The last time a US trade deal was considered between UK and USA officials, they wanted control over NHS purchasing ( 4 times+ as much on drugs ) and control over UK food supplies standards and labelling with all their bad stuff coming in as commodity produce. Huge carbon footprint.
Any deal with Trump will certainly mean the UK giving away too much. Trump will want his tentacles in the NHS and other public and private services. There is no way a sensible deal could be reached.
Believe me there is a special relationship. But only one side needs to cling on to it and it's us. On the defence front the UK is effectively subservient to the US. The UK effectively ceeds access to all soveriegn territory to the US in exchange for access to various capabilites. We provide global reach (territory) and they provide capability. In Trump's eyes that won't be enough and in fairness I can see his point of view. This should have been addressed over the last 15 years but hasn't been. The UK and the US have built incredibly strong relationships over the years and I don't see that going anywhere, but I can see us paying more to maintain it. And we're gonna have to because previous governments haven't got out in front of this very obviously emerging issue. Yet more Tory short-sightedness.
I think the biggest point from PMQs was the repeated military spending question. Starmer didnt even point out that it was in the budget only a week ago until she had dug deeper to ask it a second time, and he threw in a real sucker punch turning her own accusations of student politics back at her and with the facts to back it up. I didnt listen to the budget intently but even I could recall as she was asking the question that the 2% increase in military spending was in there. That's just piss poor by any standards.
I think the Titan submersible is one of my favourite news stories because it happened while I was off grid with some friends mountaineering. When we got to a mud-house with internet we found that a small pod full of billionaires had imploded and Russia was experiencing a coup from people who wanted the government to be worse. It was crazy
Both sides are bloody awful ‘Look what they tweeted about Trump’ ‘Well look what she said about covid parties’. Maybe, ya know, talk about the water crisis, or housing crisis of global conflicts. We need PR to get these muppets out.
Not sure Politics Joe would enter to the same discord that now Trump is President elect that we the British government should now fawn over him. His own VP elect compared him to Hitler so comments are fine and like Macrons message we should treat him cordially but also stand up to him.
I’d just like to point out, when I had dinner at a rich guy’s house and he told me to have seconds, I kind of felt like he was judging me by my size, not telling me he liked me… idk tho, I’m a rotund fella lol
10:20 THE ACTUAL QUOTE PRESIDENT TRUMP: "Well, what went wrong was a rigged election and what went wrong is a candidate that shouldn’t be there and a man that has no concept of what he’s doing. I went in yesterday and there was a television screen, and I said, “This is genius.” Putin declares a big portion of the Ukraine - of Ukraine. Putin declares it as independent. Oh, that’s wonderful. (sarcastic) So, Putin is now saying, “It’s independent,” a large section of Ukraine. I said, “How smart is that?” And he’s gonna go in and be a peacekeeper. That’s strongest peace force… We could use that on our southern border. That’s the strongest peace force I’ve ever seen. There were more army tanks than I’ve ever seen. They’re gonna keep peace all right. No, but think of it. Here’s a guy who’s very savvy… I know him very well. Very, very well. By the way, this never would have happened with us. Had I been in office, not even thinkable. This would never have happened. But here’s a guy that says, you know, “I’m gonna declare a big portion of Ukraine independent,” he used the word “independent,” “and we’re gonna go out and we’re gonna go in and we’re gonna help keep peace.” You gotta say that’s pretty savvy. And you know what the response was from Biden? There was no response. They didn’t have one for that. No, it’s very sad. Very sad." Hardly praising him, just saying it's a savvy move to disguise his intentions as peace-keeping and something good.. Sometimes the way he talks is incredibly irritating.. however, what I hate even more is being a dishonest liar.
@recreationalelmersglue6053 Musk has openly helped Ukraine.. so I'm not sure what you're alluding to to be honest. I know the idea that Trump, Musk and Putin are sat in their respective towers twiddling their moustaches is literally a childlike analysis of what's going on behind closed doors.
On the topic is aid to Ukraine I think most people under estimate how much aid is going to Ukraine from countries which are not the US. I just did a web search (duckduckgo) and I found a CNN article from the 20th March 2024, where the US gives 41% of military assistance with 43% coming from the EU and 15% from other countries. OK 41% is a massive amount of aid, but when you listen to the commentary people make it sound like the US is giving almost all the aid to Ukraine, and that is not true it is not most of the military aid. Things will definitely have to change with the types of equipment, because most of the aid was in the form of not sending cash but sending military equipment. Also all of the US equipment that has already been sent will still need to be maintained. So there will be a massive problem with those F16 fighters that Ukraine has just gotten their hands on, without maintenance support from the US old airplanes can soon become useless. So Europe will need to send Ukraine old Eurofighters, because the US doesn't have anything to do with the maintenance of the Eurofighter. But anyway you look at it when Ukraine has a 41% cut in military aid, that will be a massive problem.
Yes, scale is good to remember - the US has an annual defense budget of $800 billion, with 800 military installations globally. US defense contractors are happy to supply new munitions to the military, to replace the aging ones bound for Ukraine. Also, Putin was not among Trump's congratulatory callers, according to his spokesman, because the US is an opponent. American altruism might be overstated.
I think those points you listed make the problem far greater than just the raw "41% cut in spending" that it's percieved as. Losing access to the US Militaries equipment and the ability to maintain the equipment Ukraine already has makes it a far greater cost in the short-term. Plus I'd imagine that the time it would take for Ukraine to recoup that 41% deficit from the rest of NATO would leave them in enough of a weak spot for long enough to allow Russia to force Ukraine to negotiate an unfavourable peace treaty.

Its a disaster
It's never happening. Tories would be screaming bloody murder about any concessions lol

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. Thankfully for us Badenoch isn't/wasn't trade minister, she would've accepted that deal!
Still day 71 of asking for a production team microphone.
Imagine not commenting on Badenoch's colossal defence spending blunder
Why has Sean come to work dressed as Ed ?

Same old torys not being constructive at all. Siding with a fantasist is tory bread and butter is it not?

Love the pogsjoe podcast
Thinking Kemi is a more challenging PMQs opponent for Starmer compared to Sunak is a bad take
