  • Also, removing the rear seat (bottom and back). I can usually rely on my Haynes manual to give me all the necessary info, pictures and whatnot but they came up short on this one. Searching around the net it seems im not the only one who wasnt quite sure how to go about this one. I decided i would share some pics and video of this EXTREMELY EASY repair.

    Some additional helpful hints with this repair. Purchase a small plastic bottle which is clear like a Ketchup bottle which has a nose to fill the pump. Cost a $1. Use an old pizza box under your work for easy clean-up, pick up and throw away. Lastly pump's plug, the top of the rubber plug tore off so I purchased from Ace Hardware a rubber cork plug which has a v shape so can push it until you have a tight snug fit, it worked excellently. Also there 3 clips at the top of the seat 1 in the middle

    I just saw your video and went out to my sebring and took the back seats right out. I used a 11/16 socket with impact wrench and had all removed in 10 minutes. Thanks for the video.

    Thank you, thank you. I also did as a 1 man job. Placed an oil drip pan below the pump used a weight to hold it upright in the pan. Used a squeeze bottle to add the fluid. I used a small screwdriver to gradually push the plug back in side to side. Top works!

    Hey thanks for posting this. Three years ago? Gee. anyway I remember doing this with my old '88 Cavalier Z-24 but I used brake fluid instead. This time I did as suggested and used ATF. Followed your recommendations and now my '01 Serbring's top goes up and down all the way and quietly as it should.

    Thanks for this video. I just filled the pump motor of the top, and now it works great. I had a hard time pulling up the bench seat, but I found out that a long, thick screwdriver will work if you put it right in the center of the U-shape hook under each seat placements and pull up hard. Once again, thanks for this video, which probably saved me at least $300 bucks by fixing it myself.

    Just did this work yesterday. Worked great! Filled to the top but then the plug wouldn't go in so I had to take a little out to make room for the plug.

    Thanks a lot for this helpful vid. My
    04 mustang gt vert top would lower but not raise. I was going to replace the motor but I did a search and found this vid. This an extremely easy job that anyone can perform that only took about an hour. Now my top works perfectly!

    no problem at all, im VERY glad to hear that you had some help. its a bear trying to get the filler plug back in place.
    also, i forgot to mention, when i made the video, that the motor is REALLY loud.At first i thought it might have been dying on me and contributing to the problem but thats just how loud they operate. once the sound insulating fabric and the seat are back in place everything sounds normal.

    Just bought a 2002 convertible Sebring, top works beautifully now and sounds very quiet so maybe I won't have any problems too soon, but figured I'd watch this video in case I do have this problem in the future, thank you! My only question is how do you know if the pump is low? Will it simply make noises and not move when you try to operate it?

    one more thought since its spring time, this model is rather notorious for having water drainage problems. After a heavy rain you might want to take a spin around the block and listen for sloshing sounds coming from the rear of the vehicle. They will be most noticable at sharp stops and starts. If the problem crops up, youll want to clear out the weep holes along the underside of the body and drain the area in front of the rear wheel wells.

    I knew the punp was low on fluid but had no idea where it was. this video made figuring out all the necessary info and the steps completely painless. Thank you!
    PS. for those who don't take it apart before buying the trans fluid... mine is a 2002 and on the pump it says replace with dex-II (it might say it in the video and I just missed it)
    Also if you buy a quart size of fluid, I found that the top to most gear oils fits perfectly, giving you a nice small pour spout

    If you pinch the plug it will go in easier almost trying to bend it in half.

  • @peggyzum

    yay!! but it's not necessarily a two person job - I did it and I'm a blond! ;-) I was almost disappointed when I filled it, then raised the top to close it, but then it stopped mid-way with no sound or motion, and I thought, shoot, it's the motor. but then I realized..... with the small amount I used to fill, is now in the lines, (I used an infant's ear syringe) so I needed to continue filling after it raised a little. And viola! it's working! Yer right - the plugs were buggers!

    I've got a 96 Sebring and where the top folds into has a place for water draining and it seems be filling up somewhere and causing flooding some where. Have you ever seen a place this could happen?

  • @1tallncoolguy
    @1tallncoolguy 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's pretty much for sure that that's the problem. I had that problem, and it was that the pump motor was almost dry on fluid. Read my comment on this video for more details.

    the fluid that is in it now is clear like brake fluid, should the fluid that is in it be drained prior to adding the dex. 2 fluild or will they mix together with no problem

    • @3243F6A8885A308D3131
      @3243F6A8885A308D3131  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Its probably brake fluid, that used to be pretty common. i wouldnt mix the fluid types.
      if you can figure out what is in there now and top it off with more of the same, that would be best. If you cant be certain... im just not qualified to give you advice beyond showing you what worked for me.
      Call some chrysler dealerships and talk to a mechanic whos worked on your year. Better yet, take a small sample of your fluid into your dealership and see if they might take a look.

    can you use hydraulic oil for refilling the pump on a 2004 Sebring conv.

    • @RobHarvFam
      @RobHarvFam 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, absolutely not. You can however use any grade of transmission fluid as it is essentially the same as hydraulic fluid. Do NOT put oil in the pump.
