I believe the DCEU could have been saved, but James Gunn took the easy route and rebooted everything while only keeping his projects in the DCEU. The most important quote for the DCEU is, Batman isn't the Batman we knew anymore, and Superman isn't the Superman we know yet. I believe by the end of Zack Snyders Justice League, they both became the Superman and Batman we know. And to show it, we should have gotten a Man of Steel 2 and a solo Batman film which is what could have corrected the DCEU!
Nah, unfortunately we saw where Snyder was going with Superman, and he was going to go the Knightmare route by making Superman super evil, and THEN Superman gets redeemed. But after destroying and conquering the Earth, is that really the Superman we want? It's like getting a blue licorice after having to eat an entire bag of black licorice. Yes, the blue will taste good, but it's not going to remove the bad taste of the black licorice out of your mouth.
My thoughts (edit) exactly...it could've been saved anytime...even without Snyder and if people would've been so opposed to the Knightmare scenario, they could've easily just changed it to something else.
They should have given Henry a final solo movie and that should have been the beginning of "Injustice God Among Us". I would have loved to see Henry in that Superman role.
I do NOT trust James Gunn to do Superman properly. Gunn does quirky asshole characters perfectly because he IS a quirky asshole. Superman is the epitome of masculinity & a patriotic boyscout. Gunn doesn't do those well.
Yeah the Russos' probably could have done a good Superman. They did right by Steve Rogers and Captain America, especially Winter Soldier. Wish we could have gotten a Superman film along that line.
@@Billy-bc8pk I'm not sure based on their recent work, but at least I'd trust them to possibly pull it off since they've done it before. EVERYTHING Gunn has done in the past, movie wise and social media post-wise, are the EXACT OPPOSITE of what the character of Superman is.
The first image of the teaser trailer is a guy dressed in Superman pajamas, lying in the snow, bleeding from the mouth and needing a dog to help him. That definitely doesn't seem like the epitome of masculinity. I'm starting to miss Bryan Singer Superman...
@Zeoran Directors can't make movies with different tones? James Cameron directed The Terminator, Terminator 2 Judgement Day, Titanic, Aliens, Avatar, all films with different tones and styles, same thing with Sam Raimi, he started out with the Evil Dead trilogy and later directed the Spider-Man trilogy
I loved that first half of man of Steel, the whole movie should have been about Lois following the trail of the man who lives on the fringes of society but can't stop helping people. Then he is forced to reveal himself as superman.. and then the second movie could have been zod finding earth.
"Unfinished business" is a good way to describe the DCEU. It had its issues - some minor, some major - but it feels like they threw the baby out with the proverbial bathwater. Cavill was brilliant as Superman, and Affleck's age gave him credibility as Bruce Wayne. CGI can turn a ham sandwich into a believable Batman, but being Bruce Wayne requires gravitas. Anyway, I guess we'll see how the reboot goes.
God DC utterly wasted Henry Cavill. This new movie looks super promising and I'm just visualizing 'what if Cavill had been in THIS version of Superman' instead of the dour and depressing one that he was actually given??
@@SirBlackReeds The problem is that you can't start backwards with the character and then try to make him "heroic". That only works with villains. You can do that with Venom, or Winter Soldier, or even Black Widow, but you can't do that with Superman because then it's just a completely different character. Having him start gloomy and then just moving further into villain territory only to have him redeemed at the end isn't Superman, it's Black Adam.
I hope it's better than I think it will be. Someone in a chat said they were 'cautiously optimistic', I feel incautiously unoptimistic. I do hope I'm wrong.
Maybe they only appear at the end If I was writing a film like this maybe superman inspires the world and after the big battle we get a montage of heroes stepping out into the world inspired and not afraid to do the right thing
This strikes me as a Comic Book Superman rather than the filmverse Superman. And in comics you can get crossovers of other characters... But more importantly, if you don't use them you lose the film rights to them... Though why anyone bought the rights to Guy Gardner is a mystery. But a mystery that might hint at a Green Lantern film... once they figure out how to make one.
@@cadennichols351 dude. You literally forget Iron Man 1 and every other solo superhero movie without other heroes. You just said the stupidest excuse I’ve ever heard.
I wasn't a fan of starting it with Superman being defeated, but when he whistled I geeked out because I knew it meant Krypto. A lot of people don't like the sillier aspects that we got in the 50's and 60's, but Krypto's a good boy and seeing him kick up the snow, rushing to his master was a lot of fun
As soon as he started whistling, there was only one thing that could mean. I'm not one of those people who's obsessed with animals or anything, but the inclusion of Krypto is one of the strongest points in favor of this movie. Is he an odd character in the DC universe's worldbuilding? Yes. But he's also representative of a more wholesome time in comics. Krypto won't save to movie if it's bad, but he gets me intrigued enough to let the movie make its case.
It looks like a comic book brought to life. That didn't play well in Hulk (2003). But, this is Superman and Gunn did make the GOTG work. So, I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt.
@@PettyCrow-n9c Yes, I have. I've been reading comics off and on since the 80s. Krypto looks great. Guy Gardner is a little old, but passable. I don't like the design of the S. But, I'm thrilled to see the red trunks back.
@@Minecraft_at_Night I would say quiz me. But, you'd just say I was looking up the answers. I used to watch the 50s show with my Dad, I grew up with The Super Friends and the Dini-verse. I can't name off artists and issue numbers. I'm not that knowledgable. But, I'm far from a normie.
@SaRENRampaiger I don't think Hawkgirl has a big enough fan base for that to be a worry. I am a huge DC fan and I know nothing about her. Even Hawkman being Black fit the Egyptian vibe. But I know Egyptians weren't black.
So, to sell me on a new Superman....you start with him beaten into a bloody pulp. Wow! Genius marketing, WB. We've seen this guy deconstructed over and over for the past 20 years. I'll pass another round of "he's just one of us" love stories.
The first scene of the trailer is unintentionally funny. He looks more like a guy in his pajamas not wanting to get up from bed rather brutally beaten up. Lol
