    y'know, I just had a really random idea: imagine if this game had a dedicated arcade cabinet, dk bongos and all. it would randomize which kingdom you go to in a pool of the first four kingdoms, each with three levels, and every rank you get gives you a ton of tickets, and you can either dip out with the amount of tickets you get from beating one kingdom or continue to keep on playing through another kingdom, randomized between the next four kingdoms in this game (preferably it goes in the order of the Gamecube version). it keeps on going until you get to the final boss, which gives you a massive amount of tickets. basically, high time consumption, massive ticket boon if you go for long enough.

    For a series that only has five main entries and lots of spinoffs, you’ve been getting very creative with the game variety for this month!
    I loved Jungle Beat as a kid, and still have the original! This has gotta be the most hardcore and insane game in his lineup, and I’m all for it!

    Really controvertial take: Jungle beat is probably my favorite DK game for how weird it is, both in terms of design and gameplay (it's like what "Wario World" is to the wario series or something)
    Wasn't expecting a video on Monkey Fest of all things xD
    It is a good level even tho it's not one of my faves from it (Aerie Fortress being the one that one game level that I really adore). Still, I really like it. Great work as always :DD

    Yes, I was hoping you'd have a video about Jungle Beat, easily one of my favorite DK games! It just feels so good to play, I don't know how they made the game's mechanics feel so good when you basically just have 2 movement buttons like that, but they did. And the score attack system? Just adds SO much replayability, I still play this game from time to time, years later.
    If you like Jungle Beat, you should absolutely check out DK: King of Swing on the GBA! It's another super under-rated DK game from this era.

    I think the best level in the game is definitely Cloudy Heights, the first level of the chili pepper kingdom, it’s the ultimate test of the games combo system in that you can go through the entire level with a massive combo, getting more than double for the platinum crest, it’s so satisfying to pull off and infuriating to get hit at least once and start your run over again (Thank goodness it’s the first level so restarting isn’t much of an issue.) and compared to the silly races the other final kingdoms put DK through, this feels like a worthy final challenge putting your knowledge as a Jungle Beat Combo master to the fullest test… too bad the end boss of this kindgom is a fight with the elephant robots where they lazily add another for “variety”.

    Jungle Beat is one of my favorite DK spin offs. There's a part of me that wishes some elements and characters of it would come back again in the mainline series. I also have to wonder how things might have turned out if Jungle Beat came out before the Donkey Konga games. First impressions matter and this game being wedged in between what is essentially Taiko no Tatsujin "featuring Donkey Kong" I think made people not give it a fair enough look. The lack of DKC fan favorite characters might be jarring to some people, but if you can get past that and look at this game for what it is, you're in for a great time with this one, especially after you get the hang of the combos and Clap Grabs.

    Let's go Jungle Beat content!
    Was hoping to see a video on this appear during DK December, and this delivers.
    Monkeyfest is such a fun level, seeing it get the love it deserves is great.
    Funnily enough, Jungle Beat is the first game I ever played. It is an excellent game, and I always loved how over the top the game is. DK beating the shit out of everything is excellent and just a ton of fun.
    Honestly, I am kinda sad that no platformer quite like it has been made since.
    Also, did not know that thing is called cob cock. That is bizarre.

    Jungle Beat is great. It is the perfect game to casually play on a short notice, since it is relatively short and being skilled in it is so satisfying. Plus, thanks to the bongos beating up enemies feels visceral and shows what a badass Donkey Kong truly is.

  • @SniperJade71
    @SniperJade71 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This game is massively underappreciated. Played through it so many times when I was 10. The rhythmic combo system was so choice, and the aesthetics are gorgeous. (Yes, playing with the bongo controls is the best way.) And DK is so BADASS here.
    The only thing that confused me as a kid was a lack of story explanation. In the Gamecube version's manual, it simply said something like "DK's gonna beat the kings and become the strongest." Barely any other context for the insanity I was witnessing. (Search up the pdf, that's literally all there is, which is jarring compared to DKC 1 to 3's manuals). More of an explanation was given in the wii port's manual I guess
    Given how simple and timeless the game is, maybe it didn't need all that. But a bit more context would have been nice lol.

