It’s surprising to me too considering that it is probably one of the closest to the pure sound and hype most souls games have. It’s definitely better than some of the stuff DS3 pulls, but it’s not like it’s the typically softer music of Elden Ring too.
I think the unfortunate truth is that a lot of these players just have an under appreciation for the deeper parts of music. I love being bombarded by epic sounds in most of DS3’s tracks, but if I were to continuously listen to the whole thing I’d probably need to get my hearing checked. It is often better to bring it down at points and this adds to the despair that is in these games.
If you look at Darkeater Midir’s theme for example, it’s very well composed, but is just pure epic hype. We don’t get the feeling that this is a beast who has lived for ages through pain and suffering caused by the nature of the Soulsborne genre. That’s why I love Gwyn’s theme and the Soul of Cinder’s theme. We get this slow composition that shows the true despair of the situation. Looking at Hoarah Loux’s theme and more specifically Godfrey’s theme altogether, we get a nice regal tone in the first half that is slower and fit for a king, but then is devolves into the rapid warrior nature of Hoarah Loux while still not just being a bombardment of sound.
My favorite piece of music of all time is hands down New World Symphony. It is exciting, horrifying, sad, and calm all within 12 minutes. We get the blasting of brass as if something horrible has happened and then transition to the melody of flutes and strings not two minutes later. Oh and the French Horns the Horns! The best time I have ever seen this song used was in One Piece when Luffy defeats Crocodile, something I hope they repeat in the Live action instead of putting on of the generic Luffy battle songs. New World Symphony is probably one of the best examples of how you can have an intense exciting song that just isn’t music and noise blasting at you to give you a sense of epicness without any proper distinction.

Only 5 minutes in to this monster, and I can already tell its a banger. Editing is noticeably different, and it is great.
I wanted to add that I find myself listening to Souls OSTs outside of the game and I typically find myself reliving the memory of the encouter, along with all the lore and emotions that go with it. Old Hunters bosses, Gael, pretty much every ER Rememberance boss, Twin Princes, Gwyn etc. I genuinely get watery eyes most of the time I listen to Elden Beast OST. Not simply because it is a great track, but because I find myself so deep in thought as to what EB means in the scope of the lore and game of ER. Its something that cannot be appreciated by people who havent played these games which I think is what seperates them from so many.

I challenge people to let the Regal Ancestor Spirit fight play out. Do not spam weapon arts, don’t speed run it. Just stay alive. The atmosphere of it starts to set in, you’re invading this creatures habitat, the cycle of life happening around you, and the spirit gets more and more angry the more it has to destroy life to stay alive. When you finally do kill the ancestor spirit, all life in the area ceases to exist. The regal ancestor spirit was the heart of the wild, and you killed it. It’s seriously an incredible fight if you don’t try to speed through it.

It's all very subjective of course, other composers have highlights too, Kitamura did amazing with Regal Ancestor, and I confess I find her style a bit boring and aimless sometimes, but Godrick and Mohg are top tier for me, on par with Ludwig from BB, and it takes a lot for me to say that. Hot damn, I knew a video you’ve been cooking for the past year would be good, but man, you really killed it with this.
Funnily enough, this video made me realize why I enjoyed listening to DS3’s soundtrack so much. I always felt like Elden Ring’s soundtrack didn’t have the same intensity that DS3 did.
Turns out I’m just a sick fuck who likes listening to loud music at full blast volume with headphones on.
Even if the production value is considerably lower in DS3, the “beat” of some of those songs hit just right that you feel the intensity and anguish of it all. I think this was the point Koop was trying to communicate when he said Elden Ring’s wasn’t iconic.
I’m not at all educated in music so I can only describe it in vague, nebulas terms, but DS3 has got such raw emotional power that the poorer production doesn’t bother me. Not all the songs are bops, mind you. I was incredibly surprised and disappointed at Nameless King’s theme, especially.
Elden Ring has more distinct tracks, with a lot more flavor and variety, as well as better “production quality” and “mixing.” (Whatever the hell those words mean idk) Which does ultimately make it the better soundtrack.
Though I will say, I think most of elden rings ambient tracks are just unnecessary, I find the music in areas like Liurnia, Limgrave, and Altus to be too repetitive and distracting. Especially when there’s just no escaping it’s presence. I much prefer the silence in Dark Souls to the constant overbearing presence of music in elden ring.
Wasn’t expecting to come out on the side of dark souls as much as I did, considering I have ten times the amount of hours in elden ring than all Dark Souls games combined.
So as it turns out, in your attempt to convince people of elden rings superiority, you made me appreciate Dark Souls more 👍 (still love elden rings soundtrack though)