I do not get the excitement for this at ALL. man of steel was awesome. this looks like cw silliness. and still not as good as smallville. had a few cool elements but overall i just miss henry cavill superman.
Yeah. Man of Steel instantly looked and felt like "cinema". This feels cheap. (Loved Man of Steel.) It might be great; I'm not writing it off. Gunn can make good movies. But I'm not feeling it yet.
It might not be bad, it might even be quite good. I'm just at the point though of being burned out with superhero movies. Particularly DC with their constant re-boots & re-castings of the same heroes every time a dud of a movie they shovel out doesn't make them a bazillion dollars at the box office.
I think I'm going crazy. I must be the only one who thinks he doesn't look like a good Superman. The suit still looks like it doesn't fit well and like something that would never be possible to hide under his clothes. He doesn't look the part to me. I didn't want another director's stylized vision of Superman, I wanted him to step out of the comics or one of the animated productions and onto the silver screen. A big burly Superman starting out in a suit his mom made him. Not some rubbery looking whatever this is.
This ☝️. It’s the suit that’s ruining it for me as well. The CW show even had the 1930s era suit in the first episode that Martha made for him in the first few minutes.
I think he (the actor) could be a fine superman. Without hearing him in scenes with dialogue, judging screen prescence, etc, it's just not possible to tell. Brandon Routh could make a fine supes too, in his day, but the dialogue was wooden and unconvincing. That's mostly all on direction and writing. That said -- I'm just not a fan of many of the design choices. Suit looks... off. Great colors, interesting variation of the 'S' but it looks like something from a backline Marvel character (imo) and I am just not sold. I think the MOS suit set a good baseline to iterate from, if a bit too dark blue for my tastes, and the Superman & Lois suit was shockingly good for a TV series. A $350M movie ought to not have to even remotely compete with a CW/Max Series suit. Just doesn't look up to par.
I liked Man of Steel. I felt like it was optimistic and grounded in reality. What would you do? kill Zod or let him kill the humans. Henry was a perfect fit for Superman. I wanted to see where he would take it especially after Black Adam (another movie I really liked).
Superman is also vulnerable to magic, but people tend to forget THAT. He's faced Black Adam but also has a friend and ally in Captain Marvel. Magic bends reality and defies the laws of physics, hence it can bypass Superman's alien physiology and can thus make her powerless, vulnerable and able to be harmed. Also, the DCAU seem to indicate he can be hurt by electricity.
That's my greatest worry. The tone seems very good, but I don't want Superman pushed to the back because DC can't wait and take their time to develop characters properly.
Can we all take bets on what character will steal the show from Superman? Superman already has an older gf shown, no origin and nothing novel to expect from that relationship development miss. Could green lantern have them meet, rewrite the story even though you’re trying to keep all the nostalgia? I could see this being a smoother JL movie but why share the screen time with so many people. At least MOS had his parents set the development tone, kept the hero interactions genuine rather than coworker shallow. Since Krypto can’t die, we can’t have a John wick moment at all either. And the bar is set pretty low for Lex, the BvS version was cringe and too weird to fit a real comic book comparison.
I've seen the DC movies reboot so many times it *feels* like a nearly daily occurrence. I know that's an exaggeration compared to how many times they actually have rebooted it, but it's still enough times that it doesn't surprise me like rebooting the MCU would.
@@j.k.1239 Why? This trailer had the same bleak, dark tone as the Snyder movies. All they did was add a dog. I've heard people claim this movie will be a return to form. Bullshit. Superman wore a grim expression throughout the trailer. He did not smile once. Nothing in this trailer conveyed the optimism and upbeat tone that made Christopher Reeve's Superman magical.
@@laststand6420 I get you: they're both so monstrously powerful others could call them gods. But neither see themselves as such. Saitama has no secret identity, or life outside heroics, though; but he's just as needed as Superman. People just haven't realized yet.
It's not just Kryptonite. Superman has a number of weaknesses that villains can take advantage of. He has basically no defense against magic, forced teleportation, time travel, the radiation of red stars, and many higher-level beings can outdo, or even outright take away his powers. He also has no shortage of villains who can compete with him on various levels and in various ways. The Parasite, Metallo, Zod, Mongul, Livewire, Bizarro, Mxyzptlk, Brainiac, and oh, yes. Darkseid, among many others. If they don't want to go with any of those (and that's perfectly fair,) then they can come up with a completely new super-villain. It's not at all difficult to imagine up a character, demon, monster or alien that can keep up with Superman in their own way. You just have to be willing to tell stories about very powerful evil creatures and heroes. Just a few ideas would include; (1) some ancient pagan god rises again to reclaim his or her old throne, and Superman has to find some way to defeat them, (2) a Jekyll and Hyde-type character is possessed by a monster that causes him to become superhumanly powerful and destructive when subjected to certain stimuli. Superman realizes this, and struggles with the need to defeat this enemy, while also not wanting to hurt the man, (3) super-powered aliens from a nearby star arrive on Earth and offer their help to protect Earth from further threats, but of course, it turns out to be a deception, and some of them abduct Superman. He needs to learn their weakness before they can put their evil plan into action. Superman is *the* super-hero. Stories about him just have to be exciting and impressive; they don't take all that much to work out.
I agree, the DCU needed more opportunities and unleash the Snider version of this universe. WB needed to keep their noses away. Both Henry and Affleck were amazing! Now, we will never see them again.
Snyder’s movies actually were financially successful it was everything after aquaman that wasn’t. After snyder had left. And James Gunn himself has said recently that there is no over arching story or villain like thanks was for marvel. It’s just going to be a bunch of movies that exist in the same universe.
I think it works because it immediately made me wonder what happened, what was he fighting that was able to hurt him like that. It sets up that there is definitely going to be something in this movie that will be a major challenge for Superman to overcome.

