Best Multitool Ever : Victorinox Swisstool Spirit, a must have !

  • La seule façon d'amener les Charge ou Surge au niveau d'excellence du Swisstool Spirit est d'y adjoindre une clé à cliquet à œil compacte.
    Voir ici : Leatherman Upgrade (Standard Bit & Ratchet) : • Leatherman Upgrade (St... .

    I got this multitool and it is really nice, high quality all around, got it as a gift.
    Great attention to detail, even with the leather sheath it came in was s super high quality (although I like snap rather than velcro).
    I personally think they should have incorporated a combined serrated blade with a pointy end.
    As much as I like the butter knife I think an edged tool is better overall.

    Hi. When (at 1'57'') you insert the bit in the ratchet hole is there a mechanism to block the bit or it is free to exit from the other side of the ratchet hole? I ask this because if no block mechanism is provided, you can't use the ratchet ro unscrew tighten screws.
    Thanks.
    PS as far as you know does exist a cheaper tool like the the Victorinox ratchet + the extension bar?

    • @diezelle57
      @diezelle57  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello.
      Good point.
      By applying a great vertical force on the bit, it will come out of the eye but:
      - when the bit is inserted, its base protrudes from the other side of the eye, allowing a finger to be placed on this base to apply a vertical force; the bit will then be held securely,
      - it is rarely necessary to apply a large vertical force to a ratchet.
      Yes, of course, you can use a mini ratchet that you will find in screw boxes; example: www.amazon.fr/Bosch-2607017160-Coffret-cliquet-pi%C3%A8ces/dp/B0071IK9CI/ref=sr_1_16?__mk_fr_FR=%C3%85M%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&crid=1Z8ELNZOPE1M4&keywords=bosh+coffret+de+screw&qid=1555515271&s=gateway&sprefix=bosh+coffret+%2Caps%2C466&sr=8-16
      Box in which you will certainly find an extender.

    • @Alphex87
      @Alphex87 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@diezelle57 many thanks. In effect vertical force is intended only for hard tighten flat/phillips screws, that are not tipically what a wrench ratchet is made for. This ratchet is good for allen and other stuff that must be screwed/unscrewed horizontally.
      Unfortunately the ratchet you linked is not similar to Victorinox, that seems really solid, narrow, essential, and extremely mobile with his bit holder integrated, but versatile, thanks to the second 1/4" side that can be used for the extension bar. Right now the most similar ratchet to the Victorinox one tha i have found is the Topeak rocket (not sure its a standard 1/4 bit), that unfortunately is priced really close to Victorinox, and not so compact (his case cannot be inserted in a multi tool sheath). Thus the search continue….
      Ps after seeing your Workpro 16in1 MT review, i decided to buy my first multi tool. Maybe the next could be the Surge (that was the one i wanted to buy, but i'm not yet ready to spend about 130€ for my first MT). The only core feature (that i will really miss) i don't like in the workpro, compared to LT Surge , is the lack of versatility (replaceable saw file and bits).
      Now i must find the right ratchet + bit holder and an adjustable (in rotation) sheath.
      Thanks again.

    • @diezelle57
      @diezelle57  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Alphex87 Thanks also to you :)
      Any mini ratchet eye can advantageously replace (in price and held bits (no problem in vertical effort)) Victorinox ratchet which, I report, is too long to be housed in a leatherman sheath. An eye because then, in addition to standard bits, we can insert the truncated bits of Leatherman.
      If you want to buy a very inexpensive multi-tool, I recommend the GERBER Suspension-NXT or the GERBER Truss or the GANZO G302, the Worpro 16-in-1 was really too heavy and cumbersome.

      The Victorinox bit kit is never completely filled to allow users to choose the bits they need in addition to those offered. These are standard bits so no problem to get them.

    Good review If you were to compete the Spirit of Victorinox vs the Wave Plus of Leatherman and considering the function of the pliers, which would you choose? I have some Leatherman multi-tools (Wave Plus, Wave, Rebar, Mircra, Squirt ps4) and only one Gerber the old mp600 version. I really like this Spirit that you present and for that reason I would like your opinion.
    Thank you.

