Nice tutorial for beginners. I only think that the static grass application is a problem for beginners, because they probably will not have an applicator :)
Very nice video. My personal experience is that you do not necessarily need to have a static applicator to obtain good results. Using a small metal colander like those used in the kitchen with a small mesh would give you a good spreading of static grass. Keep up these good tutorials.
The application of static grass goes on faster but one can use the pinch & place method- pinch thumb & forefinger into grass bag then place onto Diorama..
I am watching this late in the day because I can't sleep, however watching this makes me realise why modelling is a thing of beauty and the time and heart it goes into making it. Despite the fact I don't have polystyrene I am using a flat piece of wood, simply because this is going to be my first diorama and I don't want to do anything fancy. Thank you so much for this video, I think that honestly it is so nice to see so many people dig deep into model making and making craft from the heart. I lost my Father early this year whilst I was struggling in general with everything, but he gave me a lifeline - the enjoyment of model making and I never have lost that passion now! I do model making in memory of my Father, because if it wasn't for him, I would be in a much more darker place. By the way, I hope wood is ok when making a diorama!
I've been getting into the gunpla Hobby and wanted to start making my own dioramas for when I get good and want to compete. Thanks to you I have a perfect starting point. I'm sure you have heard it enough from a lot of people, Thank You!
Here is the video I've been looking for and glad to see yours in the top search results. So learning from you now. Thanks a lot for the intuitive and easy to perceive content!
You could have mixed the 5 mm grass in with the 3 mm grass for a somewhat more realistic effect? Just an option to consider. Personally I prefer a cement/sand mix over plaster, for it is so much more durable. Another option is mixing the paint in with the plaster so when chipping may occur you don't have unseemly white spots. Keep up the great work 👍
I had a follow up question just curious what is your opinion on using air dry clay over the water and gypsum mixture and con or pros for either? Sorry I’m relatively new to the diorama scene and still trying to learn more.
Thank you for this video, good work ! At 5:42 the gravel has a nice color 👍Is it natural gravel or buy commercially ? When for a swamp diorama video ?!
I was wondering , I’m doing a World War One diorama with a trench , where do you get your extended polystyrene? And do you have any advice on how to make the trenches
My mistake in comments, it is extruded polystyrene, not expanded. You can purchasse it in your local building materials store. re trenches, you should check my new video th-cam.com/video/Y74Dj8m2mZ0/w-d-xo.html
There are different options, there are a lot of products, such as acrylic pastes, special clays in hobby stores. I prefer gypsum, it is easy to work with and is a fairly cheap option.
I didn't quite understand your question. Grass remains only on those places where the glue was applied. The rest can be simply removed when the glue dries.
Sorry, lol, I am bad at explaining things, I have had my diorama and grass is still falling off, is there a way to get the grass that is not glued down to fall off?
After the glue has dried you just turn the base over and tap it the loose grass will fall off then turn it over again and use a low power vacuum cleaner to take off any more loose grass You can put a stocking over the nozzle so you can collect the grass to use again
I don't think i've come across gypsum before... what am I looking for at the local hardware store? When I google, I find gypsum mixed soils but not this gypsum powder.
@@FORTworkshop It's surprisingly uncommon here in Australia, I had to order it from an interstate store, for the super fine granulated stuff. Can find gyprock down to pebble side but not the gypsum powder type stuff, at our home hardware place. What ratio was your mixture of water/gypsum/pva glue? Gonna do my first test run tomorrow.
Great video, thank you. Is "diorama building" still a thing on TH-cam? is there an audience for it? What is the average CPM? It takes a lot of effort to build dioramas, would be disappointing if there are no subscribers or the CPM is like $5 or lower.
@@s8n_in_crocs very few people do it for “fun”. even the ones that say they do it for fun have a patreon account 😀 It’s ultimately all about money, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Thank you. I'm thinking about getting into this hobby for my retirement and didn't know how. Looks simple enough that even I could do it.
You will definitely succeed!
Thank you so much
For two whole nights sat up searching how to do the base like mad and was going insane so thank you for being so easy to understand

You can built one watching some video on you tube .and it's not expensive doing it by yourself.

Flat Corkboard works great as a ground surface. it's easy to shape and use for layering.
Actually never tried. Not sure, that it is easy to shape, as you mention

Will be using this in a future godzilla diorama I want to make! thank you!
That just gave me an idea.
If I apply water on top, will the paint go away, or is it water resistant?
Depends on what kind of paint do you use.

Gonna make me a killer battle of pharsalus for a school project thanks to you!
Could I use xps foam for the base if I don't have expanded polystyrene?

what gypsum powder do you use?
Regular building plaster