"There's no sense of story yet" Those are the BEST kind of teasers! I'm fed up with 3 minute trailers telling me the entire plot and story beats of an upcoming movie!
Thats actually a misconception. Snyders DC films, MoS, BvS, WW, SS and even Justice League were all on an upward trajectory financially, but WB wants BVS to make a billion despite being the second film in an unproven franchise. Despite WBs extreme meddling, Justice League was very profitable. But they decided to ditch Snyder and things dropped off a cliff
yeah, MoS was a success, otherwise they would not have made the sequel...BvS made almost 900mil, pretty good imo, despite the fact that half the audience never saw MoS before (I've read a LOT of comments), so its no surprise so many people had no idea wtf happened there. SS was a critical disaster but a super giant success, it made almost 800mil on a pretty low budget without China, which is a big deal cause that's a lot of money ! and WW made again around 900mil on a lower budget - pretty good numbers, I'd say...I'm guessing the reason why JL didn't do the money it should, is cause everyone knew its not the movie it was meant to be and felt out of line and weird...the rest doesn't matter because at the time it was already revealed that Snyder's been kicked out.
It looks cheap like a CW show. Smallville looked better. Gunn has built this Superman on a very bad foundation of two juvinile garbage flops from the DCEU (the Suicide Sqaud and Peacemaker) that Gunn brought over to the DCU and Gunn's current juvinile flop Creatures Commandos. The tone for this univere has been set with, stupid, Juvinle humor and mentally stunted adults making it a universe that is more naked Gunn with Superheros
Completely agree. Krypto dog, cartoonish over saturation. Cavills more serious, gritty Superman was the right direction, just DC rushing a universe was the issue. We didn't need/want this childish reboot.
@nah88 I'm fine with Krypto, but they seem to want to throw in as many references for classic Superman fans, while giving yet another modern take. It just clashes instead of coming together.
Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, and Creature COmmandos were critical darlings lol. THE Suicide Squad came out in the middle of a pandemic, with same day streaming, and off the back of the hated FIRST suicide squad movie. That's the only reason the box office didn't work out.
Im sorry, Krypto the superdog made me laugh and not in the way the movie intends. It all feels a little too campy and like a parody. Its more like an Austin Powers interpretation of superman and i dont think the normie neutral audience will take to that so much. Krypto the superdog... 😄😆😅🤣😆😄