I think the reason I still love the Ds3 soundtrack so much (even though I do think ER's is still better) is cause I've basically just gotten used to the bad mixing and audio quality (definitely not nostalgia btw) so I can look past those issues and focus on how the songs connect to the fights and the story (definitely not because of nostalgia).
Though doing your quiz was actually kinda mindblowing cause I've barely listened to the ER ost (having not listened to basically anything outside of the game) and I got 9 Ds3 tracks right and 10 ER tracks. (Wildest of which was Lichdragon Fortissax which I've only fought like twice)

It feels like if the song was part of a horror tale (Something similar to the tapestry that, for example, BOTW uses to talk about the Calamity), talking about all the horrible things Godrick did to others, with the grafting, killing entire familys just to get the right body parts and making all fall with his little army, just to try and be a 1% of what Godfrey was and represented for him, turning into a tyrannical figure. Godspeed and Swans are great but I'd disagree that Godspeed's discography is full of "bangers" since they returned in 2012. There's a reason why most diehard GY!BE fans these days primarily listen to live bootlegs from 2000-2003 because that was the band at their peak and they'll never return to that level again. I think when Swans and GY!BE returned in the 2010's post-rock fans were so excited about having them back that they in turn extremely overrated their new material. Not to say that they were terrible albums by any measure, but just that they lacked the creativity and ambition that permeated their earlier material (especially in GY!BE's case).

THIS WAS SUCH A GOOD AND THOUGHTFUL VIDEO! First, I loved how you opened up by sharing what kind of music you're into. Also, I liked how you discussed the music in-depth despite not being like an "academic." It was educational for me nonetheless, as a person who listens and doesn't think about the components that go into a piece, so it was thought-provoking. I've always thought there was something very special about the ER ost and it was the first ever Souls game I played. I enjoyed nearly every song from ER and I still listen to the soundtrack habitually. Then I started to play through the DS trilogy, and I hoped it would have the same effect. There was a lack of ambient music that I found disappointing, but the hubs all had very good music and I would say the Firelink Shrine ost from DS1 is probably my favorite. I understand that some people prefer less ambient music, but I would've made my experience with the Souls trilogy a lot better. Nonetheless, I think there are a lot of good tracks from all the games and I loved how bombastic DS3 was. I have a lot of the songs from that game in a dedicated workout playlist, it really helps get me motivated. Gael's ost is the epitome of how excellent DS3 ost can be, but I do agree with you that it can get monotonous with having fairly similar songs throughout the game. It does make it pretty consistent though, which I like. I don't think it'd be appropriate to describe any of the Souls soundtracks as "bad" because they have a lot of their own merits. However, I agree with you that ER has vastly better mixing and production quality, and now you pointed it out I start to notice how muddled DS3 can get with its songs. If they ever make a remaster, I would love to see how they would improve the mixing. ANYWAY, please excuse my tirade. Thank you for the video, it was very enjoyable!

And the second phase devolving from an honorable duel to a scrap in the mud with biting and kicking in the nuts both musically and visually.

if you really like soundscapes, the first album that organically turned me onto that idea was explosions in the sky - the earth is not a cold dead place
my guitarist friend told me to listen to it because the guitarists for that band know how to shred but they do it very tastefully, i was like "what the hell does that mean, shredding is shredding, how can you be tasteful about shredding"
but i listened and then i understood
they know how to play guitar with all of the talent of any metal guitarist, but they choose to make that shredding into a semi-ambient soundscape, their music is just incredible.
until i got into them, i was a guitarist, and i only had an appreciation for guitar insofar as you know how to play notes on your guitar, I didn't know there was this much depth in just manipulating the timbre of your instrument, it's like this whole new world opened up to me, guitar to set a mood, to convey a scene, to induce an emotion

