In this video, Ankit Goyal (Co-Founder of Kreatryx and AIR 1 in GATE 2014) explains how to place the directional and non-directional relays in a power system. There is a myth that we can directly place directional relays at load end and non-directional relays at source end but that is not entirely true so a fool proof method is described to determine the position of relays.

    Mr. Ankit
thank you thank u and thank u for the excellent video and all the effort u put together to let everyone fully understand how the directional relay works.
    I greatly appreciate it.
I have couple questions if you don't mind
10 based on your explanation then relay 7 is non directional then we can added it to relay 1 and 6 to be back up to relay 4 correct?
2)please if u don't mind can u upload couple problems about the directional relays so we can be perfect about any questions either conceptional and problems?
please please reply and don't ignore me
all your videos are helpful and grateful to me

If possible, make a video on CT class classification ie, class: 5P20, X, PX TPS on different characteristics & which class CT used for exact protection. Eg; 5P20 using for overcurrent protection, why? & class :PX using for differential protection, why? What is different between those class CT's.

how come relay 2 is directional....relay 4 is directional that can be understood coz at R4 direction of current flowing changed but u said similarly at R2 also directional relay....according to the given condition when fault occurs between 3 & 4 current at R2 doesn't change its direction so how come directional relay?

Sir I understood whatever u taught us...but why Relay 7 cannot be used as a backup Relay...in the video u told that as 1 and 6 are nondirectional Relay they will detect fault and then operate...in the same way if we consider the load to be passive then 7 must be nondirectional and therefore it can also be use as a backup....sir plz reply sir...after this I'll be 100% confident in this topic

Sir you have done a mistake the source side relay must be directional relay because if the fault occur in between of the source and the first relay from the left side of the circuit the current flow in opposite to the original rated current and relay trip but if the fault some where else in the circuit if it is a non directional relay it get trip which is not desired so it must be directional with the tripping when over current flow toward the source.

  • @ЕвгенийБоталов-э8л

What?! Protection must be directional since the line have both side supply! If you want to make it nondirectional you have to coordinate it with maximum fault current in reverse direction.

Why we can't simply use non-directional relays? Fault currents are anyways going to be large enough for them to be detected by non-directional overcurrent relays and since they are insensitive to direction of current, non-directional relay would also have worked?!? Sir, I'm really thankful to all of yr videos BUT it looks you've got few problems in here. GATE question specifically mentions directional *overcurrent* relay and not reverse power relay (both of which falls under directional relays) while what you explained was reverse power relay. Sir, to put it simple language, if it is just about locating fault we could've easily used non-directional relay as I said earlier. It is due to the reason of discrimination ( least outage) that we use directional overcurrent relays. In fact some old GATE question asks to make selection so that it'd give _proper discrimination_.
Though ans is correct, this is the reason that this method of coming to answer doesn't works for ring feeders and for faults to the left of left most breaker while in practice it'd be perhaps place with highest fault severity. I'm no one to claim more knowledge than you but I felt I should put my opinion here.. Thanks for all of your other videos, they're immensely helpful.

Non-dir relay will operate for faults in any direction.

Instead of saying current is going to generator. You should say power is going to generator.
Current is sinusoidal, it has not a fixed direction in any situation. But, power has.
Please, someone correct me if i am wrong.