I found it to be a very meh teaser with a terrible opening image. I also don't get Superman vibes seeing this actor; in fact, where you paused it at 2:34 I get a poor man's Nathan Fillion look alike vibe. Lois is mid. The costume is at best drab, with a poor design, and has a bad crest. Too many characters in this teaser which suggests there will be too many characters in a movie that needed to be just Superman. They race swapped Perry White again. Did Henry dirty, yet put his brother in his movie again. This will be a hard pass for me. EDIT: Superman has never been about his powers it has been about his humanity, that is why he works.
Some people don't like the suits collar. I don't like the boots. They look too plasticie, if that's a word. The dog could steal the show as pet animals have a way of doing.
Nope. Hard pass. Too much crammed into one film. This is going to be utter muck. Mark my words. Your hope and a good cast are wasted here. James Gunn is not a good and talented director. The Guardians movies were the height of Marvel bathos, and they're full of plot holes and inconsistency. He's a B Movie director at best.
It looks interesting. Including Krypto the dog is a fun call back. I grew up watching the classic Filmation cartoons of the 60s and 70s, when Krypto was always by Superboy’s side. That said, one trend I regret was started by the Christopher Reeve films (as much as I love those films) was the “wimpification” of Clark Kent - something which, even then, seemed rather jarring to me as a seven year old watching “Superman: The Movie” in theaters. As a boy, the Superman I was used to was George Reeves as well as the various cartoon versions from Fleischer, Filmation and Hanna-Barbera and the comics. Clark was definitely a contrast from Superman, but he was neither a wimp nor incompetent - and he wasn’t an unkempt slouch. He was a rather skilled and hard hitting newspaper man, well dressed in a sharp suit and tie and hat. I miss that Clark Kent. And Henry Cavell actually did bring that Clark back to a certain degree. I miss seeing a competent Clark Kent.

