The Philippines has made long-term plans to modernise its military, as marine disputes with China have added to the sense of urgency. For years, Manila’s efforts have been stinted by under-budgeting and the Covid-19 pandemic. Its three-stage Horizon programme, slated to finish by 2028, is now far behind schedule.

The Philippine military rank grew by 19 places, from 51st in 2022 to 32nd in 2023. For it to grow that fast in the span of one year and still have a backlog in modernization, it means that the Philippine military rank will grow even faster in the years ahead. The Philippines has a lot of orders abroad that have yet to be delivered. To name a few, these are the Brahmos supersonic missile, two more brand new frigates besides the two existing Jose Rizal frigates that are commissioned in 2020-2021, six new corvettes from HHI, and two new LPD ships and many more..

China spends the equivalent of the entire philippines gdp on its military every year. the philippines can sell their entire counrty and everything they own and still wouldent be able to outspend a single year worth of chinses military budget.
Why is a ant so eager to fight a Elephant/Dragon? heck i recently saw a report by the swedish think tank that china is lying about its military spending and is spending 700 bilion dollors a year on its military, you need 2 philippines sell them for allts its worth and only then can you match one years worth of the chinses military budget. and its not China only spend on its military one single year but every year china spend the equivalent of 2 philippines gdps on its military every year, rember Chinas gdp is 57 times bigger then that of the philipines why the delusion? with the current military budget of the philos of 4 bilion dollors it would take them 175 years to just spend one single years of chinses military budge

The Philippines has a history of being conquered several times by Spaniards, Americans, and Japanese. This kind of incident in the Philippines should have served as a reason for the past leaders to strengthen the defense of the Philippines, so that in the event that another country tries to occupy or claim our territories, we will be able to defend ourselves. But nothing has been done, so now we are pursuing the strengthening of our military as soon as possible.
Another thing is that if the Nuclear Power Plant in Bataan had been studied better instead of being shut down, we would have had nuclear technologies now and we would have had nuclear weapons that were very much needed at the time. I'm not saying let's fight with nuclear weapons, but that's a big addition to the national defense of the Philippines.
That's why hoping that the tension happening in the disputed island will be a reason for the majority to support the AFP modernization, especially those in positions in the senate and congress. Apart from the readiness to be prepared for the Chinese threat, it is also for a higher quality of protection throughout the Philippines.

Correction, the US will never allow the Philippines to ever develop nuclear weapons. Nor will the other nuclear powers of the UN security council. Such move will erode US foreign policy and security interests in the pacific. There's a reason south Korea and Japan doesn't pursue nuclear weapons development. Also ASEAN and southeast Asia have a nuclear weapons free zone enforce very strictly by Indonesia. Pursuing nuclear weapons development will make an enemy of our neighbors and Indonesia very angry. Besides all of this will be a clear violation of the non-proliferation treaty with which the Philippines is a signatory. Crippling sanctions will be put our way if we ever violate them. Only India was the only one historically to ever overcome such crippling sanctions when they pursued nuclear weapons.

It is a big impact for the ecomic perspective caused by the eccupation particularly the Sabah issue.

  • @ErenYega747

I don't think the Philippines should be faulted for having their military focused and tackling terrorism, insurgency, and disaster relief. If anything, those things should be tackled first, and if it's not, it just makes it harder for any non domestic threats to be dealt with too.
However, regular maintenance and upkeep of the military in response to global military developments (military modernisation of their neighbours both in North and South East Asia) and closing the gap should be done even if China didn't exist as a threat.
In regards to China, naval power is the first line of defense against amphibious assaults which the Philippines might as well leave to the US to handle. Land based forces aren't that relevant in the sea, which is the focus; the South China Sea is the main sticking point. Modernising the airforce and navy becomes more relevant for that.
The main concern domestically is the conflict in Mindanao in the Muslim majority areas, and the protracted "people's war" waged by Maoist Communists in the Philippines. So two conflicts to deal with. Modernisation of the military will definitely help with that.

If ever there will still be people around willing to tell what happened in Philippines' History before 1986, and before written history in local libraries and school books have been changed, you would actually know that the Philippines back then was on par with its neighbors even with its military arsenal and personnel. Then after 1986, when Cory Aquino came to office, you will know how she and her government changed many things, all that made the country fall into its knees, and that includes giving a measly budget to it's Military, selling gov't owned-assets to private companies who are Aquino-Cojuangco relatives and businessmen aligned with them, causing the perpetual rise in all local commodities, including oil and gas, electricity, water, house rents, food.... heck, with the military being underfunded and commanded poorly, we never knew China has creeped in territorial waters when it's too late to find out they have built bases within it. Yep, it all sounds political, which is partly correct, and the other big chunk of the problem is that the Media are not being truthful of what are actually happening, thanks to a bias Media. And just when people are getting better educated and more aware of things for the last 30 years, some still don't know much of their history cuz everyone is busy living and surviving with their daily lives while those from the leftist side who actually remember what happened and what they did for the past 30+ yrs just to to stay rich and in power, and hoping the Filipinos who are still living and witnessed those years before 1986 would forget. So now, even with the plan to revitalize the country's military strength since 2013, its so late, so expect things to go slow but getting there. Isn't that strange that everything that we have lacking in almost all sectors are given attention and funded, and are getting accelerated during the time of a Marcos in Power?

Mahirap masyaso umasa sa ibang bansa lalo sa Amerika dahil may interest din ang US at China sa isat isa lalo pag dating sa economy. May military relations din sila. Tingnan nyo APEC summit sa SF. Nag usap si Biden at Xi for normalization of relations between US and China. Kaya kung sa tingin nyo ipagtatanggol ng Amerika ang PH, malamang mag susupply lang yan ng armas pag nag ka gera pero NO US troops in PH soil. Just like Ukraine. Pilipinas ang gagawing battleground. The Philippines is racing to upgrade its military because it has been so left behind that it doesnt have the minimal defense posture needed in order to deter any enemy invasion. But still China has a nuclear arsenal in their part, they could just easily drop a nuclear bomb whenever they want if needed. But I agree on the latter part, I do think they won't go to war JUST YET because its economy will suffer that's why they have this Silk Road: Belt and Road Initiative to strengthen their economy, which will be beneficial for them in the future if they'll go into war. So still the Philippine Armed Forces need to strengthen their capabilities, at least on naval assets because that will be their first line of defense if there is an external threat.
