      The reasoning behind these kinds of changes is that MINI can't stay with a certain audience, it isn't enough to keep an entire brand afloat. Changing the design can keep the brand afloat. MINIs will always be fun and customizable, and that's what we can appreciate. Not a lot of vehicles are as unique as MINIs.

    If these new minis could be aware of how badly these hack designers messed up it’s interior, it would drive off the nearest cliff. Immediately. I will stick with my 2003 mini Cooper s, because it’s great all the way around and is a blast to drive. Frank Stephenson knew how to put a design together.

    Minuses for me:
    - Iconic front windscreen have been altered. It was common with all generations like 30-35 degrees from vertical.
    - deleted wheel arches = bean counting
    - rear lights are nice but somewhat not Mini
    - deleted physical climate controls
    - cloth covering the dash will collect dust after some time
    - deleted instrument gages: it was fun to watch e-power dial going to 100% right in front of yours eyes and I dont want turn my eyes to the middle of the dash just to follow essentials like speed, charge level etc (although that’s more in line with original Mini)
    - Not UK built anymore
    Pluses:
    + Range
    + Central round screen looks fresher
    + and nothing else 😅
    Hopes
    > I hope they retained the driving characteristics
    > hope that annoying infotainment system and switching the car on/off got better

    I don't understand why MINI, having a concept as perfect as the F56, is launching this new concept. It's so ugly that I don't think it will last long, no matter how much love there is among MINI fans. I have to be honest! The vehicle looks very, very ugly! Very disappointing on MINI's part. They could have opted for a new design inspired by the classic model from the 60s or improved the design of the F56 a little more, instead of letting the MINI Cooper dies like this.

  • @insidethecourt
    @insidethecourt 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    The aggressive stance of the MINI is what makes it iconic. While I like some of the renewable design elements and the interior dashboard and OLED, the Cooper exterior looks more generic and less MINI. Hopefully they go in the opposite direction with the JCW.

    Got one of the last Coopers built with a manual transmission last year, for me, it's a must, I love MINI, but I also like driving, and with an automatic transmission you are NOT fkg driving, so I will have to keep this one for a while, and if a day comes were you cannot get manual cars anymore, I'll start using public transport or taxis...

    • @mrsoisauce9017
      @mrsoisauce9017 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      So if you can’t have everything, you’ll have nothing? Dude, come on. These are EVs. Did you really expect a manual? They’ll probably offer them on the ICE versions made by JCW. Also, even in an automatic, I’d rather have that and still be able to enjoy driving than have nothing at all. You can’t be that damn stubborn. From one car enthusiast to another, be glad they’re at least trying

      @NeonNightTraveler 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I also love manual transmissions and it's actually the thing that I miss the most in my F56 SE (especially on twisty mountain roads) but then again it doesn't make sense in an EV (simulated manual transmissions might be nice though) and I love the immediate acceleration, especially in cities (ICEs don't really have much chance once traffic lights turn green since no one uses launch control and few rev it out - I even got a BMW M5 driver once that realized/floored it too late; it's silly but kinda fun and I gotta enjoy it as long as there are few EVs around :D).

    My opinion of the new MINI Cooper SE (J01):
    The design is controversial and less aggressive/sporty but I'm starting to kinda like it. I'll likely miss the F56's design (interior with all of the buttons and more sporty exterior) but the new design will hopefully improve the drag coefficient quite a bit (although the overall shape probably makes it difficult to achieve a really good result). The JCW trim looks decent and the real JCW model should apparently look a bit more aggressive. The interior is kinda boring but also simple and clean. It makes sense in regard of classic MINIs and a go-kart doesn't have much buttons (etc.) either (so the simple design is kinda driver-focused).
    My main issue is with the weight: With 1680 kg (EU kerb weight, i.e. incl. 75kg for the driver and luggage) it's likely a bit too heavy for really good driving dynamics (modern technology can do wonders but it's still noticeable when pushing the limits). The F56 MINI Cooper SE weights 120 kg more than the ICE JCW (and I find my F56 MINI Cooper SE already too heavy) but the new J01 unfortunately adds another 240 kg on top (I get that batteries are heavy but battery technology has advanced a bit in the meantime and it could probably be quite a bit lighter than it is).
    The other stats are obviously better :) Compared to the current F56 SE, the new J01 SE has 25 kW more (engine) power (+18.5%), is +20km/h faster (+13.3%), takes 0.6 seconds less from 0 to 100 km/h (-8.2%; I expected a bigger improvement here but the weight probably explains it), and offers around 157 km (the WLTP range is not final yet so I based this on 390 km) more range (+67.4% -> definitely a nice and very noticeable improvement).
    The good thing is that it's apparently even more fun to drive (there are already at least two videos online). It finally oversteers instead of the heavy understeering that limits the current F56 (although it feels neural to me when staying at the limit - but it definitely understeers when pushing it more). I do wonder though if it where better if it would be neutral / well balanced instead of oversteering (oversteering is fun but one cannot drift a FWD car anyway so a neutral balance might be better/faster).
    I'll surely miss the instrument cluster but then again I never really looked much at it as the speedo in the HUD is good enough. The analogue looking instrument cluster was nevertheless cool though. I wish the new J01 would offer a proper HUD that projects directly onto the windscreen but I've been told that the angle makes it difficult and that there are options but they're a bit too expensive for a MINI (but there might be hope for facelifts).
    The new OLED screen is nice though and felt intuitive to use (on the prototype it was still a bit buggy but that can likely be fixed in time and it's nice that there'll be OTA updates).
    And last but not least: It's a bit unfortunate that the Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) will now be mandatory for all cars sold in the EU. It must be disabled every time one starts the engine and I had to press a physical button and one or two times on the touchscreen to disable it (IIRC the second touch was required to get rid of the legal notice). The ISA will otherwise trigger an acoustic alert when going over the speed limit (which could probably get annoying - especially if it triggers right away if one's even just 1 km/h too fast but maybe the sensitivity can be adjusted a little bit).
    Edit: I forgot another really important advantage of the J01: Finally a proper BMS (battery management system)! It's so annoying that the F56 always charges to 100% as that isn't ideal for lithium-ion battery life (I'm mad that BMW/MINI can't or don't want to implement this for the F56)! The new J01 finally makes it possible to set a charging limit / target SoC (defaulting to 80% to maximise battery life) :) The current F56 is also a bit less fun in winter as it cannot directly heat the battery (AFAIK the preconditioning feature only heats the battery indirectly and very slowly by heating the cabin - I'll run some tests during next winter but there are videos that show that this is the case for the BMW i3). The lack of battery heating can result in slightly limited engine performance (~70-80%) if the battery cooled down to ~0°C (or below). The current F56 can also overheat when really pushing it (in that case the engine power will get severely limited - IIRC to around 25-40%). The new J01 hopefully fixes both of these issues by significantly improving the heating and cooling capabilities.
