    I know a couple of ways you can shave another few grams, both motor plates front and back could have some holes and chanfers drilled into them, I don't think it will affect the strength of them in a significant way.
    Also there is very last part of your exhaust could be aluminum instead of copper so that would save a few grams as well.
    That being said, you've done a damn good job and I really look into seeing that thing run!

    • @M5PerfHydros
      @M5PerfHydros  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah... Don't think I hadn't thought of those things! First, the motor mounts seem to be some super low grade aluminum, no doubt to allow the bends without breaking, and I felt they were already so weak that any lightening might weaken them too much.
      Similar result for the exhaust, though I'm still considering it. An aluminum tube of similar strength requires a much thicker wall and I found the brass was actually lighter. Perhaps I can get away with a thin wall aluminum tube, and I may yet try it!

    • @M5PerfHydros
      @M5PerfHydros  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Dang Gary, I don't remember in which video I detailed that, but it's in my library of videos somewhere. Briefly, I install a vertical piece of .030 or .040" G10 to the floor and stringers and up through the deck about 3/4". The uprights are open on the bottom and fit down over these G-10 pieces. I drill through the uprights and the G-10 and use two nylon 6-32 screws to attach each upright, passing through the fiberglass upright and threading into the G-10. In a blowover the nylon screws will shear instead of breaking the uprights or the G-10 mounts. Slick!

    Hi Scott, I ran across one of your pit tour videos, I been watching your videos for last couple of weeks. I really appreciate your love for the hobby. I’m a rc’r myself. I have built airplanes, helicopters, fiber glass power boats and sailboats throughout the years. Now I’m inspired from watching your videos. I think I’m ready to build a wood hull kit. I love nitro power and would like to build a hull around a .67 rossi. What would you recommend as first build?

    • @M5PerfHydros
      @M5PerfHydros  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome! Let's build boats!
      So are you thinking of a hydroplane or some other type of hull? If it's a hydroplane that you have in mind the Nova Rossi 67 is a great choice. Be extremely cautious during break-in though since they are super tight when they're new. I take mine apart and lap the piston to the bore with 800 grit lapping compound to greatly reduce the break-in time.
      But I digress (as usual)....
      If you're building your first hydro I'd suggest you build a 70's style boat, 1/8th scale, picklefork design with no wings. They are the easiest to build and best handling boats by far.
      The best place I know of to buy wood kits is MLBoatworks;
      mlboatworksrc.com/
      Take a look at the MHR (Master Hull Roster) 8255 hulls. These have been the best all-around hulls I think.
      Many good fiberglass boats and cowlings are also available from RC Boat Company;
      rcboatcompany.com/
      Between these two you should be able to find almost anything you'd want!

    I just bought an ML kit 173 hmr 8700 it fits together perfectly. I do have a couple of questions ???? Most boats I’ve seen have the engine tub is offset to the left this one the engine tub is offset to the right ????? And no I didn’t build it wrong, I swear ! So do I center the engine in the tub and do I run the drive shaft into the center of the tub or the center of the transom ?

    • @M5PerfHydros
      @M5PerfHydros  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm... When you order it you specify which offset you want. You must've gone the wrong way. On 1/8 scale I offset engine and strut 1/4" to the left, 3/8" on gassers. Not sure how you'll pull that off now, but at the very least you need to get everything centered. Time to get out the Dremel!

    Ive been enjoying your videos for a while now. Been in modeling most of my life, but never boats (built several, just never put them in the water). Anyway, I was wondering why the boats seem to all be built out of wood, with a thin FG layup rather than full FG with a few strategically placed wood stringers? Is it a class rule? Is weight the issue? It just seems that it would be little extra work to use the first build as a plug, make a mold, and then pop out a new boat or part there of anytime you felt like it. Obviously, you're already doing that with the cowels.

    • @M5PerfHydros
      @M5PerfHydros  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question! I used to build fiberglass boats, but I find I can make them much lighter from thin ply. Also much easier to repair after the inevitable crash. Lastly, I never build two boats the same, so a mold and the ability to make a copy doesn't interest me!
