  • Part 2 of 2 review of the Sony ICF-SW7600GR LW/MW/FM shortwave radio. Part 1 was show #0291 which introduced the radio and its features. This show is an attempt to test the reception capability of this radio however shortwave band conditions are still not that good so keep that in mind.

I had a Sony ICF-SW7600GR in the western shadow of the Koolau Mountains on Oahu, Hawaii. I used a 100 foot heavy gauge long wire antenna. I was picking up commercial and government stations from all over the world, such as broadcasters in the high Andes and BBC’s Radio Africa. I picked up 100 watt SSB amateurs from Europe, Africa, and the Canary Islands. I listened to Beethoven’s Pastoral on earphones, magnificent clear quality. A good antenna makes the difference no matter what the receiver! NH7EM

+Mye Flatley Hi I have the ICF-SW7600GR, do I need the mono or stereo jack? thanks

Unfortunately, the ext antenna jack has +5 VDC on it. This prevents me from using my shielded loop coupled magnetic loop antenna since it is DC short. I wonder if that aversely effects your amplified loop or the radio itself. Maybe a series capacitor to block the DC?
It might be a good idea to make a right-angle dongle that plugs into the radio and connect the adapter to that for your external antenna. It will relieve any stress on the small jack in your radio(s).

Very good video! Quick question: is this a 3.5 mm jack PL259 adapter that you are using?

    Hey,
what do you think about the tecsun pl365 vs Sony 7600GR vs Tecsun pl600? I'm having a hard time deciding.
    Thank you.

Thanks for the review. I happen to have the Degen version of that loop active antenna and I tried connecting it to my Sony SW7600G and it didn't do well. This same antenna worked wll on the DE1103 and Realistic DX-440. I think the problem is that Sony wants you to use their active antennae and the manual writes that the radio jack provides DC output. The SONY SW7600G and its successor are mostly standalone radios and they perform very well as such. I wonder my indoor passive loop antenna with tuner will work well with this radio since I've just bought one and am waiting for the delivery. 73 from PY5136SWL/PY5WHO

Thanks for the tip. Right now I am enjoying a lot a Shielded Loop Antenna that works very well with all receivers I've got. It is quiet, avoids a great deal of QRN and allows you to listen to very weak and distant signals, e.g. I was able to listen to a Meteorological Station from as far as Bangcock and a broadcast station from Sri Lanka here in the southern tip of Brazil.

Hi. Happy 2016!! I recently got a Sony SW7600GR very cheap, thanks to reviews such as yours. It is like and old friend renovated, for I have an SW7600G. I tested it thoroughly and used an indoor shielded loop antenna and it perfomed wonderfully. The thing I liked most about this radio is the sync detect feature which works better than the old 7600G's and the wheel button for RF gain. I diddn't like the replacement of the tuning red led for that very small lettering on the upper right part of the display. Although, I've got so used with the tuning wheel button of the DEGEN DE1103, I wouldn't mind punching up and down keys if the sound sampling wasn''t so slow. Its sound is not good at all for music and broadcast. It is too processed. Even with the headphones! So I decided to buy a Tecsun PL-660 and pray that it does not come with faulty components. The reviews to this radio are encouraging and if it conforms with them I will naturally replace both 76000GR and DE1103. I also found an ICF-2010 cheap, but with the battery cover missing, so with by the way you stumble onto one, please let me know. The radio is working perfectly well. And what a wonderful radio!! I have a Realistic DX-440 as my main tabletop unit, and the ICF-2010 beat it hands down on SW! I've never had a receiver as sensitive and seclective and so resourceful like this one on SW. The right thing to do would be to sell the DX-440, but it has three things I like better, i.e. its audio, although "wide" it is no more than 4KHz I guess, its powerfull amplifier and bigger speaker more than make up for it, plus I go up 1KHz and the sound improves very much. I also prefer tuning ssb with the DX-440, the audio is so much clearer that some ham stations sound like broadcast instead of the muffled audio. It also alows the use of its wide-narrow switch to avoid inteference. On FM, the DX-440 is not only more sensitive, but also much more selective not to mention a far superior audio quality. So, whenever I want to listen to music or any other broadcast station with strong signal loudly I will go for the DX440. 73 from JayTowne PY5WHO/PY5136SWL.

Just unpacked my new 750. Picked up China Radio on 17490 around midday local, using the internal antenna. FM sounds great. Seems to be a station every 100Khz.
    Next, 20 meter long wire.
Just a side note, UK price is crazy. Amazon varies between £235-400 ($399-600)

***** I was going to use coax from the roof to the radio, no good?
Another thought, all the buildings where I live are steel reinforced concrete. So I'm guessing behave like a Faraday cage at longer radio wave lengths.

It would have been interesting to see a test between the two receiving
Amateur signals on SSB with lots of close by signals, the Sony would beat the Tecsun most likely.

hamrad88, thanks for video, have similar ICF-SW7600G and antenna adjustment for it is very important. Please if you find some time show us how you did your outside antenna, and how can you adjust it. In Germany is very bad receiving because of electronic noises. Thanks.

    • @hamrad88
      @hamrad88  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I have several video on my outside antennas. The key is to use shielded coax cable to bring the signal in from your antenna to your radio. This helps keep electronic noises in your house from getting into the antenna.

@@hamrad88, yes, are you using different length of antenna cable for several bands, like 80m or 40m band ? Or just coaxial cable to a simple 3 m antenna .. ? Thanks for your time, i am looking your video about the receivers, amazing i like it. Are you online as amateur to ? sorry for my grammar.

I have dozens of antennas but my best two for HF is a G5RV and a 31 foot vertical that MFJ sent me. I listen to the ham bands but not active.