For me the Bloodborne OST will always be the best, solely because it was actually recorded live on location (that location being a church) as opposed to spliced together in a studio. You can genuinely hear the difference in how natural the voices sound, and I have died on that hill many times fighting DS3/2 fans.
Funnily enough, the ER intro/Radagon theme is by far my least favorite in ER, because it specifically sounds like the worst parts of DS3 (lookin at you, Yhorm), only competently mixed. DS3’s intro at least had some more things going on melodically, and some genuine crescendo and decrescendo across it. ER’s just makes me feel screamed at - I skip to character select to get away from it as fast as possible.
Finally, because I too am pretentious; my faves:
    - Ebrietas, Daughter of the Cosmos (fucking GOATED underrated theme, I have the BB ost on vinyl and this shit gives me chills, probably my favorite boss theme in all of Soulsborne to this point)
    - Oceiros, the Consumed King
    - Malenia, Blade of Miquella
    - Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower
    - The Night Unfurls (also chills)
    - Rom, the Vacuous Spider (I have used this theme for tabletop gaming ambiance for all flavors of psychic villains from Illithid to Sith, even )
    - Twin Princes (I will die on the hill that they’re the best boss in DS3, and I will also die on the hill that they have the second best OST in DS3, and that the only way either could really be improved is by making them longer)
    - Soul of Cinder (I’m on of the exactly 7 freaks who prefer the first half of the song)
    - Father Gascoigne
    - Pontiff Sulyvahn
    - Champion’s Gravetender
    - Twin Demons
    - Darkeater Midir

I love the Elden Ring OST and you made a great video showcasing that. What's even more incredible is that I find that the DLC went so far and beyond in therm of quality. I felt that they even fix most of the issues that were raised in your video by other creators like the uniqueness and lack of distinction between tracks.
My "jaw dropping to the floor" moment was Midra Lord of Frenzied Flame. This track was for me their masterpiece. It starts with those choirs that almost feel distorted and alien, then the cords play this hunting melody reminding us of the merchant and their theme. The energy then swells slowly into madness, overwhelming you to the point of commanding transcendental authority. It matches so well with the visual extravagance of this encounter. He crashes in a fiery explosion going into the second phase, the music doest a perfect switch with some very deep orchestrations and something that sounds like an alarm growing. It gives such a feeling of urgency and panic to that fight.
Divine Beast Dancing Lion also is a contender for their best work in that department.
I would be very curious to know your thoughts on the DLC music.
    Peace

Great video as usual, I welcome this discussion of music. Elden Ring doesn't have 68 tracks--it's over 100 because each ambient track has combat, night, and night combat variations that the official soundtrack neglects to include, as well as the 3 colosseum tracks, the two nomadic merchant tracks, the Leyndell Flute player, and other more obscure ones. Unfortunately the channel that had the ambient variations uploaded got taken down after the DLC story trailer dropped. Radahn phase 2 is one of my favorite parts of this game's soundtrack so I'm surprised you rated that low, although I don't think you really get to hear that part ingame unfortunately. Also in that segment I think you called Fire Giant a "shardbearer" boss--to be the huge pedant I am, those are specifically the ones which give you a great rune on defeat (Rennala + the six demigods), whereas "Remembrance Boss" is the category that includes bosses like Fire Giant and Maliketh too.

The album Souvlaki got a huge cult following by virtue of its strong atmosphere. Since you're into Black Metal, you know how texturing and ambient elevates the harmonic work.
Is not fully Shoegaze, and it's in spanish, but Soda Estereo was the equivalent of The Beatles in Latin America when it comes to rock. Their album Dynamo has some strong Shoegaze vibes, with their song En Remolinos being a pure Masterpiece.

The thing I love most is black metal that sounds sorrowful and full of despair like Afsky or nihilistic but not in an edgy teenage I hate the world and wanna watch it burn way but more in an absurdist acknowledgement of meaninglessness of everything while still clinging to hope no matter how futile it seems. Music from people who read too much Camus lol. Think MGLA exercises in futility which is probably my favorite black metal album despite the band members being a bit sus.

I’m always surprised when I see people downplay Radahns theme, yes it’s slow, but it perfectly reflects him. It has the loudness and grandness of a fight of his scale, the strange organ/strings that represent the gravity soundscape present in astel and fallingstar beasts. The song also has a lot of strangeness in it, because he’s insane from the rot. And finally, the ending is the best piece of music work fromsoft has done in my opinion, it’s a funeral, you can hear people mourning him, as his corpse is carried down the streets, and it nearly brings me to tears every time.

I like them about equal myself, I really appreciate the more variety in Elden Ring but until the dlc came out (because damn there’s come crazy bangers in there Midra especially is perfect) I don’t think ER had quite the heights of Ds3 and I think that’s because my favorite ds3 tracks focus more on melody. I love tracks like Twin princes, Champion Gundyr and Abyss watchers. I really do think it’s very close tho. Also nothing on either come close to Ludwig on either imo.
