Step 1 : watch noob tips videos all week.
Step 2 : mentally prep and static balance practice
Step 3 : realize there is no flat/beginner area where you just got your pass
Step 4 : go down the mountain anyway and faceplant about 40 times
11/10 would learn to board on the way down again.

Dragoon876 I couldn't have worded that better myself, that's exactly how I learned luckily the snow was soft when I fell which also could have contributed to the snow eating my board

my first time, i was all over the ground. i was too afraid to just try to control what i was doing till the very end of the day, finally was able to slow down and make it down without falling, but its very addicting. the pain i was in was by far the worst i have ever taken a beating to my body. i couldnt walk or do much moving around at all. but i dont regret it

This was exactly me my first day down a mountain. What's worse is that I had no one to show me and didn't do much (any) prep work before hand. Even just watching videos like this one would have helped me a lot.
I made it down the mountain the first day, but damn if I didn't pay the price for it. Still worth it.

I had the same experience, it was like trying to tame a wild horse, but then i started to learn how to slow down, facing the hill. Haven´t quite learned how to slow down with front facing downhill. Should have seen this vid before.

Ronnie Espinal I think this happens to a lot of people when first snowboarding. When I first started, I wanted to just quit at lunch (about half way through the day) and I asked someone else and they said they wanted to quit at lunch too when they first started. I kept going and finally by the end of the day I could do it lol. I couldn’t go on the ski lift until the third time going!

Can't believe this video was posted back in 2014. I keep watching it over and over again. I'm a long time skier, and at the end of the season the last few years I'll take a snowboard lesson and try to make it down the hill. Last season Ski Patrol carried me down in a sled when I tried snowboarding on an easy slope (the ice got me), think I bruised a rib -couldn't do enough of a crunch to get my feet out of the bindings. This year I've tried snowboarding at the beginning of the season and just working through the 10 skills, at my own pace on the bunny slopes. Way better than the lessons I had. After watching a few other videos about stance- binding angles and width, I changed my board setup and decided to give goofy foot a try. It's amazing the difference. I'm now having fun playing and learning to snowboard - at my own pace, going through your 10 skills. With my flow bindings, I'm always starting out facing the Mtn, so I'm getting comfortable on toe side. Can't wait to figure out how to get to my heel side. Even 6 years after you made this video - THANKS!!!

Thank you so much for all these videos. I watched so many in preparation of my trip to Copper Mountain. I took a lesson and by the end of the first day I was carving, riding switch, and even went off a few small jumps. We even went down a blue during my lesson. I did fall a lot, but crash pants really helped. I'm absolutely hooked.

Been watching your videos for a few days now. I'm the most beginner of snowboarders that there is but I'm a huge mountain biker that needed something to fill that adrenaline void in the winter here in Minnesota. Anyway tonight was the first night out, and there were lots of spills but a lot of progress as well. A lot of that is thanks to your videos. Keep up the awesome work!

This is so helpful! Thank you so much. I took two snowboarding lessons 3 years ago. I fell a lot! Didn't try snowboarding after that. Yesterday I went for another try and decided not to take another lesson. I watched this video and 2 another videos in this channel. Memorized them by heart. I nailed the beginner's skills once I got on the slope immediately, which I couldn't figure out 3 years ago. Falling in love with snowboarding!

I practiced all of these steps on my second day of trying snowboarding for the first time in my life. I’m 47 yrs old.
They all work, they’re all key factors, and they helped me immensely.
The sensation after you master the basic turns and you dare straighten up your board downwards and let gravity do its stuff to gain speed, and then turn, turn, turn, turn at comfortable speed, is indescribable. I’m in love.

I watched this video and another beginner one you did with "do these 3 things". I went to the slopes and didn't kill myself and was able to get down the mountain going back and forth on my heels. I was basically chest forward down the mountain all day. Came home, watched your vids again, and found a practice area at Copper Mountain for $20 and spent 3 hours there practicing everything in these vids. And as a 46 yo man that's sort of athletic but grossly out of shape, I have to say I'm rather proud of myself for how I ended my day. I can glide on my toes and heels now. Stop, get up, walk up a mountain, get on/off lifts, skate around on 1 foot. IDK man, you guys just make it easy. Thanks for the tips, looking to take everything I've learned to the mountain tomorrow. I have probably only fallen about 10 times also in 2 days.

I wanted to thank you for making a succinct but extremely informative video. As a former skimboarder, I always wanted to try snowboarding but never took any opportunities. This past weekend, I got on a snowboard for the first time in Utah. Coupled with a 2 hour lesson from an excellent instructor, this video was key in helping me pick it up in 1/2 day. By the end of day 2 I was not falling at all and on day 3 I took on the green runs at Park City with a lot of confidence.
I plan to check out your more advanced videos going forward since I fell in love with snowboarding this past weekend and will definitely be doing it again. Thank you!