      @diezelle57  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks :)
      I would compare the Wave⊕ to the Spirit Plus (so with accessories): the Spirit Plus is better adapted to different types of situations... because of the multi-tool/ratchet decoupling.
      But I have shown in other videos that you can add a mini-ratchet to the Wave using a Leatherman sheath (4 or 5 pockets).
      Of course, the Spirit has no removable cutting inserts which is a handicap... that can cost a lot of money if you mess up your cable cutter.
      I add that the Spirit is not removable and that spare parts for the Wave can be found, on eBay for example.
      So, a Wave⊕ - properly equipped - seems preferable to Spirit Plus.

    I’m trying to decide right now what multi tool to buy. I have a leatherman blast and it has held up great but I want something I little different. So far I’ve had my mind made up on the Wave but now I’m not so sure. Any advice would be appreciated!

    • @diezelle57
      @diezelle57  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can do in the expensive, kind Leatherman Charge TTI or Victorinox Swistool Spirit. Otherwise, the Leatherman Charge is very functional and solid. But your choice must be related to certain usage considerations. If the weight does not bother you, the leatherman Surge would be an excellent choice.

      diezelle57 thanks for the help, I appreciate it! Weight does not not bother me at this point. Just want a good solid tool to last through me beating it up! I like your vids bud. Keep it up!

      luke montgomery I have had a Wave for over 20 years and thrashed it and it still all works if that’s any help. There are so many good ones now. I want a Surge now as well after spending most of the day looking into it. This Victorinox is pretty smart as well but I still want a Surge.

    Is this multitool rust resistant or rustproof? For someone who lives near the Ocean and does water activities?

    • @diezelle57
      @diezelle57  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, very corrosion resistant. But not totally, it's not H1 steel (Spyderco). So it is advisable to maintain your tool after contact with water or salt water.

    j'ai un gerber suspension, et un leatherman ps4, je cherche plus "grand", sans partir sur le surge, et enormement de tres bon retours sur le spirit, je pense investir sur lui
    j'ai beaucoup hésité avec le surge, et les dernier leatherman a aimant ouverture facile
    mais des retours d'experiences de gros "brico" apres plusieurs années sur le spirit, sont vraiment tres bons
    je te rejoins sur le coupe cable remplaçable, pour ceux qui s'en servent beaucoup, et un petit porte embout dans la pince serait un plus (pour eviter de trimbaler tout le temps, tout l’attirail)

    For the money, the flathead screwdriver tips should be ground square. A small detail the owner can do, however. Also a removeable pocket clip like the leatherman has, would be nice. I Did not see the main blade?

    • @diezelle57
      @diezelle57  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The knife blade (6 'on the video) is a blade (serrated) without point to meet European legislation. There is a version of the Spirit that has a point and unserrated blade : SwissTool Spirit X : www.victorinox.com/global/fr/Produits/Couteaux-dofficier-suisse/SwissTools/SwissTool-Spirit-X/p/3.0224.L .
      "the flathead screwdriver tips should be ground square" = ???

    Good review! Most unfortunate that the XC is no longer being produced...its blade & chisel-wire stripping tool is a unique combination...as you know, the Swisstool X does not have the tip that cuts on the chisel-wire stripping tool that the XC & the spirit X have...however, the Swisstool X has better scissors, imho....thanks!

    • @greekveteran2715
      @greekveteran2715 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can add the Victorinox Explorer to your edc system, if you edc the Spirit X already! It not only provides THE best scissors, but also adds all the tools the Spirit X misses plus 2 more blades, both thinner and one smaller, to add to the versatility and back up,since these dull rather quick!! Just check them side by side, to see what the Explorer adds! It makes THE perfect Victorinox edc combo!

    I dont know about other type, but my Victorinox Thinker's n hiker's blade is so easy 2 scratchs, easy 2 get dull. I use Victorinox sharpener (looks like plastic pen. With 2 function). And that quiet disappoint me. Thats why im on my way to purchasing Leathermans 😁

    Which is better: Swiss Tool Spirit X or Swiss Tool Spirit XBS?
    In terms of build quality can they be considered equal?
    After more than 4 years do you still think it is the "BEST MULTITOOL EVER"? If not, which would be the absolute best new one or which one comes close to it?

      Une lampe de poche s'avère très utile, évidemment. D'ailleurs, les étuis Leatherman comprennent deux poches latérales, une pour le prolongateur et l'autre pour une mini-torche LED. Ma petite lampe LED avec sa pile AAA pèse 22 grammes. Pour votre information :
      - Leatherman Charge⊕ TTI + étui + prolongateur + mini-torche LED + clip de ceinture + bit kit + anneau amovible : 384 grammes,
      - Victorinox Swisstool Plus (donc avec les accessoires et l'étui) : 443 grammes,
      - Victorinox Swisstool Spirit Plus (donc avec les accessoires et l'étui) : 373 grammes.

