How to Request and Style a Flat Top Haircut (Men's Haircut)

What's up guys welcome back to the channel today I'm going to walk you through my most recent men's haircut the flat top. I do want to give a big thank you to @fade_station for allowing me to come in and film this cut they're located here in Albuquerque and if you'd like to check out some of their work you can find them on Instagram or Facebook.

Now to start with you'll see my barber wants to establish the general shape that he'll be operating within as he progresses through this men's haircut. So to start off he's going to use the top of my head as the lowest point of the cut. This will help him avoid overcutting as he continues to shape the style.
Once he's done so he's going to start removing a majority of the bulk which will help show that uniform flat top haircut style we're all used to seeing.
Next, it's time to address the sides and I have to say I thought long and hard about what I wanted to do with the sides. Since I've already shown what my sides look like with a high and tight fade...

I wanted to try bringing the fade down a bit to add some dimension to the hairstyle. So I requested a 1.5 on the sides and a zero right around the neckline and around the ears. The only place you'll see the razor being used this time is the lower part of the back of my neck.
It's really personal preference when it comes to the sides of this particular haircut. think about your face shape because this is another men's haircut that can add a lot of structure to a rounder face which it what you want to try and achieve if you do have a round face shape.

I really like that you‘re experimenting so much with your hairstyles. Most „Style TH-camrs“ tend to stay in their lane and don‘t really try anything to extrem.
revilO16 thanks man I appreciate that I was hesitant at first when I started doing haircuts that were so different than what I would traditionally rely on but the more I do it the less I worry about how different it is it’s fun experimenting with different styles and it makes it easier to push out of your comfort zones in a number of different ways. Im a barber and i do quite a few flatops every week. They are all done skin on the sides its usually done on law enforcement and military personel. The cut looks really good on you.

Great cut there, Kel. I like how you ended up with a couple of options there at the end. When I get a flattop, my barber rounds the edges/corners so it's not as boxy, giving the flat a softer look--much like the second look you have after applying the product. Word of advice to all: shop around for barbers. Find a barber who really gets to know you and cuts to your lifestyle and vibe. Most barbers give good haircuts but they all have different nuances of cutting which can be so subtle, you might not notice. The first flat I ever got was from a barber who was good at cutting them but he didn't know me, nor I him. The flat was good but just wasn't me. Flash forward to my current barber who gives great flats and knows me. He nails the right look every time on me. The quickest way for a barber to get to know you is to find one you enjoy talking to.

@@KTKrup That being said, looks like you'll have to do a horseshoe high n tight flat based on the response given. It's pretty intense cut, it'll give you a BAMF attitude. I've gotten one myself in heat of summers and when I feel the need to lift more weights. But, your barber might not know how to do one. Usually a barber will let you know their comfort level giving one of those. It takes some searching out, calling around, asking strangers--who have have a 'shoe--who cut theirs. If you're ever in NC, I can recommend a few barbers who have the skill.
I really think the flat top looked great, I'd suggest trying it again or maybe go with more of a brush cut on top. You have a really talented barber.

Good job... LOVE my Flat top fade haircut. I'm Black, so luckily my hair stands up pretty hard without the need to blow dry, hair spray, etc. This Barber was really good! My Barber on Corona hiatus, so I needed some amo to guide my new Barber. Thanks

@@motivationpresentions The proper terminology... Used to just tell my old barber, female in-law in my Grandad's old shop, "Nice and flat on the top, close around the sides..." When I found the new barber, I told him "Flat top fade"

Flat top is underrated lol I recently switched from a Combover to a flap top cuz I wanted to get a flatop again like I used to in 4th or 5th grade and I think it looks better on me when it did when I was younger lol and it looks good on you as well 😊

I like flat top look, but it is hard to find anyone who can do it and they require more maintenance than I have time or patience for. I just get crew cuts but I do like the flat top better.

Get a zero Buzz cut. Or shorter than your haircut. It will probably suit you.

I think you should try horseshoe haircut.. It could be more interesting to watch and gonne be extreme change on your look..
I wouldn't mind seeing a closer flattop with a tight landing strip. Maybe even go to a horseshoe style flattop.

Fantastic haircut!! Where is this barbershop at? This barber was great! You should try a southside fade. That would look great on you. There are several videos on TH-cam on the southside fade.

I think if I had to choose I would say the flat top just because I had much more styling versatility than I thought I was going to it caught by surprise. It's also a very unique cut especially when everyone is doing longer tops with shorter sides so I really like how unique it feels in comparison to what's very popular right now.

Awesome flattop Kelvin! I wasn't sure it would work for you since your hair is kinda thin, but it looks amazing on you! Actually makes your hair look much thicker. I would suggest a bit shorter on top so you have a bit of a landing strip on top. Your barber nailed the haircut; level deck and perfect fade!! What is the barber's name? I'll have to give him a try next time I'm in Albuquerque! :)

That's a good looking cut. Unfortunately, even when communicated well, very few barbers know how to cut a proper flat top. I've brought in picture examples and always tell them I want my head to look like a Lego block and they still never get it right.

I personally felt like this fade had a bit of a smoother transition than the last one I had but if you just mean you like the style of the high and tight fade over this type of fade I get that. I think I could do this same style again in the future with a much tighter fade and I might like it better too. Thanks for coming by the channel again though btw!

Your sides look good, but I’d let the top grow to 2 or 3 inches. Then, use a pre-styler and post-styling products to get some lift.
