(Seriously though, the way this song starts from a reasonable but painful place and seamlessly spirals into extreme self-hatred and ideation is a perfect display of how this stuff can happen, and seeing it in a song is a great way to help me catch myself slipping into unhealthy thought patterns. And that call out at the end was unpleasant, but I needed it. Art is powerful.)

Maybe he just got a bad vibe, I know a few times he mentioned how he didn't have time to tell a story he normally would, so maybe they put some kind of time restriction on the show. I remember he approached the mic and went back up away from it 3 times, I think waiting on a light cue (or maybe it was part of the act)? And I know there was LOUD thumping music playing elsewhere, which I'm sure worried him about the recording. Something about it irked him, but I don't know of any specific event, and he certainly didn't call them out or anything. I'm just glad we're getting music form the show because I thought his voice was fantastic that night (as evidenced by this recording).
This is one of the songs that doesn’t stop. I learn and feel something new each time I hear it. New understandings of the lyrics pop into my head randomly when I didn’t even know I was thinking about it. This and “…well better than the alternative” have had a major role in teaching me how to be human as you are. Thanks Will, you deserve that hiatus so much.

I know it’s not super clear what a lot of Will’s songs mean, but honestly just my interpretation of this one has encouraged me to seek therapy and be the best I can be for my partner. Whether it’s what he meant by it or not, it’s nice to have something that in my head articulates my feelings and motivates me to do better as a person. It’s easy to just writhe around in my own self pity sometimes, I gotta give myself a smack up the side of the head with guilt.

This song is very painful for me, it reminds me of my greatest flaw, I can't validate myself. I understand how it should work, I know I'm a decent man, but I keep chasing aproval from others.
