Extraordinary interpretation of this Dancer of which one does not speak enough. And yet...what a talent, what expressiveness! He was one of these great Artists of whom one says that they did not need make-up. This extract is a jewel.
This production of 'Sleeping Beauty' is my all-time favorite! Anthony Dowell is marvelous as Carabosse, the costumes (especially the King and Queen) are exquisite, and the dancers have an unparalleled elegance!💖💖
Ugh!!! I love his version of Carabosse- it was soooo wicked. The way he acts out the ages, looks over and says "nahh, even that's too evil for me" and raises the age a little. hahaha I love it
@@Roheryn100 around 4:04 is when Carabosse says (in ballet pantomime) “that baby is little now, but she will grow and grow”, you can see there where the age & years are acted out
@@whatdoyousupposeAh yes, I see now. ❤ This part is so fully mimed out and explains so much . This video was helpful. th-cam.com/video/n9caxHUZcVg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=HWPb8HlB9zbrhNT2 I have watched probably a dozen other productions and so often in Russian versions the King and Queen are total clowns and just stand there . But these two seem a true couple and very caring and loving. This Lilac Fairy really explains what will happen. Others just start waving Bye Bye to Carabosse. 😄
During my 65 years I' ve seen this ballet done by a couple of companies - both live, on DVD and via YT. This - imho - is the most fascinating and convincing interpretation of Carabosse I've seen so far. Great acting !
The choice of a short dress give to Carabosse a disturbing androginy. A masterpiece, thanks to Sir Dowell, too. Never speck, never "too" falsely feminine ... elegant but scary! 🥰🥰🥰
The acting in this is great! Not so sure if I like the sets and costumes, both are beautiful.. but together it's kind of busy. I definitely would like to see this version though; it looks really interesting.
Anthony Dowell was brilliant as Carabosse, far better than the women who usually downplay the role and as a result lose the enormous evil of the character.
He may be too old now, but if the Royal Ballet ever brings back Bournonville's Sylphide I'd love to see him as Madge. He'd be such fun in the fortune-teller scene.
Christopher Saunders, who danced the Lilac Fairy's cavalier in this, is also still with the company. He recently played the King alongside Elizabeth McGorian

Worst production ever Costumes set all ridiculous for dancing or anything else. If memory serves the designer had overbooked her commissions so the production was delayed If the King and Queen look grotesque in their costumes the four princes looked ridiculous and somewhat comical in wired skirted jackets and what looked like paper doilies on their heads!! If that wasnt bad enough preceding this production was an Opera in which actual horses pulling carts were used an d grease and mud left on the stage making it lethal for the dancers Sadly I believe the Designer of this produc tion died soon after. I recall a TV programme on this version and one of the principles commenting on her costume with the words " She does realise we have to dance in these costumes?" I believe for its time it was one of the most expensive veraions pf SB As for Dowell a wonderful dancer in his heyday perfect artistry unfortunately his Carabosse far outshined by Mason and subsequent RB ladies who have been lucky enough to have Monica as their coach
He was always wonderful. What a delight to see him in this miming role!
Maria Björnson (Bjørnson but still) designed the visuals! Give he big credits, yall!

I completely agree. This production lives up to Tchaikovsky's incredible score.

Love when the Lilac Fairy just smiles at 6:30 and gestures “Nope. Not on MY watch !”

He is really excellent in this. He does look like Ninette de Valois, maybe she inspired him...
