I’m chiming in from Toronto. We first saw him live in Hamburg, Germany October 1977. I’d never heard of him, but my wife had. Just by chance a German magazine editor who had given me a freelance gig invited us to not only stay at his home but also to join him for an evening in Hamburg at a Leon concert. Unforgettable after 46 years.
Thank you so much, from the bottom of my heart, for posting this. The first time I saw Leon perform was on SNL doing ""Champagne Charlie". I believe that Jonathan Dorn was his tuba player on that. I was maybe 13 or 14 at the time. Seeing the show that night changed my life musically. I have since gone on to the interesting eclectic performers who aren't in the main stream. Seeing Leon in that show changed my life. I got to see him live probably about 14 times. This, despite the video quality, is as close as we can come to a truly "live performance" of Leon in concert at a small club. I thank you so much for your willingness to share this. You have made me so very happy. Blessings upon you and your loved ones. Sincerely, thank you.
john cline thanks you are cool! phillip, you are cool ! Leon is cool! yo,would you please turn me onto some deep cuts. i only learned of leon when i read his obituary don't make em like this anymore!. actually pretty sure never did! Bro is a time traveller!
Had the absolute privilege to see him live over a dozen times going back to the 1980s. He seemed to like a little club here in Buffalo, NY (probably because it's close to Toronto.) Always brought Top-Notch musicians and let them PLAY too. The consummate entertainer that always left you wanting more. He would sign anything (stubs/pics/t-shirt) for me. He was a fabulous ad-libber as well... Once took a cigar from me onstage and promptly "read" on the wrapper, "Compliments of Oliver North - thankyathankyathankya!" THEE BEST!!!!!!
What phenomenal guitar playing by Leon Redbone! God how I wish I could play a musical instrument like he did! And his incredible whistling ability beautifully enhances the songs he did!
most surrealistic hallucinogenic thing I have ever seen in my life bar none. Especially the tuba player in the dark that appears motionless but you keep looking and you see occasional movements. most hypnotic thing ever. Little did he know the effect it would have to do it in the dark.
maybe, sometimes its just a more informal or even rowdy setting, people feel good, wanna get up , get a drink, bathroom, whatever, it was certainly an enthusiastic crowd, i think they KNEW what they were witnessing, the one and ONLY...!
Suis-je vraiment le premier à laisser un commentaire à propos de cette perle? peut-être parce-que j'aime la guitare , le yodeLeon , la radio et que ce monde est habité par des brutes sans cœur et sans gout ?
What a unique and talented entertainer saw him on late night tv years ago have always enjoyed his music. Kinda funny how we could enjoy music from a time so lo g ago. Its not like classical its ragtime & old blues go figure. Just love it old Jimmy Rodgers 1 of my dads favorite & mine too along with Leon Redbone 2 of a kind
1982 or 3, Lexington, KY. Leon plays a great first set. Crowd is on fire. No Leon. About 5 minutes later, the man comes out and asks "do you want to hear some more music"? He pulls out a transistor radio, turns it on, put it in his chair and is GONE...😎😎

Slap Like if you're cooler than the other side of the pillow.
I never thought I would see the Sari Barabas act by Leon again. I saw him do that live at the Iron Horse in Northampton, MA sometime in the mid 80's and I love it as much now as I did then. Thank you again for posting this this live concert.
Thank you John for posting this event at the Golden Inn. Seeing Leon live is one thing that I missed doing. I have been a fan of Leon since he first started showing up on the late night TV shows. We have lots of his albums on vinyl! His death was a shock, as we have lost a true genius and unique performer. You have given me the chance to see his complete performance, an hour and 15 min. of great fun!!!! Thank you again John!!!
Sheik of Araby had such fantastic playing I could forgive being almost unable to see him play it! Loved him since the Champagne Charlie album. At the time I equally loved The Damned - if its good its good.
I had a chance to speak with Jonathon Dorn, and get his autograph. He said that Leon never did the same show twice, and I believe him. What a great entertainer!
Some people are just born to entertain.....and the rest of the world is blessed! RIP Leon. What joy you gave the world. John Cline - thank you very much for sharing this incredible show. I'll be listening and watching it for a long time to come I hope - and will be much happier for it! :)
I am so glad this recording was made. Super talented and hilarious especially Branch to Branch. I never had the pleasure of seeing him live, this is the next best thing. Thank you, thank you.
I never heard about this guy before ....I feel as if people were watching him only to laugh ...but ...damn ...he was a fucky genius ...what a master in the guitar...what a great way to play the trumpet w/out a trumpet ...vocalizing it ...what a voice modulations ...great, great ...super.
This is truly a wonderful recording. John Cline are you able to make this this available to buy (?via Leon Redbone's Estate). The quality & essence of his unique talent, that I was so fortunate to experience 'Live' twice here in the UK, is captured in this recording. Fabulous. My all-time favourite musician.
When a person pays good money to SEE a performance, I would have felt ripped off. I think the venue should have negotiated his demand to some acceptable level...
There was plenty of available stage lighting but Leon Redbone insisted on a single 60-watt bare light bulb overhead, it produced sufficient light to see him live in the venue but wasn't nearly enough light for an early 80s video camera, they required a LOT of light to produce a decent picture. I posted this on TH-cam mainly because the audio is perfectly acceptable.
Redbone plays guitar almost as well as Chet Atkins. And he _sings_ complicated vocals while doing it! Ridiculous talent. The Tin Pan Alley spirit really lived in this guy. No hipster/pink-haired uke-playing busker fake crooning Billie Eilish's "Ocean Song" can even come close. All of the great 19th/20th century traditions of art in the West are truly being lost to plastic, talentless modernity.
You are absolutely correct, I have updated the song list to give Anton Karas the credit he deserves. Chet Atkins also did a version of this song but it doesn't have the distinctive zither intro of the original Anton Karas version. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.
Please someone...make a movie on him!! I know that there is a 15 minute documentary on him. But, he was so unique, fun, entertaining. Not like Some auto-tuned crap that is out there now. 🤨 Yes...there is some good modern stuff too.
I think he liked to have a drink with him on stage but as he got older his dementia was getting worse and people thought he was drunk but it was the dementia and not alcohol. Poor guy left us way too early.
@Jay Silverheals @@generalpatzer6893 It was a condition known medically as alcohol induced dementia. Both my parents had it, although later in life than Leon.
In the beginning he seems a little like he is trying to get paid for listening to a little more of Harry Lime! Not really, no one could do what he did without loving it!

Saw Leon for the first time on December 2, 1973 at the Guthrie Theater (Walker Art Center) in Minneapolis. Became a lifelong fan.

One of the best things on the internet.
Leon is as inscrutable as he ever was in this very insane and amazing performance! Thanks for posting.
Add all the trimmings to fabulous, fantastic, and fascinating and you get Leon. What a legend and sadly missed.
When the 2 pixel camera was king, so was Leon Redbone! I was convinced at one point he was really Zappa in drag.
I saw him in Des Moines, Iowa, 82 and 83. He was fantastic put on a hell of a show.
12:25 to 15:05 - When A Bird Flies From Branch To Branch - left me dumbfounded, and in tears with laughter. What an entertainer.
The sound is still there.

Charles Leak you say you missed seeing Leon Redbone live. Judging by this video, it was so dark that I would guess most of his audience did too...
Great audio. leon can play some guitar. Nice arrangements and beautiful whistling.
Egyszerűen fantasztikus. Szerintem Ő a világon az első zeneparodista. És még van Whits Queens of Nem Orleans is. Le a kalappal a teljesitménye előtt.
An immensely enjoyable performance of amazing talent. Thank you Leon!
