- "Arvydas Sabonis Offense and Defense Highlights - Before Injuries" is an offense and defense highlights compilation I made for One of the Greatest NBA Centers Ever Lived, Arvydas Sabonis. It includes the very specific post moves in low post, mid-range jumpers, hook-shot and great passes by Arvydas Sabonis. Arvydas Sabonis is arguably the Greatest Basketball Center Ever Played.
This video is basically compiling the other channel's clips and remove those with bad video quality and audio quality, to make a clear version for Arvydas Sabonis’s compilation. So for the original video, you can refer to the following channel:

1988 wasn't the first time the American National Team was defeated in international competition... the distance between college basketball and FIBA basketball was practically non existent since the late 70s an beginning of the 80s... the 1988 defeat was the decissive moment of that process of FIBA improvement, because americans value the Olympics overall...
they don't care the same regarding, for instance, the World Cup, they lost more than once on that competition (I'm talking not only about college players back in the day, but also about NBA players nowadays) but american basketball fans don't know because they just care about NBA and some about NCAA.

Long story short Sabonis is in the top 5 centers ever. In his prime he was the best in the world. He could do anything.
Prime Sabonis was a problem. How a 7'3 center can play so gracefully? Those passes... Touch passes, Joe Montana outlet passes. Complete game. He was a beast!

He had great court vision could pass and make outside shots like Jokic. Was 1 inch taller than Abdul-Jabbar and could make hook shots. Could run like Giannis. Defend like Olajuwon and break backboards with powerful dunks like Shaq. Truly a complete center who was great at everything.
He was a slightly taller version of an uninjured Bill Walton.
Ok that's your opinion. So he has the best attributes all the great centers? Sounds ridiculous. He was definitely a great player but he never played against the NBA at his peak.
@@henrylee8510 I know I exaggerated it a bit. Nevertheless Sabonis was amazing and very versatile. He had a complete package, probably not as strong like Shaq, but close. But Shaq wasn't a great passer and did not had outside shot, not as good passer and shooter like Jokic, but was better defender and more athletic overall. Regarding competition in 88 Olympics he beat David Robinson. Who at a time was 22 years old and joined NBA next year. Sabonis was 24 at a time.
This guy literally has no weaknesses in his game. At 7'3" he could jump out the gym (during his prime), had post up moves like Hakeem, great court vision and can assist like a guard, good defense, can drain 3's, great career free throw shooter at 78%, not to mention he can dribble the ball too as I believe he actually started out as a point guard in his very early days. He really didn't have anything that was lacking in his game.

I think it's actually not hard to make a case that he's a top-5 all-time great player, at least when he was in his prime years. He was like a gigantic version of Larry Bird.
Hakeem didn't shoot 3's., but I agree with everything else you said. An argument can be made - and a good one - that Olajuwon was the best all around center of all time.

Sabonis is like Wembanyama in terms of their skill set. And you could argue Sabas was definitely the better passer but less of a dribbler.
Not the longest or with the biggest vertical presence, but huge, strong, athletic, and skilled. Even as a borderline crippled old man, dude was a very good center in the NBA who could use size, strength and positioning to contain PRIME Shaq better than anyone else in the NBA. Really missed out on seeing what this guy could do during the golden age of big men.
He was the original jokic! Probably the most unappreciated center in basketball history! Dude was amazing, and I loved watching him as a kid!!!
Arvydas was primarily a defensive center, an intimidating force and a rebounder... Jokic it's the opposite. Sabonis was also very gifted physically, taller, faster, quicker and stronger than Jokic.
They have in common the passing ability and overall skills and similar offensive style

I got to see Sabonis in person against Carolina when they barnstormed the US. They were IMPRESSIVE in person. with a pt guard like Marchulinus and power forward like Volkov, they were a juggernaut.
Saw him play with the Blazers long after this and he was still a Beast! that team gave Kobe and Shaquille fits!
They should have beaten them that one year but they blew a 20 pt lead in game 7 I believe. That was their year to try and win a title and they ended up collapsing in the 4th Q of game 7.
@@seancagney8897 The Blazers in those years had a lot of very good players in both the starting 5 and on the bench. They fell apart after losing that game against the Lakers.
@@seancagney8897 17 point lead by early part of the fourth quarter and by 15 around 9 minutes of the game 71-56. They lost the game and the series 84-89 because they missed 12 straight field goal attempts at one point.

I am the biggest Hakeem Olajuwon fan....to me he is the greatest center of all time,but man o man....if Sabonis would have been in the NBA sooner he could have been the top center at a time when centers where the gateway for the ball.
Thank you for compiling this. As I'm a former Portland Trailblazer fan, he is an all-time favorite of mine. We waited so long for him to come to Portland to play. I had heard how good he was when he was young and his knees were healthy, but had never seen footage of him playing. What a joy to see now! His son, Domas, born in my home region (Oregon) is now my fav NBA player, for Sacramento. Such magnificent passing for big men, both of them. Thanks again for posting!