    The system used for defeating the kong bosses is interesting in and of itself. A semi-punch-out clone with dodges, counters and weak point states, as well as being able to beat the kongs to the punch with some attacks for extra damage (and the 50-damage lightning uppercut on ninja kong if you're wise to the timing), definitely makes one feel good to learn and beat. It makes me sad that sumo kong is the most linear in fighting style despite being the last kong boss fought, but all the more WHY HAVEN'T YOU DONE MORE WITH THIS CONCEPT when it comes to cactus/ghastly king, whose fight mixes both the platforming elements with the punch-out elements, with multiple ways to down him and cause damage. Get close to his feet after avoiding his sweep to attack with your own so you can pummel him as he's sent into the air; attack his chest to instigate a smaller game similar to the previous kongs where you have to dodge his swipe to get hits in; bash his head with a double-fisted sledgehammer to instantly down him to the ground, and two moves that send him reeling to the other side of the arena for an instant down, opening him up for further punishment...it's a god-tier fight that deserves more recognition and is DEFINITELY what I'd want a Jungle Beat 2 to capitalize on. It shows that no matter how big a boss is, DK will find a way to bring them down, and in many creative ways at that. But more than that, it's fun to wail on him in those multiple ways, and I found myself wanting to fight him more to see what new ways I could open him up for damage. Most people would opt for the instant down moves for a quick kill, and it's super easy to do as he gets up and isn't attacking with how easy it is to maneuver in the air, but I like - I want - this kind of creativity in a platforming boss fight. But I'd just like some more giant bosses to punch like him more than anything.

    ...It's interesting how for the longest time this game was viewed as basically to DK what Sticker Star is to the Mario RPGs, in that it was viewed as an aggressive attempt to "gentrify" the brand by ditching the interesting bits made by other people. I'll admit, I was in that camp back in the day.
    But, folks seem to have softened on it given how, long-term, it didn't really have the negative effects that Sticker Star (Or really, the New Super Mario Bros series and the Mario Mandates in general, but that's its own topic) had on its broader series, and how it's interesting in its own right.
    It'd be fun if they did a spiritual successor to this in the DKC-universe, maybe using that to also bring in Jungle Beat-exclusive elements into that "canon" too...

    • @DesigningFor
      @DesigningFor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There was a really poorly translated interview right before Jungle Beat came out where Koizumi stated that old elements from the Donkey Kong Country games were "not fresh enough" for today's gamers and the only characters who could return were "DK and the banana". This created a VERY antagonistic relationship between DK fans and Nintendo for decades, until eventually Country content did come back and, decades later, the interview was re-translated to state something more similar to "our team does not feel comfortable using Rare's characters and we hope you enjoy our own take on DK".
      Which means there was a lot of antagonism because someone at IGN was bad at translation!

    I disagree on the opinion of the Wii version... The idea of "move using Bongos" still sounds incredibly awkward and annoying, but the combo system is still present in all its glory on Wii! Plus I think there's more levels?
    Point is, while they are notably different experiences, I'd still opine that the video's praises are just as applicable to Wii as Gamecube! Including, sadly, the "hard to find" part, given how old and relatively obscure it is.

    • @DesigningFor
      @DesigningFor  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just don't like the directional clapping REALLY am not a fan of the hit points implemented. I feel like it really de-emphasizes the more point-to-point nature of Jungle Beat and brings it closer in line with a traditional platformer, while all the things I like about Jungle Beat are how it breaks platformer conventions with its rhythmic identity! It's still alright, but I'd always prefer the original version!

    • @ShadwSonic
      @ShadwSonic 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DesigningFor For casual play that makes sense, but I am and always have been a completionist... Pretty much renders how hits work a non-issue (can't afford many knocks either way). And I'll gladly take directional clapping if that's the price for responsive movement.
