    Cheren is a Run Killer imo.
    He has Work Up for setting up to sweep, Bite for flinching issues, has no real weaknesses (Riolu and Mareep are rare in only one area at the time, Counter doesn't deal STAB or Super Effective damage and Paralysis is luck-based) and, in Challenge mode, has an Oran Berry along with an extra Pidove.

    • @FiboSai
      @FiboSai 3 ปีที่แล้ว +220

      Yeah, this is the one thing I think he got truly wrong, otherwise the list is pretty good. Lilipup with STAB Tackle, Work Up and decent attack for this early in the game deals a ton of damage to everything.

    • @GottaLoveShuckle
      @GottaLoveShuckle 3 ปีที่แล้ว +104

      Honestly I dont think he should of put the first gym of B&W 1 in free either. Again has work up, berries and a lillipup with STAB tackle. Idk how you can rank any gen 6 or 8 gym leader higher than any gen 5 gym leader tbh. You dont get enough options in gen 5 games, and the gym leaders generally have competent move pools capable of actually doing serious damage. That he ranked Olympia as tough in a game with free mega lucario, lapras and kanto starters whilst ranking certain gen 5 gyms so lowly is laughable.

    Cheren is absolutely a run killer: I know because he once wiped me SEVEN TIMES IN A ROW.
    The things that make him so difficult is you wont be going in with a full team, a lack of super effective options with a 5% chance Riolu being your only chance short of over leveling Tepig until it evolves, a severe lack of Trainer EXP beforehand meaning that you would need to grind for HOURS on low level mons on the ranch, stab tackle boosted by work-up, plus berries: Cheren is just designed to give you a hard time from the start.

      @Not LeshanaJr yeah unless you don’t get sewaddle considering you have 3 encounters coming up to that fight (not including starter). 1 of the routes you can only get patrat or purloin. It has a 35% chance on route 20 and it’s not in the ranch at all. So sure if you get it, it can be easy but you are not guaranteed one. If you also don’t get the riolu in the ranch then it can definitely be a tough fight.

    Yo I know this has probably been said, but I've done a lot of gen 5 nuzlockes so I'll just say why I think this.
    Cheren is definitely run killer at that stage in the game. Work up is a constant threat against your pokemon with no setup, level 12 doesn't let any pokemon come online no matter what starter you've chosen, and you only get a few encounters due to towns being practically locked for them until later. You lack type variety outside of your starter, and although you do get access to riolu technically, neither help you much offensively or defensively bc it doesn't even get fighting type moves at that stage if you're using level cap and is a relatively rare encounter in the ranch (5%). The worst part is that you can't prep for it really because you don't have the resources to do much outside of giving your pokemon oran berries and hoping for the best. And once he gets 1 or more work ups online, you just have to pray he doesn't decide to attack and wipe you. Ironically, it's the only way to really counter him, by playing around his set up moves and killing his pokemon while they're setting up. Extremely scary fight though, probably one of the tougher gym leaders if you have level cap or didn't pick tepig. Not to mention Challenge mode, which includes a pidove to counter any fighting types you bring (assuming you aren't using level cap) and an oran berry on his scariest pokemon; Lillipup, which is now level 14, super tough at that stage in the game. One of the only listed "counters" to his team is growling the pokemon who are setting up and hoping they get behind on set up moves/abusing their AI to attack while they set their attack back up.
    Also, Elesa is harder then people think due to there being no true counter for her outside of sandile or sandshrew with a rock type move (which needs to be sandshrew in challenge mode bc Joltik owns you with x scizzor otherwise). If you don't get one of those pokemon or they somehow die before the gym, which is rare bc they are common encounters but can still happen, you are royally fucked. Also, with sandile you have dig or sand tomb, the former being heavily exploitable bc she will switch manually into emolga, meaning you have to kill it first before just sweeping through with it which is really hard considering your options to do so, and the latter is just way too weak at 35 BP, although it will completely prevent her from switching her mons which can be nice. If you use a grass type, you'll be fine in normal mode outside of flame charge on zeb, but not in challenge mode bc emolga gets aerial ace and joltik exists again. Pursuit and zebstrika are also scary w/ flame charge and quick attack can snipe inexperienced player's low health mons if they're not careful. I'd say middle high of tough bc noob killer for sure.
    Sorry this was so long, I just know some stuff about nuzlockes in gen 5 and thought I'd share my personal opinions on some things.

But if you're playing casually or without level caps, yeah it can roll the gym. Still a very hard gym for that point in the game IMO, especially challenge mode.

      I recently finished a BW2 challenge mode hardcore nuzlocke run and I 100% agree with everything you said here. Cheren is an absolute menace, you get a bad encounter like Psyduck and your run might be over from that alone depending on the AI. I also agree that Elesa can be really tough, if you have some decent luck with encounters there are things like Magneton that wall 3/4 of her Pokémon and Sandshrew/Sandslash as you mentioned will be MVP here. If you also don't know what she's Volt Switching into it can be annoying to play around as well, since your Pokémon are most definitely going to be slower than her Emolga and Zebstrika.