Hey Kevin, wanted to thank you for these videos! Decided to get on some snow for first time ever (being in canada im shocked it took me this long). Buddy of mine said he would "teach" me. First day was ok so this is how you skate and then you just use your edges when turning. Then GO. After a day of falling and bruised tailbone and knees. I decided to use youtube as a teacher. And found your videos and what a help it was 3rd time out i managed to make it down a few runs without bailing at all. Turns are still fairly wide and need to slide a bit to control speed but hey practice makes perfect.
Anyway just thought I'd let you know these videos are great for learning and have helped me a lot.

It's was pretty good! I fell a lot but it was lots of fun! We took a chairlift up half the mountain and I didn't fall when getting off (my first time taking the lift) . It took us an hour and a half to get down but it was fun and I managed to do a few turns.
I will say though, I think my butt prefers skiing just a BIT more. ;)

Watched this last night, snowboarded today morning. Here is my feedback:
The video was actually really helpful! Especially tips 1 through 7. 1 through 5 is what you'll be doing in the first 15 minutes.
Now, i won't lie, it's weird at first. You don't know you balance points, how to use your legs, waist and shoulders. You gonna be going straight for a couple of meters (at best) and fall. But you gonna be getting better each time!
What i noticed, is that for almost-flat ground, you gonna be doing 9 A LOT. You still can't control your board, so enjoy the ride before you fall. (my tip for turning? Put lots of strength on the correct foot. Like, you're trying to pull it out of the boot.)
Do that a few times, and then go somewhere with bigger angle. Don't be afraid, you gonna do 6. Just keep your toes up and your quads/knees will do all the work, it's like instinctive! (you gonna feel your quads fully pumped while going down, and your knees might get shaky).
You won't do 8 or 10 at all. The only time you gonna turn 180, is by accident, and you gonna lose your balance or force yourself to fall guaranteed xD
Its another thing to do 6 (because its pretty much how you go down a steep hill with your shoes) , and another to do 8.
Atleast that was my experience (i spent 4 hours up there and 2 was "dead time" xD). But yeah, it was really fun and the learning curve is nice!
My next goal is to do 8 and especially 10. It's all about practice! The more time you spend, the better you'll get.

Awesome work Kevin ! I have been teaching snowboard for 9 years and I really appreciate your video. Quite often simple instructions like "look and point the direction you want to go" work better than more complex instructions. Words are such a poor tool for explaining action. I hope that all of my first time students watch your video before I get to teach them.

I have skated for 3 years now, and today was my first day snowboarding. A lot like skating except you are not able to move your feet around when riding. My tailbone is all bruised up from falling haha. You'll love it, I had so much fun.

    • @wrinkle66
      @wrinkle66 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yes. I used to skate pools, ramps, parks and free-style back in the 80's and when I first tried snowboarding 13 years ago it was just a natural progression. Your balance from skateboarding will help a lot. Of course your feet are strapped in and you might find it difficult pushing along with one foot locked at an awkward angle to the chairlift.

The best way to learn just go out and go straight downhill. You will fall so so so many times. But days after that you will get the feeling of the action. You will master it very fast. Just be confident and stop spending your time on youtube, go out.

    I have trained for and played 12 years of organized Baseball, 4 years of Football and 4 years of basketball...too many years to count of inline skating, skate boarding and mountain biking as well as hiking 14ers in Colorado. With all that being said, I go to the gym regularly to work cardio, general fitness and flexibility. There is not 1 thing I have done in my life that equates or translates any skills necessary for snowboarding...if anything, the only thing that translates from any of them activities previous mentioned helped me with in snowboarding was how to take hard falls like a champ, pick yourself up, and try again!! I watched your videos ( which are super informative ) as well as others to help with the theory aspect of boarding, theory with visual reference is just one part of the battle, putting things into practice is a whole different beast and each individual will pick up on and progress putting all techniqe into practice at different rates. From my own experience, no matter how many questions you have answered, no matter how many videos you have watched, no matter how athletic / flexible / proficient with balance you are, no matter what sports or activities you have done in your life...while athleticism, flexibility and theory may give you a slight edge over someone out of shape and lacks knowledge, snowboarding is it's own beast entirely!! No matter how much you try to be ahead of the curve through theory before the 1st time you hit the slopes for Day 1 of snowboarding, I would highly suggest getting Elbow Pads, Knee Pads, Crash Pants and Wrist Guards to help prevent any nagging injuries that will stunt your developement as you should be prepared to fall alot...getting lessons from a Ski and Board Instructor at a Resort is also highly recommended unless you have really good friends with a lot of patience and persistance that knows how to show you "proper technique" step by step as well as explaining all the little nueances of stance, balance, weight shifting, and board manipulation with your feet etc., and who is also not afraid to point out your flaws in the form of constructive criticisim in an attempt to help get you better at boarding. Great videos, keep up the good work...hope to see you on the slopes one day to thank you in person!! ;-}

One suggestion about the roll over. Me personally and the people i've taught boarding find the roll over much easier if you just bend one knee and extend the other leg, while on the ground, and then simply roll in the direction of the extended leg. For me and my students it worked wonders! :D
BTW, loving your channel, it's very helpful even for more experienced riders cause of the tips on improving the riding style. Keep up with the good work.