I'm confused. Gunn said he didn't consider Cavill for Superman because he wanted to cast someone younger. So, why'd he cast someone who looks even older, and doesn't really look like Superman in the first place.

This doesn't seem like Superman at all...why must we always have this weak, small, beatable Superman? Guess I'll just have to read the old comics to get the real Superman stories...
I think you answered your own question. Warner Brothers was done with Henry Cavil and their DCEU. A rebooting was the next step. Henry Cavil's salary was also pretty high so keeping him around as any kind of Superman variant was just not desirable for the studio.
Huh????? I like how you don’t mention how awful green lantern looks in this movie and that dragon looked garbage! This teaser trailer did nothing to hype this movie up?!
It looks exactly like Guy Gardner, a member of the green lantern Corps, looks like in the comics. He's a tool so should be a fun character, especially if played by Fillion

I never had issues with how Man of Steel looked. I really loved the emotional core of the movie. Even Batman Vs Superman was enjoyable. One of my favourite elements was Batman trying to contribute to the doomsday fight when Superman and Wonder Woman are basically gods in comparison. Slightly different but relatable is Sokka in Avatar: The Last Airbender (Animated) At times he, as a non-bender, had to work so hard to contribute when the others were all benders. Superman did become overpowered and kryptonite cannot be the only solution. Things still need to have weight, literally and figuratively. His powers and abilities all need limits and as heroes stories normally go those limits will need to be broken to beat the bad guy. He will need to try and to fail and to try again. He will need to put in the effort and earn those victories.
I’m just not feeling it from this teaser. Something is “off”. Maybe the symbol, the other heroes in the film..? I dunno..it’s not giving me a Superman vibe, more of let’s see how much we can throw at the comic fans. Casuals aren’t going to know half the characters in this film.
@@MrMeatballMasterMort I disagree with you and OP’s viewpoint. You’re being far too negative towards the movie and leave little room for optimism in my opinion. It’s one thing to be cautious towards an ambitious movie but, to have a negative viewpoint like yours is another thing. Allegedly they’re still working on that one, but I suspect it’s like Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy and they don’t want to admit it’s been shelved because they’d be accused of racism.
Gunn wants total creative control and, right or wrong Cavill demands input. Also, I can imagine the Cavill/Afleck/Gadot/Mamoa combo is really expensive and still doesn’t guarantee a big draw. Based on this teaser, unless we find out there’s something weird in it I’ll give the new one a chance.
As far as I know, James Gunn's movies only come in two flavors: cynical deconstruction, and Guardians of Galaxy. Judging by the presence of Gardner and Krypto, I'm guessing he's gunning for a mix of the two this time-a combination that is about as much of a good idea as putting gravy on Skittles. Because that's how Green Lantern looked when he was Guy Gardener (yes, Gardener) in the late '80s. And yes, he looks stupid.

@@brandenjenkins9479 you're right, moving on is not watching shitty rehash after shitty rehash. I'm not watching another fucking origin story
Dude it over. Get over it.
I know right? He's probably thinking the same thing. Henry Cavill deserved a better director and writer.
I hope his war hammer series does well
In all fairness, the original plan for the cancelled Man of Steel series was to build Superman into an optimistic hero.
@@butterstotch3233 Even if it sucks?
@@SirBlackReeds The problem is that you can't start backwards with the character and then try to make him "heroic". That only works with villains. You can do that with Venom, or Winter Soldier, or even Black Widow, but you can't do that with Superman because then it's just a completely different character. Having him start gloomy and then just moving further into villain territory only to have him redeemed at the end isn't Superman, it's Black Adam.
I hope it's better than I think it will be. Someone in a chat said they were 'cautiously optimistic', I feel incautiously unoptimistic. I do hope I'm wrong.

My faith in this movie dropped about 80%, after seeing this teaser.
I don’t like that other superheroes are in Superman’s movie. This is supposed to be a Superman movie, not the Justice League.
Maybe they only appear at the end
If I was writing a film like this maybe superman inspires the world and after the big battle we get a montage of heroes stepping out into the world inspired and not afraid to do the right thing
This is my biggest problem. The fact that they're still shoving other heroes in is annoying.
Same here. They should have focused on Superman in his own movie, but James Gunn can't help himself on making a team film instead of a solo movie.

