NHL Star Johnny Gaudreau and Brother Tragically Killed by Suspected Drunk Driver in New Jersey

The Columbus Blue Jackets are heartbroken and deeply saddened by this unthinkable loss. "Our sincere condolences go out to his wife, Meredith, his children, Noa and Johnny, his parents, their family, and friends as they cope with the sudden passing of Johnny and Matthew."
Johnny Gaudreau, affectionately known as "Johnny Hockey," was renowned for his dazzling offensive skills and remarkable scoring ability.
He played alongside his brother at Boston College before being drafted by the Calgary Flames in 2011, where he quickly won the hearts of fans. A seven-time NHL All-Star, Gaudreau signed a seven-year contract with the Blue Jackets in 2022 and was entering his third season with the team.
"Johnny often shared how his father taught him to skate as a young boy in New Jersey, a passion he carried with him throughout his 11 NHL seasons," said NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman in a statement.
"A gifted playmaker, Johnny was a fan favorite at the NHL All-Star Game, where his talents shone brightly in the various skills competitions," Bettman added.
After his own hockey career, Johnny's brother Matthew followed in their father's footsteps, becoming the head coach of their alma mater, Gloucester Catholic High School.
"Johnny and Matt were pillars of pride in the Gloucester Catholic community, and their loss will be deeply felt by all who knew them," the school shared on Facebook.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy also offered their condolences.
"Fran and I extend our deepest sympathies to the family of @BlueJacketsNHL’s Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew," DeWine said. "Our thoughts are with the entire Blue Jackets organization as they grieve the loss of one of their own."
"To the entire Gaudreau family, please know that New Jersey mourns with you," Murphy expressed.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation, according to police.
