Legendary and proven reliability and durability. Available front/rear lockers, solid front/rear axles, great approach/break-over/departure angle, minimum ground clearance of nearly 11 inches. Of course it’s the best! The 80-series was used as a benchmark when Toyota developed the new 300-series. Only the GR Sport 300-series Land Cruiser comes close to the 80-series capabilities.
Yep, GR Sport 300-series Land Cruiser comes close to the 80 despite having IFS front. In addition to F&R lockers you get KDSS, crawl control, multi-terrain, a beast of a vehicle. Too bad it's not sold here in the US.

My 1994 land cruiser have more than 880000 km in the odometer.
It has a carbed 1FZF engine with manual transmission.
The car is legendary. The best car in history when it comes to reliability and efficiency. The only problem with the car is drinking. The car is a gas hog.
I love the old guy very much. I’m not selling him because he’s family.

As an 80 series owner, I push mine to as many limits as I can. I have 263,000 miles on mine and she has never skipped a beat. The only issue I’ve ever had was that it used to over heat from time to time, but it turns out I just had a leaking radiator. It has since been fixed and no other issues have arisen. Greatest car I’ve ever owned and I’m proud to just say I have one.
162,000 miles (260,000km) on my LandCruiser. 1995, and the best part of it is what the USA didn't get. The "multivalve" 1HD-FT engine.
For the uninitiated, a 4.2lt straight 6cyl turbo diesel. Direct injection but all mechanical, it'll run with no alternator. Gets about 18mpg on average.
H151 5 speed manual.
I've added bullbar, brush bars, rock sliders, a 12,000lb winch with synthetic rope.
A 2" lift with King springs and Bilstein shocks and ARB front and rear air lockers.

You forgot to mention that the engine is 24 valves. My 95 Land cruiser 80 series has 474,597 km, I drive it everyday for work.
The 1fz vs diesel are just as economical if you compare servicing costs replacement parts and components for the engine. And diesel is more expensive than petrol in Australia too, not to mention the initial cost of the vehicle?
Anyway, the 80 is a great off road truck in all it's variants, wouldn't you agree?
You have a very capable and fine looking rig there, your investment has certainly paid off! I love it!
Back in the late 90's, I brought both my new born baby girls home from the hospital for the very first time.
Since then I have built the 1fz 80 into a serious off road rig and I love it like a family member to this day.
Here's to the 80, one of the best off road trucks ever built by Toyota!
It's a shame US market never got the HDJ80, best all rounder, great on the trail and still good on highways
the 1fz isn't bad though, especially since it can handle boost on stock internals

1fz vs hdj? It seems both have their pros and cons. For sure the 1fz is a little thirsty, but I must point out that the hdj loves fuel too, however servicing is more economical with the petrol and if something goes wrong, parts are cheap and readily available for the 1fz.
Also it seems the diesel trucks are a little overpriced, especially enginge parts and components.
But anyway you cut it, the 80 series is a beast on road and off!
Love my 1990 1-HDT powered HDJ81. Imported in 2021.
Nice! Older stuff is just better and easy to work on. My rigs are a 79 F150 and a 98 XJ. Both straight 6 4x4s!

I'm lucky as I've ended up with an 80 and a 100. The 100 is my daily and the 80 is converted to my trip truck. It's a 97 so has the later engine, but still no race car. However, I just got back from a 7500 mile trip this summer and it didn't skip a beat. Did some pretty decent trails down to campsites that only the locals knew about, and I wouldn't have wanted to be in the hundo. Not because it couldn't do it, because I don't mind the pinstripes on the 80. Oh, and the gas mileage, we did out trip right as gas peaked, and I spent about $2200 in gas for the trip. I tell myself it's a wash since I slept in the rig every night but one. But yeah, they drink mucho gasoline.

