    Please consider supporting me at / lindsayholiday and help me make more fascinating videos!
    Maria Theresa was one of the most powerful women in history. Her husband and son got to hold the title of Emperor but she was the real power. She reformed and modernized her empire all while having 16 children, 5 of whom were sons. Despite their mother’s power, the boys were favored and educated to be leaders. 2 were Holy Roman Emperors who shared the ideals of enlightened reform though with very different results. One held a life-long grudge against his elder brother and one was Beethoven’s first patron.
    In this episode:
    Emperor Joseph II
    Charles Joseph
    Emperor Leopold II
    Ferdinand, Duke of Breisgau
    Maximilian Francis, Archbishop-Elector of Cologne

      Actually, you can read some of the letters exchanged between Joseph II and others, including his mother the empress and co-regent Maria Therese, on his discussions with Louis. For example in one letter Joseph II wrote that:
      _"...[Louis] 'had well-conditioned, strong erections and introduced his member, stayed there for two minutes without moving, withdrew without ejaculation, and then, still erect, wished [his wife] good evening. He should be whipped like a donkey to make him discharge in anger'. "_

      That and she was "Germanic". In royal circles back then, Germanic women were legendary for their breeding. I'm not sure how accurate this was. German royal families tended to be (on average) larger and more of their offspring survived into adulthood. This was the reason why that although the German-speaking part of Europe played a minor part in European power politics until the late 19th Century, almost every royal family had "German blood", mainly through female-oriented dynastic marriages.

      Catherine Parr ... I think she was just too immature to handle the differences from what she knew. That is no one's fault, but I also agree in part, because if she'd been taught politics it is possible that the revolution may have waited another generation to play out. Marie Antoinette was essentially sent into exile... away from all she held dear to promote the interests of her OLD home over that of her new one... and never once was she told otherwise. Poor girl, poor woman-child....

    • @wvnder
      @wvnder 4 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      citrine dragon No, what’s more relevant is the fact that an Austrian-French war had recently ended, so the French people really didn’t like Marie Antoinette for that, and Louis wouldn’t listen to anything she said about politics because she was Austrian.

      No one educated Catherine the Great, but she somehow became one of the most enlightened and well-read women of the time. Self-education is a thing.

    • @bananaborz1
      @bananaborz1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      @@R00siable Catherine the Great had her mother-in-law as a supporter and mentor in the Russian court. Marie-Antoinette arrived to French court already disliked by many nobles simply for being Austrian. And the friends she did have were just that: friends. None were particularly powerful or well-versed in statecraft.
      Do remember that the roles of Catherine and Marie were massively different. One was a ruling autocrat, one was a consort. Catherine got to call the shots and Marie-Antoinette, as a consort, was only supposed to make babies and look pretty. No one wanted her to rule anything or make decisions (well, no Frenchmen, the Austrians however expected her to push pro-Austrian policies which would only make her unpopular in France).
      I must disagree, however. Marie-Antoinette did self-educate. After the birth of her first daughter she was not the same party girl who would dance the night away in Paris or be at the opera until three in the morning. When the revolution broke out Louis XVI was deeply depressed (actually, he was depressed even before due to several reasons: death of two children and the diamond necklace affair to name two). He became more indecisive than ever, and it was MA who sort of took the helm. She was the one who wrote to other kings and queens in Europe asking for support and she had correspondence with revolutionary leaders like Danton and the comte de Mirabeau.

      @@neilbuckley1613 I'm not sure how much history you know, but Maria Theresa had Protestant antecedents and Queen Victoria had Catholic antecedents (including Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain). During the 17th Century religious wars that plagued Europe, kings, princes, heirs, etc regularly changed religions or participated in mixed-marriages to retain or acquire power.
      The act of the English parliament that barred Roman Catholics was in 1701. That would not affect bloodlines (or heirs/holders of the crown) prior to that point: of which many were Catholic and of which Victoria was descended.
      Moreover, both female monarchs are distantly related through the House of Welf, of which the British royal family is heavily descended.

I'm not saying MA didn't do anything wrong, but I feel like her upbringing played a huge part in that. Outside of marrying whomever her mother told her to marry and making babies... what other motivations did she have in life? How is that "weird"?
      That is the cognitive dissonance that is inherent in human beings. I had a VP of HR who didn't want to hire a property manager who "...was too old". The VP was 50+ and so was the candidate. I know people who were abused as children, but then turn around and abuse their children. I know a co-worker who was ostracized and made fun of as a kid growing up, but now does the same to others as an adult. I have a neighbor who is infuriatingly noisy every day and into the early morning hours, but then complained because another neighbor has his alarm clock go off for 1 minute every morning.
      Self awareness is not a marked quality of human beings.

Joseph was made King of Naples and then Spain (the latter hated his guts out), Louis was made King of Holland (and apparently introduced himself as their "rabbit" instead of their king because of him botching the Dutch language). Jerome was briefly given rule over Westphalia in Germany and a fourth brother got exiled IIRC. I don't know much about Napoleon's sisters, but I do know one of them married Joachim Murat (the legendary cavalry marshal) and the couple became Naples' new rulers after Joseph was moved to Spain.

    I really admired Joseph for his impact on only on society in the Holy Roman empire so his policies were somewhat strict they did really did bring forth the art the enlightenment movement. I respect him a lot more for what he did for the arts encouraging and supporting composer such as Mozart Haydn and others. I also love howeach of the Habsburgs at least encourage the arts in a small way and how there influence really brought out certain composer's.

    Mozart wrote four operas for four separate emperors. As Lindsay mentioned, the young Mozart composed Ascanio in Alba for the wedding of Ferdinand Karl. Mozart also wrote “Il Re Pastore” for Maximilian’s visit to Salzburg in 1775. Joseph commissioned Mozart to write a German opera in 1782, so he wrote “The Abduction from the Seraglio”, and Mozart wrote the opera “La Clemenza di Tito” for the coronation of Leopold in September 1791. He died shortly after, on December 5th, 1791.

      Nele1208 Why that response? The Rothschilds were less horrible than the Romanovs. I am so glad those Romanovs were killed. Sure, the Rothschilds colonized Israel but they didn’t screw up half of two continents. Lesser of evils. Besides, the Rothschilds were better looking than most of these royal people. So glad that’s not the case anymore.

    What was with the name Maria? Don’t get me wrong, I like the name but how many times does a family need to use it with every daughter. The only difference is using a completely different middle name but still. Every daughter/granddaughter of Maria Theresa we came across was named Maria something, it’s crazy. Don’t get me wrong any of the Maria’s watching, it’s a beautiful name, it’s just crazy how it’s so popular with this family tree.

      They used it to show the families reverence of the Virgin Mary "Marie".... As Catholics it was vital that they showed their piety!

    • @amandajean7738

      Catholics usually give their children saint and biblical names, this also includes middle names. Example, Peter(name) Francis(middle name) Courgette (last name). Peter the name of a biblical apostle and Francis the name of a Catholic saint.