The cast department for Warner Bros and DC films needs to be fired right now.
Seeing Krypto doesn't negate "house husband" Superman...dude is weak and nothing like what Superman is supposed to be like.
Right?! I was like is he whistling! Is.. that a dog? KRYPTO!
Wait till you see Superhorse😜
I’m still waiting for Ace, the Bathound in a new Batman movie.
It looks 'strange' but not awful at this point...only time will tell

You are definitely not the only one.
Same here. I wish they had gotten the director of the first Captain America movie and cast someone else.
DW you're not the only one, it looks like an AI generated fan trailer.
I liked Man of Steel. I felt like it was optimistic and grounded in reality. What would you do? kill Zod or let him kill the humans.
Henry was a perfect fit for Superman. I wanted to see where he would take it especially after Black Adam (another movie I really liked).
At least they put the symbol on the cape this time.
The wrong one tho. To me it looks like diamond with line. Im not getting Superman S. I wish it was classic look.
@@TheRealJuseBeats Yeah the S design sucks
Superman is also vulnerable to magic, but people tend to forget THAT. He's faced Black Adam but also has a friend and ally in Captain Marvel. Magic bends reality and defies the laws of physics, hence it can bypass Superman's alien physiology and can thus make her powerless, vulnerable and able to be harmed. Also, the DCAU seem to indicate he can be hurt by electricity.
I just can't believe they made Clark Kent a friggin' Broccoli Bro. Fuck sake.
You don't get a second chance at a first impression, but his hair looks infinitely better in every shot other than that first one.
It seems to suffer from bloat due to the cast
That's my greatest worry. The tone seems very good, but I don't want Superman pushed to the back because DC can't wait and take their time to develop characters properly.

Seen that far too many times with far too many movies. Pick up any Superman comic and you'll see... THIS.

I get you:
they're both so monstrously powerful others could call them gods.

I think you answered your own question. Warner Brothers was done with Henry Cavil and their DCEU. A rebooting was the next step. Henry Cavil's salary was also pretty high so keeping him around as any kind of Superman variant was just not desirable for the studio.

2025 - a beaten Superman is carried away by his dog, cartoonishly.
It's not bad... but it's not great either....
My thoughts exactly.
It’s a teaser, further judgement should be reserved until we see the first official trailer.

A “CW show from 10 years ago” is below the belt, especially for a TEASER trailer. Like I suggested, wait for more to be shown or watch the movie.
Before any assumptions of myself can be made: 1. I’m not a D rider for Gunn, I have my doubts regarding what’s been showing in Creature Commandos as well as some casting choices for this movie / 2. I’m coming from the stand point that this movie deserves a chance before being judged so harshly / 3. Henry Cavil was great for the time we’ve had him but his roll as Superman has since ended and it’s time to move on.
I like what I saw so far. It's a good start.
I can already hear the weeping and lamenting of the Snyderbros 😂
🙄
i would have liked them to finish that story line myself however it is what it is we just move on. maybe this one will be good.
@@ShadowCthulhu I'm not moving on. This version looks terrible and since they aren't finishing the Snyderverse I am giving this a hard pass. Also what makes you think they won't do to the Gunnverse what was already done with the Snyderverse?
Why do Anti Snyder Cultists have to be such a buzzkill? Can't you just respect peoples opinions and move on?
@@claytonveno3710 Surely you mean pro-Snyder?
Glad to hear about the audio book! Time to get a Christmas gift to myself !
I'm with you that the Snyder Universe should've finished.
agree 💯 !
Here's a radical idea for these movies to get the fanbase back
Stop going woke!
Im 57 and saw the Christopher Reeve movie in the theater. The music takes me back to my youth. I'm hoping this movie is great . It's all about the story , will it get me to care about the characters.
Reeve
@DarkCROWgaming thanks
I'm looking forward to seeing this. Looks pretty good.
suprised superman isnt black yet
...YET!!!

Allegedly they’re still working on that one, but I suspect it’s like Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy and they don’t want to admit it’s been shelved because they’d be accused of racism.
Honestly it will be better than the nonsense this trailer is showing
Nothing for me here, moving on...