Let's not state the obvious. This guy WAS and IS the greatest center of ALL TIME. Forget about him getting injured and not being able to tally stats. His stat tally would have been amazing. Jocic is a great center too but Sabonis was much more nimble and athletic. Just face it...Sabonis is KING!

Believe me I know all about Wilt. I am saying that Sabonis is the greatest all around player. Hey, Wilt led the league in assists one season! Sabonis came to the NBA as an older and very injury plagued player. He was a shell of himself when he was in the NBA. He was an awesome player.
Even after injuries he could still pass like a PG. If this version came to the NBA he would be up there with best centers of all time.

He was a great defender
I lived every moment and i can tell you that he was pure domination in every game he played and against anyone. He could pass, shoot 3s , rebound offense and defense, block shots, and score from anywhere! Most of all , everyone used to fear him back then in the days before the NBA. The same with Sabonis was Drazen Petrovic, and Nick Galis.

Arvydas Sabonis is a fucking MONSTER when he is young.
That clips is all compilation about his career before 21 (before his injuries).
He could post-up, could defend, could shoot from outside, could pass, could slam dunk, have great vision.
Even young David Robinson is no match of him.
He had given a tough time to the Admiral and led the team to 9-1 record, won the Silver Medal in 1986 FIBA World Cup Tournament.
Damn...if he were not hurt, he would probably be the one of the greatest center ever.

Bro he IS one of the greatest centers ever. 40 years later and people still talk about him.
In fact, He won the GOLD medal in Seoul’88 Olympic Tournament. Beating Admiral’s and Danny Manning’s USA, first; and Divac, Radja, Kukoc, Petrovic’s Yugoslavia at the final game. And all of this was AFTER injuries. He lost his Achilles’ tendons, but never his superb talent and unique vision.
Let’s not get crazy. Robinson was not outmatched. You can look up full game highlights and stats. Don’t be making things up to make a cool comment lol. Robinson outscored Sabonis in both the world championships and Olympic Games.
@@03Man11 Not getting crazy at all. Robinson could score more points then, yes; but Sabas' work was much more complet; by far: rebounds, blocking, vision, passing. The difference between both of them is much evident; even if David Robinson "outscores" Sabas in a particular game.

Not saying Sabonis wasn’t good or that he wasn’t a phenom. Im just saying that Robinson being outmatched is quite the stretch. Let’s not get crazy for the sake of making a cool TH-cam comment.
There's probably one or two rings that MJ doesn't have if Sabonis comes to Portland early on.
As a long time Portland Trail Blazer fan it kills me watching these highlights. The Blazers drafted Sabonis and had the rights to him through the late 80s and into the 90s. The Sabonis I see in these highlights would have been the perfect final piece the Blazers needed to win multiple NBA championships in 89-91. I think they even beat the Chicago Bulls teams.
Duckworth was a great center, but yeah could you imagine Sabonis on those teams

Sabonis was the most amazing passer. I still remember some of the crazy behind the head passes that he pulled off while playing for the Trailblazers. Amazing talent.
No kidding. Those Pistons and Bulls teams played nasty defense. Wonder how he would have held up. But I would like our chances better. Makes me sick still to this day. He was broken by the time he got to Portland, but still had a lot of skills.
As a Bulls fan and looking at his before NBA Stat lines and now this video. I say yes sadly. Would have been a easy call for Trail Blazers to have the edge over the bulls but have to think. Would have they allowed him to play big mins. Esp him and Drazen on the same team. Crazy Scary
He made David Robinson look tiny. He would have had Shaq-like impact had he moved to the NBA in his prime.
Shaq couldn’t hold his candle in the offense and pass assists. Not even close. Love Shaq but he was a terrible shooter and not known for good passing game. Shaq was dominant purely due to his physicality.

I’m sorry, I would take this cat over Shaq any day. Not even close!! Shaq was a huge liability at the free throw line and a terrible shooter overall. It just wasn’t Shaq’s game. He was unstoppable bc he was so damn big, strong, and athletic. But Arvidas Sabonis could have guarded Shaq 1 on 1 straight up in their primes. I can’t say the same the other way around.

If Sabonis comes to the US at 16 to play at a prep school instead of getting torn apart by the USSR he's probably a top 10 player in league history.
Easily top 5, assuming no major injuries.
Dude made The Admiral look small and had the skills to pay the bills. Dude at 31 with no knees and a physical wreck, was able to make PRIME Shaq work for his buckets. No Injury Sabonis would be straight up destroying shit, especially in the small ball modern era where he'd still have the athleticism to blow up PnR spam and shoot 3s well.

I believe he learnt a lot in Lithuania. He was undoubtedly the best basketball player in the history of the Soviet Union. If they had allowed him to play college basketball in the US, he would have been a top 3 pick in the NBA.