I splurged when I was in my early 20s and bought a 97 model back in 1999 or 2000 and loved it (back when my car sales career first started taking off and started making killer money) . my only problem with it was I am 6ft. 4in and I never had adequate legroom and the gearshift dug into my knee so uncomfortable on long trips. Had the inline 6cly. it was a beast and would go anywhere. I wouldn't mind buying another one but not for a everyday driver to add to my collection. Just want one all stock that has been taken care off and not ran thru the mud which is hard to find.
I have a 1994 80 Series Arizona Truck. (NEVER SEEN AN OFF-ROAD TRAIL) My Dad bought it and it literally was used for a vacation truck back and forth to San Diego & Soccer Games. That’s it. I have it now, and just had the entire engine tuned and all fluids redone and serviced.
1FZ-FE is the newer motor. 4.5lt fuel injection, plenty of power.
People tend to forget it's a heavy offroad vehicle shaped like a brick not a performance rig

I have two of them and no it’s not enough power once you add gear and protection. LS swap in the future

The 80 is my favorite. I like the flared fenders and off road ability. In 94 we had one on the lot I worked at in Massachusetts for $55k. I asked my boss who was going to buy it as we weren't in a wealthy area. It was sold within a week to a dealership in Dallas. They were that hard to find.
However, considering the resale, I would buy the LR3/LR4 in the background of this video for off roading and beating it up.
Love stories like this about these when they were new.
I would never do a rover for off-road. It’s cheap barrier to entry and it’ll make it up the mountain but will it get you back home? That’s a question you never have to ask in a Toyota

True story, myth debunked. Rovers have been trusted for decades in the most challenging environments. LR3's are pretty good as long as they're maintained.
Lmao you do realize that’s because they crammed 21 people into a 1st gen with stock tires into a sand pit with no spares or recovery gear right? Over do your payload on old street tires in the middle of the Sahara is top tier stupid. It’s not because the car broke down it’s because they got stuck with a flat
@@shiftmotorsports9803 - well said. It’s dangerous when an opinion about reliability becomes so stellar it’s somewhat mythical. I had a Tundra prove the myth wrong and when I speak of it stranding me twice on a mountainside TWICE due to mechanical failure, I get accused of making it up, not telling the truth from people that try to live that myth. I bought that as a dream truck after owning a F150 5.0 for 4 years of trouble free off-road use. I have has no issues with about 100 F150s through my 2 businesses and personal use and have had no mechanical issues except one power window. At the same time I don’t call the reliability mythical as I have a couple of friends that had absolute lemons that were very similar to my work trucks. None of them are perfect, the Toyotas ARE more reliable than many others, but are not so reliable that you don’t plan on them breaking down.

As a fellow 3FE 80 owner; double check that that alternator fits your rig. I believe only 90 amp alternators with the internal fans are now available, and some modifications are necessary to fit them.
I just replaced what looks like the OEM alternator with the 90-amp version from toyota dealer with the internal fan and everything plugged in the same with no mods. Can't be 100% sure the one that failed was OEM, but it sure looked old.
@@speasley1 oh that’s good to hear! Not sure what market your 80 is from, but for my California spec. I would have needed to grind down the mounts on the engine to fit the 90amp version. IIRC some American markets got 80s with a “cold weather package” or something that had the 90 amp internal fan.
Glad to hear yours fit! I am doing a radiator right now, and trying to get the fittings on the bottom of the radiator for the transmission cooler. :/ gotta keep these babies on the road 😎

Had a ‘97 for a few years. It was cool, but still slow and terrible gas mileage. My only off-road excursions were on dirt fire roads, so nothing too challenging. It didn’t make a ton of sense as a daily.
In my opinion the 100 series is the best.
That's my dream in fact.

The 1fzfe is 212 hp and 275 lb torque. The 3fe in this video is 155hp and 220 lb torque so im not sure why he said it has more torque and is better offroad than the 93-97 80 series? I still like the engine tho and would own one but it cant compare to my 97, just different.
I bought mines looking for a snow duty rig as I was an essential worker (even before pandemic lol) the more I toyed with it the more it grew on me. Not knowing 6 years ago how sought out they are. Scored well and got rear and front lockers, started off fixing old leaks and hoses then accessories. Trans starting to jump from 1st to 2nd but at 310,000 miles its stil a solid rig.
I have over 500,000 on mine and I honestly feel like it is just now broke in. It is a pleasure, an adventure and a privilege to own an 80 series.

I have a 1995 Ford F250 4X4 that is one extremely tough truck. I have two third generation 4Runner 4X4's that are exceptional, rugged, reliable and fun. I have a 1996 Lexus LX450 and she is the QUEEN. It is a legendary classic. There is something that can be said for triple lock. I don't know why xxx isn't standard on all 4X4's.

