they had, to be honest (and I mean an EVF that can be mounted on the hotshoe). Ultimately, this camera is almost too weird considering how big the lenses could get, but it's quite impressive that Panasonic could put something in that small package and with a pricing that competes with the likes of the APS-C Sony a6700 (which also almost doesn't have an EVF lol).
Love that there making some cool advancements. My only wish if they would have opt'd for the tilt screen versus a flip-out screen. More stealth for photographers.
Exactly every camera without a up & town tilt is nothing more than E-Waste in the eyes of "Photographers". This is why Sony debuted the 4-axis screen on the A7RV...There would of been a mutiny if they crippled the Landscape body for Landscape Photographers
I love Julia but this cameras pictures and video looks worse than an apsc camera. Like what is this? Hd video with over sampled 4k? This camera is all hype. Compared to the Canon R8 the S9 gets ruthlessly destroyed. There are so many other cameras with much more features that should garner more attention. Im sorry but no experienced photographer or videographer would be excited to use this camera. For the price this camera is not even close to worth it. Love Julia and her channel but this video is hard to watch.
My initial thought, but it’s larger than the Sony A7c II, which has a VF. If it would be slightly(!) larger and heavier than the Ricoh, but FF and ICL, it would be great, but it isn’t.
Unless you are using primes the Panasonic lenses are pretty big. I would totally get this but how can I carry my 24-105 or 24-70 with this? The other think is I hate camera with no grip. Cool camera but not for me.
apparently they plan on releasing a compact 18-40mm later this year, which should pair nicely. But yep, if the camera isn't for you it's not for you. Personally I'm just happy for the extra reason for more compact L-mount lenses that I can pair with my fp-L.
@@aleksivahapassi I've seen that grip but it doesn't look like it adds much. A lot of the photos show that your camera is still resting on your pinky finger. I've been there and done that. It's uncomfortable.
The second this video comes on...if I had to take a guess, I'd guess that it was shot w/ a SONY.. I mean, everything is green. The environment, the skintone, the camera, I mean all of it.
Yes, I didn’t though since I don’t have access to raws yet and I want to show colours sooc for my review. So need those clean jpgs. You can also edit in camera to have both but I had too many other things to test for my review
looks cool...but you could just slap a skin over it and you would achieve the same result. The omission of a white body for the female demo is appalling and shows Panasonic is not one of the sharpest tools in the shed
wtf where’s the integrity of all these so called influencers/youtuber. The camera is a turd, (no hot shoe, no evf, ridiculous recording times even for short form content, awful ergonomics, stupid control wheel, complicated lut system thanks to Panasonic menus, no jack to monitor audio levels, and the worst offender: no mechanical shutter for photography when it costs nothing and your camera sensor has awful rolling shutter)
A lot of these things you’ve mentioned here are subjective and are pros and cons depending on your personal preference and intended use of the camera. You might think some of these things are rubbish and the next person might be more than fine with these specs. I need to keep this in mind when reviewing gear, not every camera made is intended for professional use and I need to treat it for the intended market which I talked about in my video.
@@juliatrotti subjective?: lack of mechanical shutter and a slow sensor is horrible to photograph moving subjects (equivalent to shooting at 1/40sec), 10mins recording limit in 6k 15mins for 4K , imagine you’re shooting a tik tok dance and you need to do several takes cause someone screwed up but your camera decides to overheat!), ergonomics; it’s a brick with no grip and a function wheel that gets easily pressed accidentally (ask kai), no evf (I get it! The younger demographic doesn’t use it but good luck framing your subject in bright daylight with such screen). Anyways sales will tell the story after all.
@@jaegerschtulmann its a 10/15 min file limit for video. As soon as it stops, you can start a recording right away straight after. I don't think that's a huge inconvenience? Ergonomics again is subjective. I think it's uncomfortable to hold for long periods of time like I said in my video, but the next person might be perfectly fine with it
@@juliatrotti I agree with you on the time limit, and concede on the ergos being subjective, the absence of mechanical shutter however, is baffling. City photography at night is ultra challenging due to banding from LED lights, Pany could have easily included one as even budget cameras have them. The best thing this camera has going for is the LUTS ecosystem and video features, I just can't help to think it's a half baked product. Cheers.
26mm F8 manual focus lens is a joke. I have the Panasonic 14mm f2.5 Micro Four Thirds lens and that's auto focus. Also I have the Fuji 27mm f2.8 lens so I don't see why they could not have made a full frame auto focus lens.
Almost every camera released has limitations. But most NEW released FF cameras these days are easily going to be costing over $2000 in US dollars. Yet you can bet that most won't have Open Gate and or some of the other nice feature this camera has. This notion that this camera can't be used professionally because of the Time Limits is a false one. Folks have used far less. So the Gear Don't Matter Crowd have all of a Sudden decide that GEAR does matter. How convenient. Also, everyone should know how to manual focus a Lens.
This thing could have been so great but there are so many things missing. You could argue about the lack of an EVF because it benefits the small form factor. But no real shutter?! Just electronic. And not even a damn hot shoe?!
No viewfinder I think really sucks. They could have made one that you attach to the hotshoe. Also you can buy a loop that goes over the LCD screen. A lot of the filmmakers back in the DSLR filmmaking days used them.
