    I found your videos just today while looking for problems with my hibiscus and quickly got sidetracked by your banana videos! We live in Winston Salem NC and I've grown bananas since elementary school. At one time, I had 30 varieties going and dug up 100+ trees every year to bring inside for winter. Most of mine now are the basjoos for simplifying the process, still have 100+ with much less work, however I do have a few of reds this and many of your videos focus on. I love this!

    I just started bananas this year in zone 7a, both the musa and ensete plants. I find your videos the most informational. This coming late fall I’m going to dig up two of the ensete and put in greenhouse. I am contemplating wrapping three of them with burlap, R-30 unfaced insulation and bubble wrap and leave them ground. I have Canna that come back every year with no protection, we rarely see short cold snaps that have lows around ten degrees anymore in the Boise metro

    Hey Bill! Nice video by the way, I didn't know that you could propagate that way. I just wanted to ask you something. I realised that in a lot of videos of people from North America, they regularly use peat in their potting mixes quite openly. This always disturbs me because in Europe, we tend to avoid using it. In fact, it's been many years now people from the horticulture circle raise their voices and campaign against the use of it since the digging destroys the unique habitat it constitutes in the wild. I was wondering if all that media coverage never got to the North American continent. Do you know how peat resources are managed in the USA? Is it really commonly available? Or is it the same situation but there's a lack of information? To be clear, far of me the idea of blaming anyone. As I told you, it something that always get me wonder and I guess at some point you just have to ask the question 😁

    • @PlantzNThings
      @PlantzNThings  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To Be honest I have never given much thought to it... in my area peat bogs are abundant. but your right.. it is concerning that the bogs take a long time to renew. it is good to have other options. I do also use Coconut coir but that is not as readily available in my area.

    • @dimitrikeller5979
      @dimitrikeller5979 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +PlantzNThings well the bogs are considered non renewable resource, it's not really a matter of time. I think peat-free composts just do as well. Consider it, makes us all more responsible gardeners 😜

      Hi! I propagate my red bananas using this method after learning from Bill B. (He is a great teacher!)
      Last year I started propagating in early March. It took about 3 weeks to see some green growth. I am in the USA but I believe the same climate as Bill B (zone 6).
      The first time I propagated in the fall, and by February I had dozens of little banana plant pots all over my house (most not getting the proper amount of light), so I decided to try for spring instead to avoid that. By the time I have dozens of little plants I will be able to start putting them outdoors.