I've been daily driving my 92 80 series for over 15 years. Salt is eating it.Thats about it. I don't care. Just turned 200 K miles last month. Purrs like a tank.
Nice 80, too bad it is missing the magic dial on the left side of the dash... My LX450 just turned 250k and I love it. Poured many dollars in parts into it though over the past 10 years. My biggest gripe is the engine. It would be fine if it retained the same shitty MPG but had a lot of power, or same shitty power but was way more efficient. But no.

Now that the last of proper Land Cruisers here in the USA. Too bad we don't have LC105. Wish Toyota USA decide to bring LC70 with 4.5TD for those who want to upgrade from offroading FJ/4Runner. LC100/200 - not interested.

Does the FJ80 really have more torque that the FZJ80? I owned a '92 and now drive a triple locked '97, apart from the faster speed on pavement, I don't feel any difference on the trail, in terms of torque. So, that's interesting to know.

They did make a 105 series, which was the 100 with a solid front axle. But I think you would have to import that one. They have them in Australia and Africa. It's kind of the best of both worlds.

They are hella slow and inefficient; put some 37s and you're slow cookin for sure. Thinking about making a custom sticker for my rear windshield that says, "I'm VERY slow, please be patient," for my 80 lol

Buy a Rover please so the prices on these Gems drop for the rest of us. The FZJ80 saved my uncles life in Cambodia, it drove over a land mine and the frame absorbed most of the impact. This is why the UN trusts these vehicles.

@@brettsuydam7457 I've seen Toyotas live their whole life in AZ... And the frames still rot out within a decade. It's really sad because their designs are bar-none minus that
80 series land cruisers don't rust easily. Some of the other Toyota models rust somewhat quickly. However I would say Nissan, Subaru, and Isuzu typically rust just as bad or worse.

It's probably worth about 15k. It will only gain value as it ages if taken care of.

This is a nice rig, but 9 mpg on the highway?? People keep justifying Toyota fuel mileage in vehicles such as this, and the 5.7 trucks and SUVs. It’s NOT acceptable, definitely is not a good thing and kills one of the requirements if a great Overlander and that is range! In the interest of mythical claims of reliability they are willing to overlook a glaringly serious failure. I agree they are likely the most reliable out there, but they are not infallible. I learned that the hard way, TWICE, in a 2014 Tundra TRD Off-road double cab I had, left me in a mountainside twice, which was more than inconvenient because we were trying to outrun a serious storm the second time. I just left it there hoping it would get caught up in an avalanche!! 😂😂. No such luck!! Bought it as a dream truck,,,, had the dream for years, but I sold it 2 years later as a turd. It stranded me twice in the city as well. The truck was babied as it was my personal truck, dream truck at one time, not one of my many work trucks.
I still don’t mind the Tacoma, but if it has the 5.7, or any of the fuel guzzling 6 cylinders (except the diesels) I don’t want it. They still can, and do, break down, not unlike anything else on the road. The extra $$$ you shell out up front can be put into proper maintenance of almost, not quite, but almost any other brand and get solid reliability as well. The difference in reliability, especially nowadays, doesn’t entirely justify the costs up front as well as the long term costs of ownership.
Just do a little research before discounting other models of other brands vs the same competitor from Toyota. It’s not always the best choice.
Mileage and range aside, the Land Cruiser is a beautiful vehicle with some extremely high capabilities off-road. They are definitely reliable as well, just not the only reliable brand.
9mpg is because it's 30 some odd years old and he doesn't know how to tune the engine. It's older technology and you need to know it to tune it up right.
@@moabman6803 - 9 mpg because it’s a modified brick in the wind. Heavy all that stuff on the roof, the very aggressive off-road tires…. It’s not just tuning. These things got 15- 16 mpg highway bone stock. 9 mpg is pretty close to the limit. He may also be including some city driving & off road driving. Both of those kill fuel economy as well. Just tuning, isn’t going to make much if any difference. For all you know, he may have it tuned perfectly and that’s it. 9 mpg is not far out of the ballpark as I said.

I almost have a 100 series (v8 4Runner) I would not trade v8 engine for 80 series.
its super cheap to turbo the 1fz and you can get 300+hp immediately, you can do headstuds and push 400+hp on unopened stock internals, the 1fz is essentially a larger 2jz