Look at what his son is doing, and he is way smaller both in height and in girth .
Arvydas was the only one in the league who could not be pushed around by Shaq, and that was already after big-time injuries and aging
NBA fans were robbed of the opportunity to witness a peak Sabonis.

Drazen Petrovic (86 draft)
Clyde Drexler (83 draft pick)
Arvydas Sabonis (86 draft)
Cliff Robinson/Jerome Kersey, or whoever at the power forward spot

I'm still wondering how many titles the Blazers would have won with Drexler, Porter, Kersey, Buck Williams and Sabonis... in the late 80s-early 90s. MJ would certainly have 3 or 4 fewer championships.

Sago is was a top top top player. One of the few that could stay in the 92 dream team without doubts . A center that can pass and shoot with that ability at that time was incredible . What a player!

Sabonis was really a "what if" player. Too bad the politics back in the days did not allow him to play at the nba in his prime, and before injuries diminished him.

@@smokescreenOG Would he be better than Jokic is now? Seems to be a better defender and obviously more athletic. Was he a comparable or better shooter than Jokic? Is he as consistent of a great passer as Jokic? He certainly looks more flashier as a passer, especially relative to his own era. Did he play with other good playmakers and in a system that didn't lend itself to generating assists? In Europe its harder to get assists, and offenses weren't tailored for a Center to dominate the ball as a scorer and passer.
I think he probably could have been at the Ewing level, if not better offensively for sure. I can't say he would be better than Hakeem or Prime Shaq, but just maybe slightly below their primes. Sabonis probably would have been better than Alonzo Mourning and near David Robinson tear, but not better than him overall. Probably could out play any Center ever on any given night.
@@Nikopas6 It's all hypothetical, since Sabonis never even got close to his prime. His prime years ended up being between 19-22 and then the injuries radically changed his athletic abilities; what if he continued to develop as a player to go with his athleticism? He has gone head to head with D Robinson and outplayed him thoroughly, so if that's a comparison we can judge on, then he could have potentially surpassed him on an NBA level. He had a higher more varied skill base and a higher IQ than most of his american opponents. Even in his limited physical body, he was a very good player for Portland. Jokic is a damn good player for modern NBA, but I would take a young Sabonis over him, strictly based on his defensive abilities.He also had great passing skills as a big man, and could have replicated the high-post flowing offense that Denver runs. All of this is a conjecture though.
There's a list with sabonis, grant hill, and len bias that had potential to be top 5 all time players but cuz of injuries, untimely death we'll never know...even an old arvydas sabonis with no knees, back problems & blown out achilles he still averaged 15 n 9 on a solid blazers team.
My favorite european player...He was Incredible..So Good so tough. He could run, jump. He was a dominate player..🤩🤩🤩🤩
Only NBA center who could possibly hang with him would be Hakeem, and even then it would be neck and neck. Passing elite, defensive instincts flawless, outside shot plus, paint athleticism and post moves unreal. I watched him post injuries with POR and was impressed, this is insane.
A healthy JOKIC couldn't block shots like a healthy sabonis! This sabonis was LARRY bird, jokic, Kevin McHale, all rolled into one. Political reality back then deprived us of seeing a great great player before age & INJURY
Sabonis was much quicker, more explosive off the ground & better at running the court than any of those guys.

Bucky Buckwalter, the Blazers GM that was instrumental in drafting Sabonis in the 80’s, has said that after completing his physical with the Blazers in the 90’s after they finally got him, the Blazers’ medical staff said he would qualify for a disabled sticker on his Oregon license plate. And he was STILL a beast.

@@zhugelianges that is how I have heard other nba and overseas pro players describe him in interviews and documentaries. He could shoot, handle the ball great, pass to create offense, defend to prevent it, but his body gave out before the NBA would draft him

When he finally got free and came to the NBA in 1996 at age 31 the Blazers team doctor famously said he "would qualify for a handicaped parking spot" because the damn soviet union ruined him by making him play through injuries. Just a shame. He would've been one of the greatest of all time and those early 90s Portland teams would've won a ring or 2 with a young and healthy Sabonis.
Arvydas was like putting Jokics brain in Kevin Garnetts body. Not that kg didn't have a crazy high IQ. But Arvydas just had a style of play and creativity that was unlike anything we'd seen stateside outside of bird and Magic.
Very athletic in his prime.

I've always said there was 3 huge "What Ifs" in NBA history. 1) Len Bias didn't die and played in the NBA!..2) Drazen Petrovic didn't die in his car accident on the precipice of greatness..3) If Arvydas Sabonis was allowed to play in the NBA in his prime.Even with injuries and passed his prime he gave Shaq work!
When he played in the NBA he already had knee surgery, we never saw his real potential with the blazers.
He was amazing! A hybrid of Bill Walton, Pete Maravich and John Havlicek. A GEM!