The release of this camera really shine light on how shallow many people are as it relates to products and there intended purposes....if its notnfor you just leave it alone ..🙄
Honestly though a lot of content nowadays is no more than a minute long anymore, so this is only an issue depending on what your intended use with the camera is 🤷♀️
@@PerfectCodeyes maybe they will! I also have noticed some misconception around the recording limit that it overheats at 10 minutes which it does not. As soon as it hits the 10/15 min file limit, you can press record again right after. So just clearing that up in case anyone else is reading through the comments!
This is a crappy product. When coupled with a lens it’s not so much smaller than s5II, but lacks so many things like evf, weather sealing, headphone jack etc. And it costs almost like s5II. Panny people, go back to the drawing board. This is a major fail.
When you’re filming somewhere where a lot of green is present (which is apparent in that shot) you can expect a green color cast from light bouncing off the greenery.

That lens man. I just have laugh it off. A F8 PRIME. That`s defining the word stupid in a completely different way.
Toy camera. No sale.
One Thousandth like on this video, LOl!
This will be the new Ricoh for street photographers i think
My initial thought, but it’s larger than the Sony A7c II, which has a VF. If it would be slightly(!) larger and heavier than the Ricoh, but FF and ICL, it would be great, but it isn’t.
The lack of a viewfinder is extremely disappointing. If they want to compete with Fuji and Leica, they are gonna have to try harder.
Is there not a risk of warping if using electronic shutter or is that a thing of the past?
DaVinci Resolve has a great video stabilizer function if you input lens data, but otherwise it’s still a risk for stills
There is a smallrig grip some other reviewer used and said was great. So u have that option.
@@aleksivahapassi I've seen that grip but it doesn't look like it adds much. A lot of the photos show that your camera is still resting on your pinky finger. I've been there and done that. It's uncomfortable.
Geraldundone would be pleased! Great review as always. Greetings from Sydney :)
Huh?
The second this video comes on...if I had to take a guess, I'd guess that it was shot w/ a SONY.. I mean, everything is green. The environment, the skintone, the camera, I mean all of it.
Nah it was shot on the LUMIX S5iiX, but yeah it was a very green location! The way I like it hahah
Mix is surprisingly decent
Full frame! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
When 90% of LUMIX S9 review videos are produced 2 months ago...
finally someone talking about this!
Could you have put the disposable film preset straight into camera?
Yes, I didn’t though since I don’t have access to raws yet and I want to show colours sooc for my review. So need those clean jpgs. You can also edit in camera to have both but I had too many other things to test for my review
pls Panasonic next S9II with VF, i will join the club
Pierre T. Lambert was there!
I'm all about that green too😎
looks cool...but you could just slap a skin over it and you would achieve the same result. The omission of a white body for the female demo is appalling and shows Panasonic is not one of the sharpest tools in the shed
Green is the way! 🙌🏻
Green hands down! Easy choice 😄
Wish we got to hangout more! Next time let’s setup some test shoots 🔥
Me too, next time!!
Internal audio is not bad.
I assume Panasonic paid for your travel? I must have missed you disclosing that in the video...
Yes and I state so in the video.
wtf where’s the integrity of all these so called influencers/youtuber.
Cheers.
Hi guys, what better to buy , that camera or Sony 7c?
Die Sony. Allein schon deswegen, weil gefühlt jeder TH-camr eingeladen wurde und eine Kamera geschenkt bekommen hat. Schon sehr nervig.
13:22 same old pulsing, pana....
Yes , can't rival sony or canon af
26mm F8 manual focus lens is a joke. I have the Panasonic 14mm f2.5 Micro Four Thirds lens and that's auto focus. Also I have the Fuji 27mm f2.8 lens so I don't see why they could not have made a full frame auto focus lens.
Great video
Thank you!
so nice Japan😍🤩
And not even a damn hot shoe?!
no White Body option for female demographic
No viewfinder I think really sucks. They could have made one that you attach to the hotshoe. Also you can buy a loop that goes over the LCD screen. A lot of the filmmakers back in the DSLR filmmaking days used them.
Hdmi to headphone jack dongle for monitoring
record limit.. deal breaker.
The idea is good but I think it's been stripped down a bit too much.
You visited Osaka.
The release of this camera really shine light on how shallow many people are as it relates to products and there intended purposes....if its notnfor you just leave it alone ..🙄
6:30 Noise detected on top of a Chinese flashlight
4K60 HDR? If not, it’s of no use.
Beautiful julia trotti
Such video limits in 2024. OMG, Panasonic, what are you doin'?
Honestly though a lot of content nowadays is no more than a minute long anymore, so this is only an issue depending on what your intended use with the camera is 🤷♀️
I could potentially see software updates to the S9 giving users more flexibility to the recording time. Hopefully. 🤞
@@PerfectCodeyes maybe they will! I also have noticed some misconception around the recording limit that it overheats at 10 minutes which it does not. As soon as it hits the 10/15 min file limit, you can press record again right after. So just clearing that up in case anyone else is reading through the comments!
a7cii is better and a7c is more complete... why i buy this camera?...
This is a crappy product. When coupled with a lens it’s not so much smaller than s5II, but lacks so many things like evf, weather sealing, headphone jack etc. And it costs almost like s5II. Panny people, go back to the drawing board. This is a major fail.
Is the colours a stylistic choice? Or is it making skin tones green? 9:36
When you’re filming somewhere where a lot of green is present (which is apparent in that shot) you can expect a green color cast from light bouncing off the greenery.
@@DylanBlackburn ah okay thanks
Sony colour science…
