g, u and Honey were a couple of my 1sts..sent me on a journey! TY for a sweet revisit..for this super fine live show..u all r better than ever!! Keep on keepin on!!!
Thank you for posting this gem of a recording! I have played harmonica 46 years and was playing full time at age 20 in San Diego as base. This combination and era of The Mighty Flyers would be my preferred one. I am a friend of Henry C. his current guitar who is great as well but love to hear the tasty lines that Alex S.. always brings to the mix!
Thanks for making this fantastic video of THIS AMZING BAND.---Honey might be one of the absolute best Boogie-Woogie pianist in the entire kingdom. ...and A. Schultz, J. Bott and B. Stuve, w/ Rod P. It just don't get any better.
Wow! I met Rod, Honey and band via Pee Wee Crayton. I used to go with Pee Wee to a lot of his gigs in the 80's. What a pair back and forth Rod and Honey and so happy to see their still rocking the blues. Pee Wee is smiling at the right now. We had some crazy and fun times back then at the small clubs. Charles Campbell
Jimi bott,Alex schultz, both with William Clarke, for years. Then rod piazza and honey.so much talent for one band. Unbelievable .great audio and video.thank you.from Spike,Portland Or.
That's AWESOME! I'm jealous I watched them as the house band at Carlos O'Brien's restaurant in Riverdale, CA Rod did a harmonica solo walking on the bar one night. Oh the memories!
Seems to me that Rod is here in the period before the developement of his line of HARP KING amplifiers... 😉🙂 this incarnation of the band was imho the best... Alex Schultz is a monster guitar player... 😉🙂
1960 Fender Concert Amp all the way! A bit smoother and "browner" tone than the 1959 Bassman amps ( I have owned and gigged with about 5 Concerts and about 8-9 original Bassman Amps) but a great full sound. Blends great here with the Stand-Up Bass and keys too!
Yes, most likely a 1960 since they had some shared internal transformers and Jensen P10Q speakers as the 1960 last year Fender Tweed Bassmans. I have played harmonica 46 years and was full-time pro by age 20, have owned about 4 of these Concerts and about 8-9 original Bassman amps too. Rod played Bassman amps back then too.
Please could someone enlighten me: is the most talented Miss Honey his wife, his sister or his daughter? I would assume that this was a husband and wife team like Junior and Tanya Brown but would like to be sure. She certainly is avery talented pianist with a pretty individual style!
this is my best memories from that era ... it's so awesome that you are just now discovering it... thank you and the gang for being the best traveling band in history
@@JohnCline thank you for having the insight to both record this and save it for all time this is the single finest recording of the best Mighty Flyers lineup of all time .
There wasn't a lot of light in the club and it was coming through unflattering yellow and red colored gels, I made the choice in post production to convert it to black and white, I thought it gave the video an appropriate vintage feel. The audio was done by my partner Phil Appelbaum.
NEVER TOPPED not by William or Kim IMHO and those 2 go down as greats with Musselwhite and Butterfield - Kim's feature in Germany 1982 here on YT and William with Fats and Smokey Wilson are well wroth mention. George Smith such an iinluence on Wm and Rod but daresay he is not well represented on YT
The fattest tone, the most drama, & the funkiest phraser over all the years - Piazza in a way unlike Kim Wilson sends other sessions over the top - Smokey Wilson and Shakey Jake the 2 that I think of - I am sure it's Rod on that Michele Shocked track that had the harp - then Dred Zeppelin had a harp performance that I thought must be Rod.
Alex Schultz - Always a tasteful BEAST on guitar!
OMG. What a fantastic treasure for any Flyers fan! It's perfect. My favorite juke joint live act ever.

OK GET to the 21:00 mark Harmonica People - then, listen close - because IMO, funkier has not happened.
so... is rod playing thru a early sixty's fender concert?
Yes, most likely a 1960 since they had some shared internal transformers and Jensen P10Q speakers as the 1960 last year Fender Tweed Bassmans. Honey is his wife.
Boy, can Rob Piazza sing.
Wow- where on earth did this come from??
It's been sitting in my tape archives ever since I recorded it live over 28 years ago.
this is my best memories from that era ... it's so awesome that you are just now discovering it... thank you and the gang for being the best traveling band in history

Great sounds! Too bad the color was lost.