    • @the_real_stevie_t

      So add 22 grams to each of your Victorinox tools, and they both outweigh the leatherman.

    You mention the Swiss tool is better than the Leatherman. How so? I have looked the Victrinox over and in comparison it is not as practical as it's American competitor. The pliers themselves are not as good. Needle nose should come to a relatively fine point. Hard to do intricate repairs without this feature. The stubby nose pliers of swiss tools are indeed stronger because less leverage can be applied to the jaws by outside forces and break them. Has nothing to do with metallurgy. I already carry a pocket ratchet of superior quality to the one supplied with your Victrinox. It has two reversible ratchet heads and accepts 1/4" bits. If I break it. Which I haven't I can exchange it locally for a replacement. Separate tools from the multi-tool do not count as "plus mode". It's separate from the multi-tool itself. The fact the sheath has it included and it's there is obviously very nice.
    Victrinox has a nice warranty for USA customers. Lifetime warranty. Haven't heard a mention of actual customer service. I have seen and heard where Leatherman has excellent customer service.
    You mention that it's silly to have to take a tool apart to clean it or that Victrinox tolerances are so tight. Sand and debris cannot work their way in. This is a lie. If there is a void at all. Dust will work it's way in.
    Leathermans can be disassembled by the owner. This allows them to be modified or accessorized. This ability to swap components with other tools in the product line or order up parts from the internet and customize the tool makes it superior. No the Leatherman is not tumble polished like the Victrinox and it's not as shiny. It's still a quality product and as a product of the USA and me being an American. I may be more inclined to like it over the Victrinox. Doesn't mean I didn't consider it.
    I own more tools than a majority of men. I love quality. I also love being able to service my own tools rather than send them in for service. I don't trust even leatherman to care for my tool as I do. So I like that I can tighten and adjust most leathermans with safety torx or torx bits. Aside from the super tool 300 or the Rebar. They have custom Leatherman fasteners that require either fine tooth needle nose to tighten or the special tool Leatherman has for proper disassembly without harming the finish of the tool. For this small feature alone I consider the Leatherman to be superior to Victrinox. Leatherman gives you more products to review on your channel which is your bread and butter anyway so that is another point to consider. Another thing I should add. Victrinox doesn't sell as many multi tools. So there are less people out there abusing them. Which means their failure rate is going to be much lower. I have never broken a leatherman. The ones I have seen broken were used for a task that should never have been asked it in the first place. It was unreasonable. I imagine Victrinox users are not only rare but they have more common sense and aren't being abused by the idiots that get ahold of Leathermans. That said, if Victrinox started to sell as many multi tools as Leatherman or Gerber I am certain they would likely decrease their Warranty from Lifetime to 25 years or less.
    Victrinox doesn't have 154 CM replaceable cutters in their plier head. Not that I hold it against the Victrinox for not offering it. Not many people damage their wire cutters I am sure. I damaged mine a bit on my SOG powerlocks so when I bought Leathermans I purchased this feature. I am a perfectionist so those damaged cutters bug me. I even meticulously honed the cutting edge of those wire cutters to reduce the deformation in the cutter and restore smooth operation.
    I rotate my tools often. My go-to is my Super Tool 300 in a Maxpedition holster since I wore my original Leather and Nylon sheath to the point where the multi-tool was falling out onto the ground.
    I am always looking to upgrade my EDC so I can tackle any problem thrown my way. I solve a lot of problems. So I look to channels like this one to see what is out there.
    Keep up the good work. It's relaxing not having music or narration.

