A wonderful performance from both Sutherland and Merrill. I love Joan's voice. It speaks to my heart, just like Kathleen Ferrier's.
La Stupenda...Sung with such ravishing ease and beauty. The tonal beauty is quite often quite magical.
Joan may not have been the complete artist that Maria was but in her prime there was no other soprano before or since with such a thrilling voice, a singer for whom the most difficult coloratura demands held no terrors - absolutely unique! Paired with the glorious baritone of Robert Merrill you have singing of unsurpassed brilliance, possibly in all history.
Disagree that Callas was a complete artist . If that was the case then she would have a voice like Sutherland, which she did not have.
I’ve never been the greatest admirer of John Pritchard from what I heard in live performances, however in this recording he is outstanding. Blows Richard Bonynge’s performance from the 1971 recording into the weeds.
I think in the final cabaletta Bonynge's conducting blows Pritchard's into the water.
