Employ combat trained veterans. The vets get a good life of luxury on a cruise ship. The ship gets highly trained security personnel. And I guarantee no veteran will have a problem turning pirates into swiss cheese. Eventually the pirates will either choose another profession, or their country will run out of people. Their choice.

Merchant ships, typically, are not allowed to carry weapons. In part due to various laws at the respective ports of entry. Most countries don't want firearms entering or leaving. There's liability concerns for the insurers. And merchant ships carrying weapons may be considered a warship. It sounds silly, but maritime laws are applicable.

I took a Red Sea cruise about 10 years ago. It was a small ship with only about 350 passengers. Before we even had a lifeboat drill, we had a pirate drill! After leaving port & heading toward pirate territory, the ship was fully encased with razor wire. There were 3 ex-Royal Marine officers on guard, water cannon, and at night there was blackout. We heard later on there had been an incident one night at 2:00AM & the captain had been alerted to go up on the bridge. Thankfully, the passengers were oblivious to the excitement!

A few years ago I was on a cruise in the med and we were advised armed security personnel were to be taken on board whilst at sea. That evening we were instructed to close all cabin curtains, no lights on outside the ship, and not to use the cabin balcony. Guessing they had reports of pirates in the area. I was rather surprised as the location was on a regular cruise route and not near any areas of conflict but it goes to show they take no risks, I felt reassured they took the precautions.

5:45 mark, cruise ships have higher speed and range than pirates. THAT'S the most ridiculous thing I've heard! Cruise ships typically can only go about 20 knots, and top out at 25-30 knots. Pirates small craft can go MUCH faster! Best defense is for a cruise ship to stay farther away from coastal areas since pirates have a limited range.

What they lack in speed they more than make up for in sheer size compared to a small boat. However, if the seas are anything but calm, a small boat like pirates use would have a difficult time keeping up with a cruise ship movie full speed. Based off the videos I've seen of pilots getting on ships the slow down for that process, I can only imagine trying to board one moving full speed.

There are many nations who have warships patrolling that area to protect shipping. However, it's a large area and a warship may not be close enough to help. I watched a documentary about this a while back. Some civilian ships have the water canons and one in the documentary actually had the cannons but they shot out boiling steam at high pressure which was certainly a deterrant. The problem with the warships is that if they catch the pirates, they let them go. If they were to prosecute them, the pirates have to go to Nigeria to be tried. The nigerians don't want the pirates because it's clogging up their legal system, there are so many. One warship even let them go, and supplied them with water and food to get them back to shore. I mean, where is the sense in that? Let them go and if they starve, or die of dehydration, then so be it. These pirates make millions of dollars a year from doing this. As for the cruise ships being able to outrun a pirate boat? That's ridiculous. Cruise ships are slow and cumbersome. How on earth could they outrun a speedboat travelling at 40 miles an hour across the water?

In truth... it depends on the cruise ship. Some cruise ships actually have full security detachments with weapons...
though there is one Megayacht out there... that "doubles" as a royal yacht at times... and carries 30mm cannons, anti-air and... anti-tank missiles. (you might wonder why anti-tank... the ship uses small concealed weapons platforms based around the Typhoon weapons platform, this system is remote controlled allowing for compact storage, but is limited in the size of weapons it can mount. generally any .50 cal to 30mm cannon. some being able to carry 2-4 surface to air missiles (stinger or Igla) or 2-4 anti-tank missiles, such as the Spike-ER, when mounted on the typhoon, it can reach out and touch a fast attack craft at 10 miles. BUT again this is used sometimes as a presidential yacht so its allowed to be armed)

Why the star spangled banner when none of the ships are American based? Ouch that’s a faux pas

149 pirate attacks and 179 ships hijacked? How does that math work out?

How do 179 ships get hijacked in 149 instances? negative 30 seems to be part of that equation.

Being stuck on a crowded, floating mall where contagious pathogens spread like wildfire forcing passengers to isolate in tiny cabins just doesn’t sound like fun and relaxation to me.

And add to that the prospect of doing that for 9 months! The Royal Caribbean World cruise is only a month in and it already started. Big fist fight (4 women) in one of the bars the other night. Lots of drama already. The weather has been so bad that they’ve had to miss scheduled ports of call. People have spent a fortune to have this experience. I cannot imagine. They ran out of a favored wine like 4 days on the water. At the end of the trip, there are going to be legal fights and a lot of overweight, alcoholic people.

About 40 years ago I did a couple of cruises on small sailing ships in the Caribbean. Unlike the hyper regulated world, those days were a bit 'wild west'. At one point a rather suspicious small boat with a few guys approached our ship. The captain went to the rail with a shotgun that he kept by his door. The guys backed off and turned around.

I think that they should have a cruise where 2nd Ammendment, Freedom loving, non-communist or democrats sail in pirate waters. Sit along the rails, have a steak, listen for the Claxton call" pirates spotted on the starboard stern.."
Them put on your ear protection, finish your margaritas, pick your target...

When I went on a cruise a few years ago I saw pirates. Tiny boat with big guns and they followed us for a bit. Suddenly the cruise made rlly big waves and was knocking their tiny boat around and they turned around as the waves were bigger than their boat. Very interesting experience, happened in the Caribbean, maybe the Gulf of Mexico. I forgot where exactly it was at but it was on a cruise to Jamaica!