    • @diezelle57
      @diezelle57  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you for your analysis.
      With regard to the riveted assembly of Swisstool, I would like to mention the Leatherman JUICE. Riveting does not prevent the object from being properly cleaned. You may have noticed that the steels used by Victorinox hardly rust, unlike those used by Leatherman.
      As regards the possibility of changing tools (inadequate or broken) on screwed assemblies, SOG offers the most freedom in this respect since it offers tools for sale, whereas for Leatherman's multi-tools, it is necessary to rely on a parallel market where the sale of new spare parts pays more than the sale of the object itself.
      The profile of the pliers... Frankly, a short, massive pliers will be more useful on a construction site than a tapered clamp: for example, a Gerber MP600 Bluntnose will provide useful services (tearing, bending, etc.) than a Leatherman: on the Swisstool, we find a pliers with an intermediate profile.
      Your argument that Leatherman has a higher number of broken pliers cases than Victorinox because of the difference in sales of these companies' multi-tools, why not, but I see it as the reason for the greater robustness of the Swisstool pliers.
      As you know, I own 67 models of Leatherman multi-tools and I am not one of those who criticize this extraordinary and innovative brand. I am much more critical of SOG and Gerber.
      The Swisstool Spirit is of extraordinary quality and brilliant design. But, as I often say, I criticize Victorinox for not wanting to develop its range of multifunctional pliers. It was Victorinox who introduced a decoupled set, with its PLUS models, a remarkable idea that led me to want to adapt it to the Leatherman by associating them with a mini ratchet, ideally of the WERA brand.

      @@diezelle57 regarding this, I must contradict you ... I bought a victorinox spirit, or rather 2, because of the excellent qualities I was reading about. after 3 months of testing and use in cutting cables, in parallel to the leatherman surge I must say that even the victorinox pliers take that half a millimeter of play like the leatherman. That said, the victorinox swisstool are exceptional. I don't think it's superior to the top of the leatherman range in an absolute sense. each has pros and cons.
      victorinox:
      -better finished
      - tools perfectly designed for use -perfect handle / clamp locking mechanism, better then leatherman. Leatherman:
      -one hand acces, that is indispensable for me
      - much superior cable cutter for precision work much
      -more robust handles (in the spirit, the instruments immediately have a play or lateral flexibility due to the weakness of the pins / handles ... even when using a screwdriver or awl, the handles move a lot in torsion)
      -portabit
      -main blade and serrated blade evidently superior
      -diamond file.
      in conclusion, the victorinox swisstool, spirit and the leatherman surge / wave / charge are multitools of equal and excellent quality ... possibly to have all!

    La seule façon d'amener les Charge ou Surge au niveau d'excellence du Swisstool Spirit est d'y adjoindre une clé à cliquet à œil compacte.
    Voir ici : Leatherman Upgrade (Standard Bit & Ratchet) : www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2p0c....
    Et encore, le Swisstool Spirit :
    - est moins lourd, plus compact, plus stylé,
    - présente une facilité de déploiement des outils incomparable; on n'est pas dans le cassage d'ongle, dans le déploiement de plusieurs outils à la fois, on est dans le soyeux, le jouissif !
    Il est regrettable, c'est un message que j'envoie à l'attention de Victorinox, que ce fabriquant se contente des deux modèles de pince multifonction qu'il propose, le Swisstool et le Swisstool Spirit.
    Pourquoi pas des modèles comme le Gerber Dime ou le Leatherman Squirt PS4, hein ?
    Il faudrait aussi songer à implanter, dans les Swisstool, un coupe-câble à plaquettes remplaçables, oui ?

    Both are impressive tools, but I wonder at what point a "multi tool" becomes a "tool belt" full of tools. Better yet wear a toolbox hanging around a waist belt. For the civilized man Squirt PS4 or Juice S2 will suffice, for the brute even Leatherman Surge won't satisfy.

    This video is superbly made, over the years I have read reviews of literally every multi tool! And I have come to the conclusion that all multi tools are scams in fact the manufacturers are bigger scammers, a multi tool is basically a high grade reassuring toy, period. Go to a good work shop and look around for the tools, and you will know what a real tool can do, take for example a long handed mechanic's pliers hold it and get the real feel of the leverage it can exert, the grip, and hold of the job work trust me it's a totally different experience, if any of you own a multi tool try and recall to mind how many times you have used it in a year!!! A good 10wr Visegripe plier, a 10in. Bowie with serrated edge on one side and a hammer cum axe will suffice on a camping trip,!! You did not understand the philosophy of the multi-tool. A multi-tool is a troubleshooting tool for small tasks: it can not replace full-size tools. For example, I had a team of technicians who were in charge of repairing small things when they moved in buildings: they did not move with their toolbox but with their Leatherman: put back an electrical outlet, tighten up the screws or bolts of a panel, cabinet, control cabinet, small electrical wiring, etc. All the technicians of the show (mounting sets, structures, accessories) have a multi-tool belt. In all occasions, in all places, the multi-tool is useful.