    I am a strong advocate that Cheren is a pretty difficult fight:
    He has 2 main things going for him.
    The first is the very small pool of Pokémon you get before his fight. You can get 3 (plus starter) Pokémon before you have to face cheren to access more. One of them is a guaranteed patrat or purrloin. The other 3 could be as bad as sunkern and azurill. I will not say that you will always have a bad team going into the fight but most likely you will need to have done serious grinding for all your mons.
    The second is his team's unique strengths. Cheren has only 2 Pokémon, a level 11 patrat and a level 13 lilipup. These two on their own aren't too scary, but it boils down to them specifically in Cheren's hands. Not only does the level scaling climb pretty fast before his fight, but he utilizes his TM move that is not in the learn set, workup. This move unlike most other moves you get from gym leaders is horrific. It allows for both Cheren's mons to setup attack boosts for even more damage off of stab tackle. Meaning that you cannot attack this guy with one mon only, as a turn you spend to heal is one he most certainly will utilize to boost. The scariest part of this though is because of his lilipup. It has a very high speed stat and if allowed to outrun you, it can put you in a 2 shot zone for all of your mons.
    Despite this, he is a very achievable fight, given you have access to oran berries, unburden purrlion, and starters that can all do great things for the fight. But given you need to understand quite a few things, grind up for quite a lot of time, and have a game plan to ensure you won't get swept or bashed by the fight, I would say that makes Cheren a very formidable fight.

      If you didn’t have an entire wild area and route to go through allister’s team and it’s levels would make sense, but the way it is makes it so easy, especially if you get a zigzagoon early or choose Rillaboom which has knock off

    Elesa was the most difficult for me. You can get a ground type, but that only works on Zebstrika, so as soon as you try to use a ground-type move, boom, it's an emolga that's immune. Besides, the two rock-types available for her Emolga are also weak to electric-types. BW Elesa is a nightmare, personally worse than Whitney(Note: My team was whirlipede, timburr, servine, sandile, tranquill and archen)

    Here's my thoughts on a couple of the gen 7 ones since those are what I have the most experience with:
    The thing about Lana's trials (both Wishiwashi and Araquanid) is that if you have a plan, you'll probably be fine, but if a single thing goes wrong with that plan, you could easily wipe to either of them. I would say they go slightly higher than where you put them, but not by much. Araquanid can very easily be a run killer if you don't have one or two of a select few pokemon.
    For Ilima's trials, Totem Gumshoos is decently difficult but isn't really a run killer from what I've experienced. Totem Raticate would be more difficult, except that they give you the Brick Break TM right before the battle, which is 4x supereffective, so the battle is free if you have a pokemon who can learn it by that point.
    Hapu is very difficult and a potential run killer in SM, especially with level caps, but her battle isn't as bad in USUM (though still the toughest kahuna battle).

    Question, how does the Level Cap rule work for the Kanto Gym Leaders in GSC/HGSS?
    Janine has weaker Pokemon than the Elite Four after all, and you have to beat them before getting to her. And then the other Gyms can be done in any Order, all with pretty similar levels if I recall correctly. So, would you have to craft an entire team just for the Janine fight? And then you just kinda pick whatever hasn't overleveled yet for the other fights? They're essentially all weaker than Lance, now thatz I think about it. So there's essentially a changing Level Cap, shifting up or down depending on which Gym you're taking on? I guess that's how I would judge it.
    Regardless, I'd probably consider them all free, except Blue at the end. You get access to all of Kanto before faving any of the Gym Leaders, so you have an abundance of options.

      It's because she's really luck-based sometimes. I feel like she can either be nearly completely free or end your run. It just depends on how many Defense Curls + Milk Drinks she uses before she starts Rollout-ing. Even resisted, I don't think there's much at that point that wants to take the turn 5 rollout, especially if she managed to actually use the Defense Curl + Rollout combo. This is coming from the original GSC, though, where wild encounters are so low leveled that properly raising to her level can be a chore and you might not want to do it.

    Clair should be higher up. Her Kingdra is such a pain to fight, with Sniper any crit can easily be a death and it's bulky and basically has no weaknesses, so can be a true pain to take out. There's basically no dragon types (no fairy types too) to take advantage of, so you're left spamming whatever neutral moves you can. The mid game awful level curve in HGSS makes preparing for her fight a pain too. The Gyarados and Dragonairs are relatively easy if you have the right team members, but can easily cause deaths if you didn't get lucky with encounters

    Fun fact!
    You can beat Clay in BW2 (at least in white 2, idk if mandibuzz also works for this) with only guaranteed encounters, here’s how:
    There is a stationary Braviary on route 4 on mondays and guaranteed Drilbur in charge stone cave dust clouds, both of which can be obtained before the driftveil gym
    in order to make this work you must ev train the Drilbur/Excadril at least in speed so it can out speed clay’s Excadril. In my opinion the best place to ev train is on route 19, which only has Patrat and Purrloin, which give 1 atk and 1 speed ev respectively.
    Lead with Braviary against his Krokorok, you can outspeed and ohko with strength or return. Clay will then send in Excadril Because he sees the rock slide kill on Braviary, you can switch into your Excadril for free, outspeed, and one shot his Excadril with dig or earthquake. He will then send out Sandslash which you can switch back into Braviary and kill easily.
